Comparison has a way of quietly stealing our joy, clouding our purpose, and making us question whether we're enough.
But what if God never intended for us to measure our lives against someone else's?
In this episode of the Nourished to Bloom Podcast, Kara shares a simple phrase she recently heard that has been echoing in her heart: Compete, not compare. While the message was meant for young baseball players, it's a powerful reminder for every woman trying to navigate motherhood, body image, purpose, and faith.
Together we'll explore what Scripture teaches about faithfully running the race God has set before each of us through Philippians 3:14, 1 Timothy 4:7, and Acts 20:24. You'll discover three practical ways to break free from the comparison trap by rooting your identity in Christ, embracing lifelong growth, and renewing your mind with God's truth.
If you've been feeling behind, wondering what's next, or constantly measuring yourself against everyone else, this conversation will encourage you to lift your eyes from comparison and fix them on.
Because the Kingdom of God doesn't need another version of someone else.
It needs the woman God uniquely created you to be.
In this episode, you'll learn:
🌟Why comparison keeps us from living out God's unique purpose for our lives. 🪞How understanding your identity in Christ changes the way you see yourself. 🎁Why becoming a lifelong learner can uncover the gifts God has placed within you. 🧐How renewing your mind helps you replace fear with freedom. 🏃🏻♀️Practical ways to faithfully run your own race with confidence and peace.
Ready to stop comparing and start living with greater clarity and confidence? I'm opening a limited number of one-on-one coaching spots in mid-August, and I'd love to help you discover the unique race God has created you to run. If you're interested in learning more, email me at kara@karatrochta.com to schedule a vision call. I'd be honored to walk alongside you.
If this episode encouraged you, share it with a friend who could use the reminder that she doesn't have to compare—she simply has to faithfully run the race God has given her.
Beauty held is the seed. Beauty shared is the flower.

What if one simple phrase could change the way you parent your kids,
00:00:05
the way you see your body or your career, even
00:00:08
your relationship with God? Today we're talking about 2 words that
00:00:12
have been stuck in my mind ever since I heard them: compete,

00:00:24
us to run. Today I'm going to share 3 practical
00:00:28
ways that we can stop chasing everyone else's life and start
00:00:32

00:02:05
Welcome to Nourish to Bloom, where every day is a sacred
00:02:08
invitation to thrive. Hey there, welcome back to the Nourish
00:02:12
to Bloom podcast. So happy to be here with you this
00:02:16
week. It's been a couple of weeks, and I
00:02:20
have to say that the 2 weeks that I didn't release an
00:02:23
episode were a very welcomed
00:02:27
rest. I had to wrestle with myself
00:02:31
over the decision not to record for 2 weeks and remind
00:02:34
myself that it was going to be okay. And I think that
00:02:38
that whole process really just feeds into
00:02:43
what was put on my heart and my mind to share with you today,
00:02:47
because the whole reason why I struggled with not
00:02:51
recording for 2 weeks was because in my head I was like, well,
00:02:55
They all say that if you don't put an episode out every week, that you're
00:02:59
gonna lose followers, you're going to lose traction, and just kind of the on and
00:03:02
on and on downward spiral. But then I had to
00:03:06
remind myself that, what are the things that I stand for? What are the
00:03:10
things that I encourage other women to do, but sometimes
00:03:13
don't do myself? And that's, you know, that
00:03:17
rest, that one week I was on vacation, and the
00:03:21
next week I was doing some catechist training, and it was
00:03:24
going to be okay. Yeah. if I did not
00:03:28
release episodes that week. And
00:03:32
I mean, I'm really hoping it's okay that I didn't release episodes this week.
00:03:36
I guess we will see who comes back and keeps listening. But
00:03:40
y'all, this is just kind of where it's all at, right? And I wanted to
00:03:44
start today's episode with a verse that was put on
00:03:47
my heart and my mind. You'll understand why here in a
00:03:51
minute. But, um, it's from St. Paul's letter to the Philippians,
00:03:55
chapter 3, verse 14, where St. Paul writes, I press on
00:03:59
toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me
00:04:03
heavenward in Christ Jesus. I love that,
00:04:07
right? Especially the part where it says that God has called me heavenward, that
00:04:10
he was so focused on, on that long-term goal, what
00:04:14
he was living his life towards. And I also love this image
00:04:18
because Paul doesn't say, I look around and see how
00:04:22
everyone else is doing. He says, I press on.
00:04:27
His eyes were forward-focused on the race
00:04:30
that God had given him to run. And we can take that to heart too,
00:04:35
that we can focus on the race that God has given each one of us
00:04:38
to run, the one that is calling us heavenward towards
00:04:42
Christ Jesus. And the reason why this verse came
00:04:45
to mind is I recently watched a part of an interview with
00:04:49
Texas A&M head baseball coach Michael Early. And in this
00:04:53
interview, he was sharing that he tells his young freshman players and
00:04:57
even his own son to compete, not compare.
00:05:02
Compete, not compare. And in
00:05:06
baseball, he's, you know, encouraging his players to go out there and play their
00:05:10
game and not spend their whole time measuring
00:05:13
themselves against another player's size, talent, stats, or
00:05:17
performance. And honestly, I don't
00:05:20
think that's just good baseball advice. I think it's a beautiful
00:05:24
reminder for all of us sitting here today. For me, as a
00:05:27
mom with kids who are playing sports and having an
00:05:31
almost teenage daughter, this is exactly what I want my
00:05:35
children to believe, that they have
00:05:39
their own race to run and that they are going
00:05:42
to run it at their own pace. Using their own gifts,
00:05:47
through the strength that the Lord has given them,
00:05:51
and even through the limitations and the obstacles that come
00:05:55
about. And that moment where
00:05:59
they begin comparing themselves to someone else is just
00:06:02
them undermining who God created them to be.
00:06:06
And I want them to know that God doesn't need another version of them, of
00:06:11
someone else. Like, he specifically created
00:06:14
them for a purpose, and he wants them to faithfully run this race
00:06:18
that he designed specifically for them.
00:06:23
And if I'm being honest and looking at
00:06:26
just my own life and, and other women around me, y'all,
00:06:30
comparison doesn't end in childhood. Let's be
00:06:33
honest, we just get older and compare different things.
00:06:37
We compare our bodies, our homes, our parenting,
00:06:41
our careers, vocations, bank accounts, spiritual
00:06:45
lives. Like, the list just goes on and on of this comparison,
00:06:49
of looking around and seeing how is everybody else doing it.
00:06:53
And I think this especially comes to a tee in these
00:06:57
middle motherhood years when so many of it— so many of us are asking questions
00:07:01
of, you know, who am I now and what's next for me?
00:07:06
But what I really think is that comparison becomes one of the biggest
00:07:10
obstacles to hearing God's voice, because instead of listening
00:07:13
to the author of our story, we're busy trying to read everyone
00:07:17
else's manuscript. But here's what I know.
00:07:24
God has a blank page that he wants
00:07:28
to write with your life. And this
00:07:31
blank page tells a story, your story,
00:07:35
that has an important role in the history of his kingdom.
00:07:40
And that story can only be written when we stop trying to
00:07:44
live someone else's life. So
00:07:48
when I think about my own journey
00:07:52
and the women that I've had the privilege of coaching through this exact
00:07:56
struggle, I think that there are 3 things that can
00:08:00
really help you compete instead of compare.
00:08:05
3 kind of foundational ideas that will help you stop
00:08:09
comparing and compete and run the race
00:08:13
that you were designed to run. And the
00:08:17
first one is identity and purpose.
00:08:22
This is where it all begins. If you are
00:08:26
operating from an identity that is built on world standards of
00:08:29
beauty, success, productivity, or achievement,
00:08:33
you are building your house on sand, as scripture would say.
00:08:37
Those standards are constantly shifting, leaving you
00:08:41
wondering if you're enough. It leaves you off balance and
00:08:45
unstable. So now's the time to
00:08:48
take some inventory. Where are your beliefs
00:08:52
rooted? Where are you finding your worth?
00:08:57
For me personally, doing this identity work cleared out
00:09:00
so much of the noise, especially like
00:09:04
the nutrition noise and the body image noise that just
00:09:09
lived rent-free in my head for so long,
00:09:13
that I could finally hear the Lord's voice instead of
00:09:16
everyone else's. When I was able to
00:09:20
really sit with this identity work and let go
00:09:24
of those world standards and instead really
00:09:27
embrace and embody being created in his image.
00:09:32
When we know who we are in Christ, we stop feeling that need
00:09:36
to prove ourselves. We stop needing to compare how
00:09:40
we are running our race to how everyone else is. Because we
00:09:43
already know whose we are. We already know that we're not doing
00:09:47
this alone. The second kind of
00:09:51
key point is become a lifelong learner.
00:09:55
And I love this. I was recently at my Level 3
00:09:58
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd formation, and one of our formation leaders
00:10:02
said something that was really inspiring to me. She
00:10:06
shared that for her, this work in the Good Shepherd
00:10:10
was something she could never tire of learning.
00:10:14
And I loved that, that just that perspective of she had found something
00:10:18
that she could never get exhausted of learning more about.
00:10:22
And it really reminded me that our faith is the same. It's never something
00:10:26
that we master. It's something that we continue learning and
00:10:30
living and allowing God to deepen throughout our lives.
00:10:35
And we can see this thread of, of this
00:10:39
lifelong learner. Um, and it made me think of
00:10:42
1 Timothy chapter 4, verse 7, where Paul encourages
00:10:46
Timothy to train yourself in godliness.
00:10:50
And training isn't something that you do once.
00:10:54
It's something that you return to over and over again.
00:10:58
And the same is so true in our spiritual lives. And
00:11:01
it's also true of the gifts that God has placed inside each one of us.
00:11:06
Right? And so it made me start thinking about the things that I never tire
00:11:10
of learning about. Intuitive eating,
00:11:13
women's health, mindset and psychology,
00:11:17
coaching, human formation, helping
00:11:21
women become who God created them to be. And so I
00:11:24
want you to take this stance too. And it makes
00:11:28
me wonder, what are those things for you? What are the
00:11:32
things that you never tire of learning about? Because those
00:11:36
interests aren't random. They're often clues to how God
00:11:39
uniquely wired you to serve him. And so if you're one
00:11:43
of those people who has been wondering, you know, what's next for you,
00:11:47
this is really a beautiful place for you to begin exploring,
00:11:51
really embracing this, this attitude of being
00:11:55
a lifelong learner. What are the things that God constantly
00:11:59
calls you back to? Because it's probably where he's
00:12:03
wanting you to serve. And the 3rd
00:12:07
key thing is to renew your mind.
00:12:11
Y'all, y'all know that I know and believe that this one is huge, that
00:12:14
mindset piece, because that
00:12:18
comparison game is almost always rooted in fear.
00:12:22
Fear that you're behind, fear that you're not enough, fear that
00:12:26
someone else is doing it better. Fear that you've somehow missed what God
00:12:29
has for you. Those aren't thoughts that come
00:12:33
from the Lord. Those are the messages that you have,
00:12:37
you have absorbed from the world. And when you begin
00:12:41
replacing those lies with God's truth, something incredible
00:12:44
happens. Transformation. You
00:12:48
stop seeing other women as competition, and
00:12:52
instead you begin celebrating them. You stop wishing
00:12:55
for someone else's life and instead become grateful for the
00:12:59
life that God has entrusted you to live.
00:13:03
Y'all, and that's that kingdom work. That's that body of Christ's work.
00:13:08
And that's what God's grace is allowing you to do. To love
00:13:12
him. To love your neighbor. And yes, to
00:13:16
love yourself as a daughter created in his image.
00:13:19
And y'all, this is how we compete instead of compare.
00:13:25
And so as I wrap up today, I'm going to leave you with one final
00:13:27
scripture verse. It's Acts chapter 20, verse 24, where Saint
00:13:31
Paul says, I consider my life worth nothing to me. My
00:13:35
only aim is to finish the race and complete the
00:13:38
task the Lord Jesus has given me.
00:13:42
And notice what he doesn't say. He doesn't say my goal is to beat
00:13:46
everyone else. He doesn't say, my goal is to have Peter's
00:13:50
ministry or John's gift. He says, my only
00:13:54
aim is to finish the race the Lord has given me.
00:13:59
Y'all, comparison is exhausting because you're
00:14:03
trying to run a race that God never assigned you to.
00:14:07
You're running in the wrong lane. But when your
00:14:11
identity is rooted in Christ, and when you continue training your
00:14:14
heart in godliness, when you renew your mind in his truth instead
00:14:17
of the world's standards and you
00:14:20
stop looking sideways and you start looking upward,
00:14:24
that's when you're going to move forward. So this
00:14:28
week I want to leave you with one simple question: where have you
00:14:32
been comparing instead of competing?
00:14:36
Maybe it's your body. Maybe it's motherhood.
00:14:40
Maybe it's your career. Maybe it's your faith.
00:14:44
Whatever it is, bring it before the Lord. Lay it at his
00:14:48
feet and allow him to transform it. Allow him to show you the
00:14:52
race that you are meant to run. Ask him to help you
00:14:55
faithfully run this race because y'all, the
00:14:59
kingdom of God doesn't need another version of me. It doesn't need
00:15:03
another version of someone else. It needs the
00:15:07
woman he uniquely created you to be.
00:15:12
And so if today's episode has spoken to you and you're like,
00:15:16
yeah, I really want to compete, not compete. Compare,
00:15:20
and you want to leave that comparison behind and live with greater
00:15:23
clarity and confidence in who God created you to be, I'd
00:15:27
love to walk alongside you and mentor you through this journey.
00:15:32
I'm opening some new one-on-one coaching spots starting in
00:15:35
mid-August, and this identity and mindset work is
00:15:38
exactly where you need to begin. So if
00:15:42
you are ready to say yes to the race the Lord is
00:15:45
calling you to, send me an email,
00:15:48
kara@karatrokta.com, and we'll take it from there to
00:15:52
schedule a vision call and really talk about
00:15:56
what is this race? What does it look like? What is the Lord calling you
00:15:59
to? And create this individual approach to you
00:16:03
being able to have the tools and the support and the encouragement that
00:16:07
you need to run your race well.
00:16:11
Until next time, remember, beauty held is a seed, beauty shared is a
00:16:15
flower. It is your time to bloom.
00:16:19
And remember, most importantly, go compete, don't compare.
00:16:24
I hope you have a beautiful and blessed week. And again, so
00:16:27
excited to be back here with you this week, and I will
00:16:31
talk to you soon. Take care. Bye. Bye.
