Hey there friend! In this week's episode of the Nourished to Bloom podcast, we return to the familiar story of Cain and Abel—but instead of focusing only on sibling rivalry, we explore a quieter, deeper message about first fruits, priorities, and intentional living.
Have you ever reached the end of a busy day—completely exhausted—and realized that prayer, reflection, or time with God only gets whatever scraps of energy are left? If so, we're not alone. Together, we reflect on how easy it is to offer God what remains of us rather than the best of us—and how this ancient story gently invites us to choose differently.
This episode isn't about guilt, shame, or adding more to our plates. It's about realignment—learning to notice where our time, energy, and talents are going, and discerning how God may be inviting us to offer our first and best, instead of our leftovers.
In this episode, we explore:
✨ The deeper meaning behind the story of Cain and Abel and what "first fruits" look like in everyday life ✨ Why we so often give God (and ourselves) leftovers—and how to begin shifting our priorities with intention ✨ Practical ways to recognize where our time, energy, and gifts are currently being spent ✨ Encouragement for those of us in a "middle" season—especially women longing for clarity, purpose, or a renewed sense of calling ✨ The reassurance that God doesn't shame us for where we are—He lovingly invites us to choose again
Weekly Reflection Invitation: This week, we invite you to set aside a few quiet moments and prayerfully reflect:
- Where are we giving God our first fruits—our best time, energy, and attention?
- Where are we offering only what's left?
- What small, intentional shift might God be inviting us to make?
Bring this to prayer with honesty and trust—no guilt required.
Special Invitation: If we're feeling disconnected, unclear, or longing to discern what God is calling us into next, we're invited to a free retreat, Writing Your Next Chapter: Goal Setting with God, happening February 3rd at 11 a.m. Central (via Zoom). This retreat offers intentional space to slow down, reflect, and listen for God's invitation in this season.
Thank you for journeying with us. Remember—beauty held is the seed, beauty shared is the flower. It's our time to bloom. 🌸

I know this happens to so many of us, me included. We
00:00:04
have reached the end of the day. We are just so
00:00:08
ready to crawl into bed, completely spent. We lay our
00:00:12
heads down and we have this thought of,
00:00:16
gosh, I have nothing left. I'll give God whatever energy I have left,
00:00:20
only to realize there's almost nothing there, y'.
00:00:24
All. What if the problem isn't that we're doing too much, but that we're offering
00:00:27
God what remains of us instead of
00:00:31
the best of us? So today we're going to
00:00:35
do one of my favorite things and talk about scripture and how
00:00:39
when I have those moments that I read scripture and it just kind of speaks
00:00:42
to me. I'm going to share with you this episode of how
00:00:46
Scripture spoke to me when we were reading the Bible
00:00:49
story of Cain and Abel with my kids. And we
00:00:53
all know the story of Cain and Abel and it's one of the most heartbreaking
00:00:56
stories in scripture. But we're going to look at it not to talk about
00:00:59
rivalry or violence, but to uncover a quieter,
00:01:03
hidden message about first fruits and priorities
00:01:07
and the way we offer our lives back to God.
00:01:10
And I think it might change the way you look at your goals, how
00:01:14
you're spending your time, and the season you're finding yourself in right
00:01:18
now. Welcome to the Nourish

And I'm so happy you're here. Welcome to Nourish
00:02:51
to Bloom, where every day is a sacred invitation to
00:02:54
thrive. Hey there. Welcome back to the Nourish to
00:02:58
Bloom podcast. So happy to be here with you
00:03:02
this week. And we're doing one of my favorite things
00:03:06
where I feel like I read scripture and
00:03:09
God gives me this message to share. And so that's what we're going to do
00:03:13
today because we all know the story of Cain and Abel and. And
00:03:17
we all know that it's one of the saddest stories in scripture. And a
00:03:20
couple of days ago, we were reading the story of
00:03:24
Cain and Abel with all of us, our family, and
00:03:28
you know, you're sitting there, right? And I have two boys and it's like, okay,
00:03:30
boys, you really need to listen to this story. It's about two brothers and how
00:03:33
these two brothers are treating each other. And not that my boys are
00:03:37
super mean to each other, it's just they're boys and
00:03:41
it's like WWE in my house all the time,
00:03:45
right? And I feel like we do a really good job
00:03:49
of helping them realize, like, we are not comparing each other to
00:03:52
each of them, right? We really try to squash sibling rivalry and really
00:03:56
try to promote how they each have their own unique talents and gifts.
00:04:00
But anyway, we were sitting there reading the story of Cain and Abel.
00:04:04
And yes, we know on the surface it's about sibling
00:04:07
rivalry, about unchecked anger, about sin, sin and
00:04:11
how one can so quickly lead to another. And
00:04:14
it reminds us that violence and jealousy never
00:04:18
lead to anything life giving. But as we're
00:04:22
sitting there and we've read this and we're having this discussion,
00:04:26
I love this because my husband brought it up and it's. He and I were
00:04:29
on the same wavelength here, but just, you know, challenging
00:04:33
our kids to, okay, we know what the story was about, what happened and
00:04:37
how these brothers were treating each other. But, like, what do you think the deeper
00:04:41
message is? And so my husband pointed out that the
00:04:45
message is really tucked inside this story. One
00:04:48
that's maybe quieter or more subtle. We kind of just tend to
00:04:51
glaze over it because it is such a
00:04:55
gory story. But I think it's one that can speak directly
00:04:59
into how we are living our lives today, especially when it
00:05:03
comes to things like goals and
00:05:06
priority and how we're spending our time and our energy and our talents.
00:05:11
And so this, this message that's tucked inside this story, we can look at it
00:05:14
as. When these two brothers brought their offerings to God,
00:05:18
Abel gave from the first and the best of his flock. While
00:05:22
Cain, on the other hand, brought an offering too. But
00:05:25
scripture tells us it was not his best. He kept the
00:05:29
choicest portion for himself and offered God what
00:05:32
was left. So this, this message
00:05:36
that's tucked in there is really about what
00:05:40
we are giving to God. Our first fruits,
00:05:43
the best of us, or are we just giving what's left of us?
00:05:47
We know from scripture that Abel's gift pleased God, while
00:05:51
Cain's did not. And when Cain became angry and
00:05:54
discouraged, God did not reject him outright, but he
00:05:58
actually invited him to choose differently the next time.
00:06:02
But Cain stayed stuck and resentful,
00:06:06
closed off. And while we all know how that story
00:06:09
ends. And so maybe you're sitting here like, okay, Kara, this is
00:06:13
really, you know, far fetched, you're kind of grasping here. But
00:06:17
what does this ancient story really have to do with me and my life today?
00:06:21
And y', all, it's really what the heart of this story is about. And it's
00:06:24
not just about the brothers, but it's about the offerings. It's about those first
00:06:28
fruits versus the leftovers. Recognizing that Abel
00:06:32
gave God his first fruits and that was pleasing to God, and
00:06:36
Cain gave God what remained. And while God wasn't
00:06:40
upset with him, he actually offered Cain something different.
00:06:45
But Cain chose not to. And if we're being honest,
00:06:49
most of us have lived seasons where we've done this exact same.
00:06:53
I know that I've had many days and maybe even long seasons where I
00:06:57
didn't give God the best of me. I just gave him what was left of
00:07:00
me. You know, just a tired prayer at the end of the day
00:07:04
without actually spending some quality time with Him.
00:07:08
A distracted moment squeezed in between tasks,
00:07:12
A half present heart only asking, asking,
00:07:16
asking, never praising or thinking or recognizing
00:07:20
his presence in my life. And we're often
00:07:23
even guilty of this in very subtle ways. I think three things that
00:07:27
really stand out to me is we give our time away.
00:07:31
First to scrolling, to busyness, to filling
00:07:35
every quiet moment. And then we just offer God
00:07:39
whatever scraps remain. Or maybe we spend our
00:07:43
mental and emotional energy on comparison and drama,
00:07:47
worry and overthinking. And this leaves us little space
00:07:50
for discernment, peace, or just simply
00:07:54
trying to listen for his voice. And lastly, we
00:07:58
pour out our talents into things that keep us busy but are
00:08:01
not aligned with our mission or Maybe we hide them
00:08:05
all together because stepping forward in holy boldness feels scary
00:08:09
or risky. Because using our talents and
00:08:13
using our gifts, using our time and our energy
00:08:17
in a fruitful way requires us to trust,
00:08:22
to surrender and to have courage.
00:08:26
And you know, sometimes it's not even like resistance to this.
00:08:30
Sometimes we really want to give God our first fruits, but we
00:08:34
honestly don't know what they are. And I
00:08:37
see this come up all the time with moms and women
00:08:41
who are in this middle motherhood phase of life
00:08:45
where it's like they've kind of got the things they wanted, they're
00:08:49
living that dream life, and now they just feel kind of lost or
00:08:53
maybe dissatisfied, and they want
00:08:57
to give God their best, but they just don't know what that is.
00:09:02
Maybe you feel a longing for more clarity, a
00:09:06
better sense of direction, a sense of calling.
00:09:10
But maybe you're stuck asking, what is God
00:09:13
exactly inviting you into right now? What am I meant to offer him
00:09:17
in this season? And this is why I think
00:09:20
coaching is such a beautiful opportunity, is that it allows us
00:09:24
to explore these things specifically, what are
00:09:28
our first fruits? And so if you find yourself in this this kind
00:09:32
of stuck, lost, not really sure what your
00:09:35
first fruits are, but are so eager to discover what
00:09:39
you can offer the lor I want to take a moment to just
00:09:43
personally invite you to join me for the next free retreat writing
00:09:46
your next chapter, Goal Setting with God. It's happening on February
00:09:50
3rd at 11:00am Central Time via Zoom, and you can
00:09:54
find the link to sign up for that in the show description.
00:09:59
Please come join us and walk away with
00:10:02
and spend this time in this retreat in an intentional prayerful
00:10:06
space, one that allows you to slow down and get clear
00:10:10
on what God is calling you to. Not just what
00:10:14
you should be doing, but who he's inviting you to be.
00:10:17
And it's really that chance to reconnect with your gifts and your desires
00:10:21
and your vocation, and to offer, not God, just
00:10:25
what's left of you, but truly and wholly the gift of
00:10:28
yourself. It's an opportunity to find
00:10:32
your inner able, not in striving, but in trust
00:10:36
and a chance to praise God for the goodness in your life
00:10:39
by giving him your first fruits. So
00:10:44
please come join that retreat. You can again find the registration in the show
00:10:47
notes. But as we leave our time here, I want to challenge
00:10:51
you and invite you into just simple
00:10:54
reflection this week. Take some time, sit down
00:10:59
in a quiet space and reflects
00:11:02
on where in your life are you giving God your first fruits,
00:11:06
your best time, your best energy and your most attentive
00:11:10
heart. And where might you be giving him
00:11:14
only what's left. And bring
00:11:17
that honestly to prayer, y'. All. It's not about guilt. It's not about
00:11:21
inducing shame. It's just being open
00:11:25
and recognizing where you have an opportunity
00:11:29
to grow, where you have an opportunity to be guided
00:11:33
into deeper relationship with him. And so, as
00:11:37
you identify where you may be only giving him what's left of
00:11:41
you, ask him, lord, are you inviting me to choose differently?
00:11:46
And trust that he's going to meet you there with mercy,
00:11:50
clarity, compassion, and grace.
00:11:55
Y', all, I thank you so much for spending this time here with me this
00:11:58
week. I hope you have a beautiful and blessed week. Remember, beauty
00:12:02
held is the seed, beauty shared is the flower. It is your
00:12:06
time to bloom. I'll see you next week. Until
00:12:10
then, take care. Bye. Bye.
