Welcome to Nourish to Bloom, where every day is a sacred

00:02:22
invitation to thrive.

00:02:27
Hey there. Welcome to the Nourish to Bloom podcast. So

00:02:30
happy to be spending some time here with you this week

00:02:34
and as we welcome a new year.

00:02:38
I know that for many of us it's

00:02:43
back to work and kids are back to school, but for me

00:02:46
and my family, we actually have a whole nother week off and it's kind

00:02:50
of. I'm liking it more and more every year

00:02:54
that this happens. Last year we took a trip during this week when the kids

00:02:57
didn't have school. This year we're just kind of laying low. But

00:03:01
what's wonderful is that the weather is cooperating and our highs are like in

00:03:05
the 70s, so my kids can spend time just running

00:03:08
around playing outside. And I feel like it kind of gives us this nice little

00:03:13
break, like at Christmas, right? Because for

00:03:17
my family and I, we spend most of the holidays traveling to see family

00:03:20
and it's just chaos. So this just kind of, I feel like, gives us a.

00:03:24
A chance to settle in, to spend some

00:03:28
quality time together. And

00:03:32
yeah, that's where we are. So I hope that your new year

00:03:36
is being welcomed with some peace and some hope and

00:03:39
that it's off to a great start. Start now. With that said, I know many

00:03:43
of you are focused on New Year's resolutions and trying to make

00:03:47
changes, trying to maybe let go of some old

00:03:51
habits and build new habits. And so I wanted to just

00:03:54
take this episode to offer you some tools, some

00:03:58
that I'm using this year, some that I've used in years past

00:04:02
to kind of help you with maybe staying focused and

00:04:06
grounded and motivated as you're trying to make these changes. But

00:04:09
all in a faith filled way, one that really allows you

00:04:13
to continue to lean on the Lord as you're

00:04:17
making these changes, to invite him into that

00:04:20
transformation, really allowing him to guide you

00:04:24
and to do the work alongside with you. So that's what we're going to go

00:04:28
through today is just some tools that I think can help you with staying focused

00:04:31
and grounded. So the first one, and a lot of people do this,

00:04:35
is coming up with a word for the year.

00:04:39
Now, I've definitely done this in the past and I think last year my word

00:04:42
was surrender. And that was something that I really, really leaned into,

00:04:46
was just learning to let go of

00:04:50
some stuff. Okay, sorry about that. If

00:04:54
you picked up on a little interruption again, kids are home

00:04:58
and I have two boys. And then so it's like WWE 24

00:05:01
7. And so they were outside playing and one hit the

00:05:05
other one's head with his nose. Um, so we were dealing with a bloody

00:05:09
nose. Thankfully it doesn't look like anything's broken, but y', all, never a

00:05:12
dull moment. So getting back to this idea of word of the year,

00:05:17
like I said, I did it last year, my word was surrender. I felt

00:05:20
so deeply that that was really what I needed

00:05:24
to do to learn to let Go

00:05:27
and really let the Lord work. Let him

00:05:32
do the transforming, right? So not focusing so much on

00:05:35
the outcomes and wanting it to come a different way, but really just showing

00:05:39
and the way that I knew the Lord was asking me to. This year,

00:05:43
my family did something, I don't know, a little

00:05:47
fun. I had gotten this email from

00:05:51
Beahart Design, who she has a Catholic

00:05:54
shop, and she's one of my favorite little designers, and she has

00:05:58
cute little products. But she sent out an email to, like,

00:06:02
her followers, and she said that she went through.

00:06:05
Through Jen Fulweiler, who. If you don't know who Jen Fulweiler is,

00:06:09
she's a Catholic comedian. She had a Word of

00:06:13
the Year generator site, and so she generated her Word of the Year

00:06:17
using that. And I was like, oh, that sounds fun. Let's just see what it.

00:06:20
What it is. So we and my family, we all went

00:06:24
and discovered our Words of the Year using Jen Fulwiler's

00:06:28
Word Generator. And so my word happened to be sweet. And I

00:06:32
was like, well, that's interesting. Not really

00:06:36
sure what. What the Lord may be

00:06:39
meaning by that. I'm hoping it means nothing too terrible. But

00:06:43
what I, you know, kind of took that as was something that's kind of been

00:06:46
in the back of my mind was recommitting to

00:06:50
joyful movement and really making sure that I

00:06:54
am focusing on kind of all aspects of movement. So. So

00:06:57
last year, I did a lot of walking. Just

00:07:01
a lot of walking. I spent some time

00:07:05
in a gym doing strength training, but kind of

00:07:09
hurt my shoulder towards the end of the year. And so I really took this

00:07:12
idea of sweat to mean to focus more

00:07:16
on my cardiovascular movement. So that's what

00:07:20
I'm looking to do, is to try to get my heart rate up a

00:07:24
little bit more in 2026 and incorporate some more

00:07:27
cardiovascular movement. I also kind of took it at

00:07:31
sweat as into

00:07:35
get out of my comfort zone, you know,

00:07:39
being able to not be discouraged when things

00:07:43
don't go exactly how I want them to, but really just being able to

00:07:47
kind of put that. That work in

00:07:51
being in. In uncomfortable

00:07:55
situations where, I mean, I'm putting myself out there and just kind

00:07:58
of putting that, you know, that. That elbow grease into whatever it is that

00:08:02
I'm doing. And so that's really kind of how I kind of took the word

00:08:05
sweat. Now, you know, each one in my family got a different word.

00:08:08
My daughter got organized, which we all had a great time laughing

00:08:12
about, because she is not the most organized person.

00:08:16
Her room is always a complete mess. If we fight over anything,

00:08:20
it is the state of her room. And so the fact that she was handed

00:08:23
the word organized as her of the year was quite comical

00:08:27
and hoping that she can embody that for the next year.

00:08:31
One of my sons got the word read. And, you know,

00:08:35
before the end of the year, we were really struggling

00:08:38
in school with English Language Arts.

00:08:42
He's dyslexic. And with some of the tests that they're having to do,

00:08:46
there's a lot of reading that goes with the passages.

00:08:49
And so, you know, one of the things that the teacher and I talked about

00:08:52
was trying to build his style, stamina, so how appropriate it

00:08:56
was for his word to be read. My husband's

00:09:00
word was commit. Now, my husband is not the

00:09:04
most decisive person. He does not like to make decisions

00:09:07
very often. And so we took that as, you know, being able to

00:09:11
commit to a decision, making a choice.

00:09:15
So if you want a kind of fun way to have a word of

00:09:19
the year, choose you. I highly recommend going to

00:09:22
Jen Fullweiler's name or Word of the Year generator

00:09:26
and checking out and, you know, send me an email@it's

00:09:30
caraara tractor.com and let me know what your word of the year ends up being.

00:09:33
I'd love to know. I will go ahead and drop the link for

00:09:37
that name generator site in the show

00:09:40
description. Now, that also kind of leads into this idea, and

00:09:44
I didn't use this, but Jen Fullweiler also has a

00:09:48
saint name generator. You could also

00:09:53
focus on a Saint of the Year and really

00:09:56
allowing that to help be something that you lean into,

00:10:00
learning more about this saint, leaning into

00:10:03
intercessory prayers and asking this saint to,

00:10:08
you know, offer up your petitions, offer up petitions

00:10:11
on your behalf. I've actually done a Saint of the Year

00:10:15
in the past. I didn't do it through, you know, a saint generator, but I

00:10:19
just happened to choose St. Edith Stein, who is

00:10:23
also St. Teresa Benedicta of the

00:10:26
Cross. And I just really loved the message that

00:10:30
she had about women and

00:10:34
the character and the virtues and the

00:10:38
uniqueness in which women were created. And so for that year, I

00:10:42
really studied more about her,

00:10:46
learned more about her, used her writings as, as a.

00:10:50
As a tool to help me move forward. So that's also something

00:10:54
you can try, is a. Is a Saint of the Year and

00:10:58
seeing, you know, how that can help you stay grounded and focused

00:11:01
and a beautiful example of

00:11:05
living in holiness and living in virtue.

00:11:09
And so my third tool to help you kind of stay focused and

00:11:12
grounded is something that we've all Heard of, but it's a gratitude

00:11:16
journal. Now, I like this idea of

00:11:19
gratitude journals, especially if you are working towards

00:11:23
a new goal or trying to change a habit. Because

00:11:27
what we tend to focus on when we are trying to

00:11:31
change something to get a different result is we

00:11:35
like to focus on how it is not working for us, all the

00:11:39
things that are not changing. And so a gratitude journal can really

00:11:42
help you focus on progress

00:11:46
and wins. Think the little things that

00:11:50
are changing, because we know that it's these little

00:11:54
wins that lead to that overall progress. And so, you know,

00:11:58
we may desire this outcome, and we can get really frustrated when it

00:12:02
doesn't happen very quickly. But the thing is, is that we

00:12:05
can't really know how long growth is going to take.

00:12:09
You've heard me say it. One of my favorite things is that God's plan for

00:12:12
us takes a lifetime. And so when you can lean into a gratitude journ

00:12:16
journal, it allows you to focus on that progress and those wins.

00:12:20
And if you go deeper with it, really ask yourself

00:12:23
and challenge yourself when you're thinking about

00:12:27
what you are grateful for on any given day. Asking yourself the

00:12:31
question, how did the Lord move in my life?

00:12:35
Let it be evidence of, you know, kind of the God

00:12:38
winks that we hear, the things that he revealed to you throughout the day that

00:12:42
you can lean into that helps to remind you

00:12:47
where he is present, how he is showing up.

00:12:51
And I think that that's a really beautiful way to express gratitude instead of

00:12:54
just kind of the classical like, oh, I'm grateful for

00:12:59
my family or my health, which those are all wonderful things to be grateful for.

00:13:03
But I think that we can go deeper in that gratitude, and

00:13:06
it really, really allows us to see where the Lord's

00:13:10
presence is in our life. Okay? And so kind of

00:13:14
the last tool that I have is you can pick a

00:13:18
scripture of the year, right? Being able to

00:13:21
kind of have this scripture that's going to help keep you motivated, that

00:13:25
kind of allows it to be like your. Your

00:13:29
banner, like the summary of. Of your year.

00:13:33
Right? And so I have a couple that I want to share with you that

00:13:36
I think would be, you know, helpful or appropriate that you

00:13:39
can. Can borrow or to. And so the first ones is

00:13:43
Ephesians, chapter 2, verse 10. For we are his

00:13:47
handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God

00:13:50
has prepared in advance that we should live in them.

00:13:55
And so, y', all, God has always had a plan for you, and he's always

00:13:58
had a plan for me, and he has always known what he would bring

00:14:03
to you what he wants you to do. And. And the goodness

00:14:07
that whatever your yes, that you are giving

00:14:10
him would bring, that your life has meaning and that

00:14:14
you are enough for God's plan, and that you're

00:14:17
exactly what he wants and needs for whatever the task is.

00:14:22
Just remember that you were. You were made in

00:14:25
God's image, that you are the goodness

00:14:29
and exactly what it is that he needs.

00:14:34
Excuse me. So my Second verse is Second Corinthians, chapter 5, verse

00:14:38
17. If anyone is in Christ, she is a

00:14:41
new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, the new

00:14:45
has come. Right? So this is really about

00:14:51
letting God transform you. Maybe there's this big

00:14:54
goal that you're working on, this transformation that you're longing for.

00:14:58
And when we can surrender it to the Lord and allow him

00:15:03
to work in whatever that goal is,

00:15:06
you become that new creation, that that change in that

00:15:10
growth that you desire will happen. And

00:15:14
just knowing that it's a continuous process, that each step of the

00:15:17
journey is going to be one that continues to challenge you, but

00:15:21
one that continues to change you, and that he's going to continue

00:15:25
to mold you like the clay in the potter's hand,

00:15:29
that you are constantly becoming who he created you

00:15:33
to be. The next one is more of

00:15:37
just kind of a quote from St. Paul. Have no anxiety,

00:15:40
but with prayer and petitions, make your requests known to God.

00:15:44
It's scripture. I don't have the. The verse written down, but

00:15:48
it's from one of the letters of St. Paul. Right? But just knowing that we

00:15:51
can ask the Lord for what we need, even if it's

00:15:55
the silliest thing, he hears us and he's going to

00:15:59
answer us, right? That he knows our heart

00:16:02
and he knows whatever it is that you're struggling with. But

00:16:06
we can, we can. I think we can really embody that

00:16:09
conversation, that we can

00:16:13
be blunt and express our feelings. I. I did

00:16:17
this journaling today and, you know, told him, like, where I

00:16:21
was feeling disappointed, where I was feeling hopeless,

00:16:25
and just laying that there, that he knows

00:16:28
how I feel. And

00:16:32
knowing that in laying it there, that he is going to

00:16:37
take this struggle and he's going to

00:16:40
transform it. And that through this struggle, he's going to provide

00:16:44
exactly what it is that I'm going to need to get through this

00:16:48
difficult time. The next One

00:16:51
is Psalm 119, verse 105. Your word is

00:16:55
a lamp to my feet and a light to guide my path.

00:16:59
Now this, I think, is especially helpful

00:17:03
as we are, you know, maybe working towards new things

00:17:07
because we do not always know what the next

00:17:11
step is, but God already has that course charted out.

00:17:15
He is your gps. He is telling you when to make the

00:17:19
next turn, when to pull over to refuel and rest. And

00:17:23
he's your protector. If you happen to make a wrong turn and end

00:17:26
up in a not so great destination, he's going

00:17:30
to reroute your way and get you back on track.

00:17:35
Right? And I think this is especially true when we choose

00:17:38
not to follow our God

00:17:42
given gps because we think that we know a shortcut, shut

00:17:46
court shortcut, that we can get there faster if we do it this

00:17:50
way. But we know that really we have to let the Lord

00:17:54
guide us and we have to let the Lord be that lamb that's going to

00:17:57
guide our path and show us his way. The

00:18:01
way that leads us to, to goodness, that leads us to holiness, that

00:18:05
leads us to virtue. Okay? And the

00:18:09
last piece of scripture I want to share with you that

00:18:12
you may claim for this year is Jeremiah 29:11.

00:18:16
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord,

00:18:20
plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you

00:18:24
hope and future, y'. All. I know that going

00:18:27
after goals or dreams can be scary, but if

00:18:31
God is calling you to this certain thing, there is

00:18:35
sure to be abundant goodness. Like he

00:18:39
wants you to choose your greatest good and wants the absolute best

00:18:43
for you. You are his beloved daughter. And much in the same way

00:18:46
that we want what's best for our own children and our loved ones,

00:18:50
we try to give them everything they will need to prosper and just

00:18:54
trust that the Lord is going to give you that and in a

00:18:58
much better way than we could in any sort of human capacity.

00:19:03
So I hope that these tools can really help

00:19:07
start you off on the right foot with whatever goal or whatever

00:19:11
changes you're trying to make in 2026. Now, I will

00:19:14
say most people start January off with a lot of motivation,

00:19:19
but most people also get to the end of January and find that

00:19:23
whatever it is that they have chosen is not sustainable

00:19:27
or it's not going the way they want. And so I

00:19:30
want to invite you to join

00:19:34
me at the beginning of February. Specifically, it's going to be

00:19:38
on February. Sorry,

00:19:42
I want to make sure I get there February 3rd, which is a Tuesday

00:19:45
at 11am Central. We are going to do the next

00:19:50
writing your next chapter retreat. And this one

00:19:54
is all about goal setting with God. So maybe you do have

00:19:57
this goal in mind, but it just needs to be refined. It needs to be

00:20:01
tweaked to make it more aligned with what God's plan is

00:20:04
for you. And so I invite you to join me on this Goal Setting

00:20:08
with God retreat to really help you

00:20:12
renew whatever goal you have for this year. To

00:20:15
really help you refine and react recommit

00:20:19
to what the Lord is asking and calling you to.

00:20:23
So again you will find that registration in the

00:20:27
show description. There's a link there. Click on it, go ahead and

00:20:31
sign up. Invite a friend to join. It's really just a time to help us,

00:20:35
you know when it tends to be the hardest to stay

00:20:39
committed to our goals. So the retreat is really going to help you

00:20:43
again re establish and recommit to your goal for

00:20:46
2026, but in a way that is 100%

00:20:50
aligned with God and and his plan for you. So I hope that you'll

00:20:53
join me for that retreat. Until

00:20:57
then, remember, beauty held is the seed, beauty shared is the flower. It is

00:21:01
your time to bloom. Thanks so much for joining me this week

00:21:04
and I will see you right back here in a week. Until then, take care.
