Ever catch yourself frozen—stuck between wanting change and feeling paralyzed by all the "what ifs"?
Like, we want a more peaceful relationship with food… We want to show up more confidently… We want to pursue the things God has placed on our hearts…
…but that quiet voice of fear keeps us playing small.
This week on Nourished to Bloom, we're diving into something we all experience: fear-based decision making—and how it might be shaping more of our lives than we realize.
Because fear doesn't just show up in big moments… it sneaks into the everyday: our food choices, our relationships, our calling, and the way we show up (or don't).
And often? It disguises itself as "being wise" or "playing it safe."
But underneath… it's keeping us stuck.
✨ What we unpack in this episode:
🌱 How fear-based decisions sneak in (and why they can feel like the "right" or responsible choice at first)
🧠 Why fear gives the illusion of control but actually leads to more overwhelm, second-guessing, and disconnection
🙈 The subtle ways fear keeps us from showing up —in friendships, in community, and in the passions we feel called to pursue
✝️ What we can learn from the Apostles as they navigated fear after the resurrection of Jesus Christ—and chose trust anyway
🌿 A simple but powerful shift: instead of asking "How do I get rid of fear?" we begin asking, "What would trust look like right now?"
🔥 A practical invitation for us this week:
The next time we feel stuck in a decision—big or small—pause and ask:
- What am I afraid of right now?
- Is this fear leading me toward peace or away from it?
- What would trust look like here?
- What is one small step I can take in trust today?
Maybe it's: sending the text… eating the food you've been avoiding… signing up for the thing… or simply letting yourself be seen a little more.
🌸 You were made for more
The desires on your heart? The nudges you keep feeling? They're not random.
They're invitations.
Fear might always try to have a seat—but it doesn't get to drive.
Just like the Apostles, we don't have to wait until we feel fearless… we can choose to move forward in trust.
Together.

00:02:26
Hey there. Welcome back to the Nourish to Bloom podcast. I
00:02:30
am so happy to be spending some time here with you this week
00:02:34
and I'm really excited for this topic,
00:02:37
fear based decision making. So this has been coming up quite
00:02:41
a bit in coaching sessions with clients lately, things
00:02:45
like, well, Kara, I know what I need to do, but
00:02:49
I'm not doing it right. And when
00:02:52
we go deeper and we dig deeper, it's not really that they don't
00:02:56
necessarily want to do the things that they know they need to do
00:02:59
or they want to do. It's. They
00:03:03
are afraid to get started, right? There's this fear that's keeping them
00:03:07
frozen. And that, y', all, is what fear does. It keeps us from
00:03:11
frozen and stuck. And so I want to
00:03:15
talk today about how we can work on
00:03:18
not letting fear run the show in our lives
00:03:22
and how we can do this in a practical way. And then I really want
00:03:26
to incorporate looking at the lives of the apostles, especially because
00:03:30
it's right after Easter and the daily readings are really focused
00:03:33
on the Acts of the Apostles. And I think it was just a beautiful
00:03:37
connection, because what kept coming up for me when
00:03:41
I read the Acts of the Apostles is how they kept meeting
00:03:45
in secret and how they were in
00:03:48
hiding for fear of the Jews, right? And
00:03:52
there was just something that just clicked for me this time, like how
00:03:56
afraid they must have been in that
00:04:00
moment that they were going to do something very, very new
00:04:03
and radical. And I mean, how it just started
00:04:07
with the apostles, these 12
00:04:11
men, plus, you know, the other disciples and followers of Jesus, and how,
00:04:16
because they did not let fear run the show, the church is what it
00:04:20
is today. And I think we can really take these lessons from the
00:04:23
apostles in how we cannot let
00:04:27
fear keep us from doing what the Lord wants us to
00:04:30
do. So first, I want to dive into what does fear
00:04:34
based decision making look like? So let's just start
00:04:38
by naming it. Fear based decision making is when our choices are
00:04:41
driven by questions and thoughts like, what if something
00:04:45
goes wrong? What if I lose control
00:04:49
or fail? What if this doesn't work or go
00:04:53
the way that I want it to or think that it should? What
00:04:56
will other people think if I do this? And here's
00:05:00
kind of the tricky part. It often kind of
00:05:03
disguises itself as wisdom. Like, okay,
00:05:07
I am being proactive, and I'm thinking about all the things and creating
00:05:11
these contingency plans. And this shows up as, okay, I'm being wise,
00:05:15
I'm being, you know, prudent and smart, but
00:05:20
it isn't actually wisdom,
00:05:24
right? Because underneath it, there's really
00:05:27
anxiety, there's a desire for control,
00:05:32
and there's this lack of trust. And fear is just kind of this
00:05:35
blanket that's sitting on top of it, right? And so when we
00:05:39
talk about that wisdom it can sound like, well, I'm just being careful or I'm
00:05:43
just trying to be healthy or I just want to do this the right way.
00:05:47
This shows up all the time in coaching and the women that I work with.
00:05:51
I've felt it so many times too. And maybe you have. Also,
00:05:55
it looks like things like staying in diet rules because you're afraid that
00:05:59
you're going to gain weight or your body is going to look different,
00:06:03
or you're avoiding certain foods because you don't feel like you can trust yourself around
00:06:07
them. Overthinking every decision about food,
00:06:10
movement or your body, or feeling paralyzed when
00:06:14
there's no perfect choice. Maybe it's
00:06:18
not taking a step on that dreamer, that desire,
00:06:22
that passion that you know that the Lord is calling you to. Maybe it's that
00:06:26
you're not sending that email or not working on your
00:06:29
resume or not doing even the things that
00:06:33
you're supposed to do in taking care of your house because
00:06:37
I don't know, there's some sort of fear under there. There's some anxiety or
00:06:41
overwhelm under that. The reality is, is
00:06:44
that when we let fear run the show, it's
00:06:48
exhausting and it just keeps us stuck.
00:06:53
Because ultimately, fear being from the
00:06:57
enemy. The play is to keep us small. And fear doesn't
00:07:00
just influence our decisions, it ultimately shrinks our lives
00:07:05
because it keeps us playing small and it keeps us in staying what
00:07:09
feels safe and comfortable.
00:07:13
It has us avoiding growth or
00:07:17
making changes even when we really want and desire
00:07:20
a change. And here's the hard truth,
00:07:24
and man, it's a really hard truth. Fear will always feel more
00:07:28
comfortable than trust, at least at first.
00:07:33
Because fear gives the illusion of control.
00:07:37
Fear gives that illusion that you know what you are
00:07:40
doing. But it actually, in the long run,
00:07:44
leads to more confusion, more second guessing and
00:07:48
more disconnection and ultimately less peace in your life.
00:07:53
And I really want to take this one step deeper because fear doesn't just
00:07:56
keep us stuck in our habits. It may start
00:08:00
with this fear around food and what our
00:08:04
bodies look like, but it starts to spill over into
00:08:07
other parts of our lives. And it keeps us from showing up
00:08:11
the way we want to. It keeps us from things
00:08:15
like reaching out to a mom that we'd love to get coffee with
00:08:19
and get to know better. It keeps us from reaching out
00:08:23
and saying yes to a new friendship or putting ourselves
00:08:27
out there and being involved in community or starting the thing
00:08:31
that's been on our hearts for months or even years. Maybe it's that
00:08:34
business idea or a ministry, or a creative passion you have,
00:08:38
or even the desire to just become more present
00:08:43
and a more joyful version of yourself in the life that you are currently
00:08:47
living. And when this happens, these
00:08:50
are what those thoughts sound like. What if I'm awkward?
00:08:55
What if they don't like me? What if I fail?
00:09:00
What if I'm not good enough? So instead,
00:09:04
we let fear keep us on the sidelines of our life. We
00:09:08
stay quiet. We stay comfortable, but
00:09:11
dissatisfied. And we stay hidden.
00:09:15
And on the surface, we make it look like everything
00:09:19
is fine. But deep down, there's
00:09:22
this
00:09:25
dissatisfaction. There's this quiet
00:09:29
longing for more, almost like this storm that is under the
00:09:32
surface. And this is where that fear
00:09:36
becomes really sneaky, because it doesn't just keep us
00:09:40
from discomfort. It keeps us from our calling,
00:09:44
from our true purpose and passion. It keeps us from living the
00:09:48
life that the Lord wills for us.
00:09:53
And so this is where I want to zoom out for a second and really
00:09:56
focus on the apostles. After the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
00:10:01
They had literally walked with him. They
00:10:05
had seen Jesus perform miracles. They
00:10:08
saw the empty tomb, and they finally understood and knew the
00:10:12
truth. And yet they were still afraid.
00:10:17
They were hiding from fear of the Jews.
00:10:21
They were uncertain and what they should do next.
00:10:25
They were questioning what was coming next.
00:10:29
And honestly, this should bring us a sense of comfort,
00:10:33
because it can remind us that fear isn't a sign that you're doing something wrong,
00:10:38
but it can be a sign that you're invited into something bigger.
00:10:42
This growth. What changed for them wasn't
00:10:46
that fear disappeared. It's that
00:10:49
they were open and created space and they received the Holy
00:10:53
Spirit and they began to act in spite of
00:10:57
the fear. They
00:11:00
stood up and they preached. They traveled and spread
00:11:04
the word. They risked everything, including their lives.
00:11:09
Not because they suddenly felt fearless, but because they
00:11:13
trusted God more than they trusted their fear.
00:11:18
And I think this is why the lives of the apostles are so powerful to
00:11:21
reflect on, because they could have stayed hidden.
00:11:26
They could have continued to act out of fear, out of
00:11:30
uncertainty, out of not knowing what would happen next.
00:11:33
But imagine if they had stayed there. Imagine if fear had
00:11:37
kept them from stepping out, from speaking, from sharing the truth they had
00:11:41
encountered. Y', all. The church wouldn't look the way it does
00:11:44
today. Think about how quickly and how
00:11:48
fast the spread of Christianity happened and how far
00:11:51
reaching it was and what it started from.
00:11:55
Lives wouldn't have been transformed in the same way.
00:12:01
Just as we know that Mary's yes mattered when she said yes to
00:12:05
God, to being the mother of his son,
00:12:09
their yes, the apostles, yes, mattered
00:12:15
and dear sisters in Christ. So does your yes.
00:12:20
So this, yes, this may mean showing up and
00:12:24
healing your relationship with food and your body,
00:12:28
but it also means showing up in
00:12:32
conversations and opportunities,
00:12:36
in being the version of yourself that you have kept
00:12:40
putting off. Fear says,
00:12:43
stay where it's safe. But God is inviting you to something that
00:12:47
requires vulnerability, that requires courage,
00:12:50
trust, fortitude. Not because he wants to
00:12:54
make things hard on us, but because that's where growth and
00:12:58
freedom live. Trust is what
00:13:01
helps us grow and to live free. And
00:13:05
that's what's being asked of you. To trust, to trust your body,
00:13:09
to trust the process, to trust that God designed you
00:13:13
with wisdom and a purpose and a passion. And I
00:13:17
know that that can feel really scary. But here's the shift.
00:13:21
The goal is not to eliminate fear. The goal is to
00:13:25
stop letting fear make your decisions.
00:13:29
So instead, we ask, what would this decision look like if it were rooted in
00:13:33
trust instead of fear? And when we start to
00:13:37
ask this question, it can change everything.
00:13:40
And so I want to give you something tangible to walk away with this kind
00:13:44
of practical shift from fear to faith. So the
00:13:48
next time that you're faced with making a decision, whether it's about
00:13:51
food, your body, your schedule, your purpose, your
00:13:55
identity, anything, I want you to pause and ask,
00:13:59
what am I afraid of right now?
00:14:03
Where is fear keeping me from showing up right now? I want
00:14:07
you to name it, and I want you to be honest.
00:14:11
Fill in the blank. I am afraid of blank.
00:14:16
And that shows us what's kind of hiding under that blanket of fear.
00:14:20
Second question. Is this fear leading me toward peace or
00:14:24
away from it? Fear often
00:14:28
creates this. This urgency and this pressure and this
00:14:31
rigidity. Whereas peace allows you to feel
00:14:35
more creative, more curious,
00:14:39
excited. Number three. What
00:14:43
would trust look like here?
00:14:47
Not trying to be perfect, not trying to do something with
00:14:50
complete certainty, but just trust. What would trust
00:14:54
look like in this moment? And what is one small step I
00:14:58
can take in trust today?
00:15:02
Maybe it's sending the text to a new mom that you want to
00:15:06
get to know. Maybe it's signing up for the thing,
00:15:10
sharing your idea, letting yourself be seen a
00:15:14
little more than you did yesterday.
00:15:18
Maybe it's looking like eating the food you've been avoiding
00:15:22
or stopping when you feel full without being guilty.
00:15:27
Letting go of control just a little bit.
00:15:31
Taking the next small step instead of having the whole plan figured out.
00:15:38
Y', all. Your life is not meant to be lived hidden by fear.
00:15:43
The gifts, the desires, the nudges on your heart Those are not
00:15:47
random. Those are all invitations. And fear will try
00:15:51
to convince you to stay small. But God is
00:15:54
always calling you forward to step out and trust.
00:15:58
And so if you take nothing else from today's episode, just
00:16:02
let it be. That fear might show up in your life,
00:16:06
but it doesn't get the final say. You can feel
00:16:10
afraid and still choose trust. You can feel
00:16:13
uncertain and still move forward just like the apostles did.
00:16:17
And you don't have to do it alone. God is with you in every
00:16:21
step of this. And if you're
00:16:25
ready to go deeper into this work, whether it's healing your relationship with
00:16:29
food, your body, or growing in your identity, discovering
00:16:32
your purpose and passion, I'd love to support you. You can always
00:16:36
reach out to me@karaharatrochta.com and let
00:16:40
me know that you're ready to go deeper. I pray that you
00:16:44
have a beautiful and blessed week. Remember, beauty held is the seed,
00:16:47
beauty shared is the flower. It is your time to bloom. God
00:16:51
bless. Take care and I'll see you next week. Bye.
