Have you ever walked into a room and, almost without realizing it, started sizing yourself up against every other woman there?

Her arms. Her waist. Her confidence.

And suddenly your peace feels smaller.

Comparison can feel automatic — like background noise we've learned to live with. But this week on Nourished to Bloom, we're naming it for what it is:

A rope.

A quiet tether that shapes how we see ourselves… how we eat… and even how we show up in the world.

In Episode 107, we dive into the "body check game" so many of us play without even noticing — and we explore how true freedom begins when our identity is rooted in Christ, not in the mirror.

Here's what we unpack together:

✨ The Sneaky Body Check Game – How comparison becomes a habit that quietly dictates our mood, our confidence, and even our food choices.

🪢 The Rope of Comparison – Why this isn't just a "bad day" struggle, but a deeper identity issue that tethers our peace.

💡 Image Bearers, Not Performers – We are made in the image of God — not size-dependent, not conditional, not earned. That truth changes everything.

🛑 Holy Boundaries – Practical steps to fast from comparison: unfollow accounts that stir envy, step back from mirror obsession, and set limits around diet talk.

🕊️ Ornament vs. Instrument – Our bodies were not designed to be evaluated — they were designed to love, serve, and carry out God's mission.

Comparison whispers, "You'd be more worthy if…"

But the Gospel says, "You are already beloved."

This week's invitation is simple but brave:

🌱 Fast from comparison in one tangible way. 🌱 Notice when it rises — and reorient your thoughts to truth. 🌱 Remind yourself: "I am made in the image of God."

By Easter, we're not striving for perfect body confidence.

We're loosening the rope.

We're anchoring our identity somewhere unshakable.

And when identity is secure, food and body anxiety lose their grip.

Let's rise together.

You were made to bloom. 🌸

00:00:00
The game that every woman plays but never knows she's playing

00:00:04
is what we call the body check game.

00:00:08
You know that moment when you walk into a room and you instantly start

00:00:12
comparing yourself to every other woman there?

00:00:16
You definitely don't do it out loud, but you just do this quiet

00:00:19
scan. What do her arms look like? Are they

00:00:23
toned? Look how thin her waist is. Look how confident

00:00:27
she is. And then you start to

00:00:30
compare all of this to how you see yourself in the moment

00:00:34
and in the mirror later. Comparison can be so

00:00:38
subtle, we barely notice that we're doing it. It just becomes this,

00:00:42
like, habit that we have. But it quietly

00:00:45
shapes so many things: how we see ourselves,

00:00:49
how we show up, and even how we eat. So

00:00:53
today we're talking about that rope of comparison that is

00:00:56
tethering so many of us and how rooting our

00:01:00
identity in Christ is the solution that will

00:01:03
change everything when it comes to body image.

00:02:44
Hey there, friends! Welcome back to the Nourish to Bloom podcast.

00:02:48
Happy to be back here with you again this week, and we are talking

00:02:51
about probably one of my favorite topics—

00:02:55
body image. And it is the work that I probably

00:02:59
really love doing the most with women because it is so

00:03:03
transformational when you just see that shift in a

00:03:07
woman who spent so much of her time

00:03:10
comparing herself, trying to live up to unrealistic societal

00:03:14
standards, and that shift that comes when she is able

00:03:18
to let it all go and she truly just lives in her

00:03:21
identity as a beloved daughter of Christ. How

00:03:25
everything just shifts for that woman. It is

00:03:29
truly, truly transformational and just probably one of

00:03:32
my favorite things to ever be able to to witness.

00:03:37
So we're going to continue on our Lenten journey

00:03:41
this week, and over the last few weeks we've been talking about loosening those

00:03:44
ropes and those tethers. We've talked about it in terms of food

00:03:48
and control, in terms of distraction and

00:03:52
emotional eating. But today we're really

00:03:56
going to talk about, I think, what is the

00:03:59
strongest rope of all for most of us women, and that's

00:04:03
comparison. And comparison not

00:04:06
really in the relation, uh, relation of houses or

00:04:10
careers or lifestyle, because that's definitely one of

00:04:14
those areas, but we're really going to talk about body comparison.

00:04:18
And I think what is really important to know is

00:04:21
that when we talk about body image and then really

00:04:25
comparison in general, it's really a deeper self-image

00:04:30
issue or struggle. It's really— the issue is how

00:04:33
we are seeing ourselves, the narrative that we have about ourselves

00:04:37
in, in our minds. But this all starts to

00:04:41
really manifest itself really in that body

00:04:44
comparison. The glance in the mirror, the scrolling through

00:04:48
social media, the mental note of how your clothes are fitting,

00:04:53
the awareness of how someone else looks in a dress that you'd never

00:04:56
wear. Oftentimes it's subtle. It's

00:05:00
just, again, that narrative that's always there, but

00:05:04
it's constant. And it can feel so normal

00:05:07
that this is just the way we talk to ourselves. But let's go back to

00:05:11
that question we've been asking all Lent. Does this help

00:05:15
my heart rise or does it tether me?

00:05:21
Comparison rarely feels dramatic. Now, of

00:05:24
course, we kind of all have those like comparison meltdowns,

00:05:28
of when we are just overwhelmed with not feeling

00:05:32
good enough. But the reality is, is that for many of us,

00:05:35
comparison just feels automatic. You walk into a room

00:05:39
and you immediately compare how you're measuring up to

00:05:43
every other person. You see a photo of yourself and you are

00:05:46
evaluating or picking it apart. You try on

00:05:50
clothes and, man, that can just lead to

00:05:54
a really deep downward spiral,

00:05:59
spiral. And slowly and quietly and over time, your

00:06:03
peace becomes tied up to how you're measuring up.

00:06:08
That is— that's a rope, y'all. Now

00:06:12
I want to make something clear, like wanting to care for your body is

00:06:16
not sinful, it's stewardship. And desiring to

00:06:20
be of good health is not vain. But the issue comes

00:06:24
when your identity starts attaching itself to appearance

00:06:29
or material desires or societal standards or

00:06:33
whatever, right? But again, for the sake of sticking with body image,

00:06:38
when your worth rises and falls with a number on a scale,

00:06:41
how your reflection looks in the mirror, or someone

00:06:46
else's body, that's when that rope tightens.

00:06:50
And here's what makes this rope so powerful.

00:06:53
Comparison doesn't just affect how you see yourself.

00:06:57
It affects literally everything in your life.

00:07:02
The things you think, the way you feel about yourself,

00:07:05
the things that you do or don't do.

00:07:09
It also shapes how you eat. I mean, think about it.

00:07:13
You start to restrict food because you don't measure up, or you over-exercise

00:07:17
because you're trying to compensate. You avoid certain foods because

00:07:21
you're afraid of what they'll do to your body. You try to eat

00:07:24
perfectly to feel safe.

00:07:28
Food becomes that tool,

00:07:32
but comparison is really that tether.

00:07:37
And it's important that we return to really

00:07:41
what is so foundational, and it's really answering the question

00:07:45
of Who defines you?

00:07:49
Not culture, not the scale, not a pair

00:07:53
of jeans, not an algorithm.

00:07:57
Genesis says you were created in the image of God, not in the

00:08:01
image of Instagram, not in the image of your younger

00:08:04
self, not in the image of someone else's highlight reel.

00:08:10
We are image bearers of Christ.

00:08:14
And that is not conditional. It is not size-dependent.

00:08:18
It is not something that is earned. But

00:08:21
comparison whispers otherwise. It's really the voice of the

00:08:25
enemy saying, you'd be more worthy if, you'd

00:08:29
feel more confident if, you'd be more lovable if.

00:08:34
Y'all, that voice is not from God. And

00:08:38
here's something important. When we can fast from comparison,

00:08:43
it's not that we're not— it's not that we are pretending

00:08:47
our bodies don't matter. It's that we are detaching our

00:08:50
identity from appearance.

00:08:54
And that can be some really holy work. I know it

00:08:58
was holy work for me to untether

00:09:02
everything I thought about myself

00:09:05
measuring up to some unrealistic expectation and

00:09:09
truly letting the way that

00:09:13
I think about myself, the way that I feel about myself, the way that I

00:09:16
care about myself, how I show up, the things that I do, really

00:09:20
be fueled by my

00:09:23
identity in Christ and, and not a

00:09:27
worldly identity, identity. So what can this

00:09:31
holy work look like practically? First,

00:09:34
it's really about building that awareness, noticing when

00:09:38
comparison starts. Is it when you're scrolling

00:09:42
or when you're trying on clothes or when you're standing next to

00:09:46
someone? Is it when summer approaches? Get

00:09:50
curious. When does comparison creep up on you?

00:09:54
Second, having boundaries is important.

00:09:58
Unfollow accounts that stir envy or jealousy or

00:10:01
comparison. Step away from

00:10:05
mirrors if it becomes a battleground for you.

00:10:09
And learn to limit conversations that revolve around dieting and weight

00:10:13
loss. And then third, it's

00:10:16
reorientation, right? The whole point of what we're

00:10:20
doing this Lent in fasting is to reorient

00:10:24
our lives, to let Christ be the center, to let him

00:10:28
reorder things. And one of the most powerful things that we

00:10:31
can reorient and reorder is our mind and our thoughts.

00:10:35
So when the thought arises, I wish I looked like her,

00:10:39
replace it with, I am made in the image of God and I

00:10:43
am a beloved daughter of God.

00:10:47
Y'all, it is not affirmation fluff. It has to be your

00:10:51
theological truth.

00:10:56
And that's that deeper shift, that your body is not

00:11:00
this, this ornament, but it's really

00:11:04
this instrument, this tool, this gift that

00:11:07
God has given your soul to live in.

00:11:12
It's how you love and how you serve, how you

00:11:15
hold your children, how you walk into church, how you

00:11:19
kneel in prayer. All the things that your body

00:11:23
allows you to do. But comparison

00:11:27
simply reduces the body to appearance.

00:11:31
God designed your body for mission,

00:11:35
to love and to serve. And when we detach from

00:11:38
comparison, we free ourselves to use our

00:11:42
bodies for this life-giving work.

00:11:46
Instead of obsessing over them. And

00:11:50
really, that's, that's like food freedom on a much deeper level.

00:11:55
Because when your identity is stable, y'all, your identity being rooted in

00:11:58
Christ is the answer to your body image

00:12:02
struggles. Nothing else out there is going

00:12:06
to shift your body image struggles until you

00:12:10
work on rooting your identity in Christ. Because when your

00:12:14
identity is stable, you no longer need food to manipulate your worth.

00:12:18
You no longer need restriction to feel superior.

00:12:22
You no longer need perfection to feel secure.

00:12:26
That rope loosens, that tether is

00:12:29
undone. And so this week,

00:12:33
I invite you into just one brave act to fast

00:12:37
from comparison. And maybe that means getting

00:12:41
off of social media for the whole week, or

00:12:44
turning your mirrors around. Or maybe it's not

00:12:48
asking how something makes you look.

00:12:51
Maybe it's choosing clothes simply for comfort,

00:12:55
not for camouflage to hide

00:12:59
flaws or whatever, right?

00:13:03
And if you find comparison rising this week, just really ask

00:13:07
yourself, how is this helping my heart rise, or is it tethering

00:13:14
We really need to learn to root our identity somewhere that is

00:13:17
unshakable, unchangeable, and that is only found in

00:13:21
God. Because when your identity is secure, everything

00:13:24
else falls into place, including food.

00:13:29
Just remember that your body image is

00:13:33
shaped by your self-image, the things that you think and

00:13:37
feel about yourself. The narrative, the story of

00:13:40
who you are, and let that story be told from

00:13:44
a place of God, of

00:13:48
what he says about you.

00:13:53
Thank you so much for spending this time here with me. I hope you have

00:13:55
a beautiful and blessed week. Remember, beauty held is the

00:13:59
seed, beauty shared is the flower. It is your time to bloom.

00:14:03
Take care and God Bye!
