Have you ever been folding laundry or sitting in the carpool line when, out of nowhere, you feel that little gut-punch moment of clarity— "Wait… when did I start measuring my worth by everything except what God says about me?" 🫠
You're not the only one. This week on Nourished to Bloom, we're diving into the powerful parable of the prodigal son—and reframing it as our story as women in middle motherhood.
So many of us "wander" in quiet, subtle ways… not by rejecting God, but by forgetting who we are in Him. We hand our worth, our dignity, and our identity over to the world—chasing body perfection, chasing hustle, chasing standards God never asked us to meet. And yet, just like the father in the parable, God is already running toward us with open arms, ready to restore what we've lost.
This episode was born out of a beautiful Holy Spirit moment with a client who leads an apostolate for praying for prodigals. Our conversation opened our eyes to the truth: Middle motherhood might be our prodigal moment—the moment we "come to our senses" and begin our homecoming back to God and to ourselves.
✨ Key Takeaways from Episode 94
- ✨ How the story of the prodigal son speaks directly into the exhaustion, restlessness, and identity fog of middle motherhood
- ✨ The real ways we "squander our inheritance" by giving our worth to the world—diet culture, body pressure, comparison, productivity
- ✨ The Holy Spirit insight that connected this parable to our relationship with food, our bodies, and our sense of self
- ✨ Why this season of life is often our invitation to return—without shame—into the Father's embrace
- ✨ Encouragement to rebuild our identity in God's truth instead of the world's expectations
- ✨ A reminder that our story isn't over… and God is already running to meet us
If you've been feeling a little lost, a little stretched thin, or like you've wandered away from who you truly are, this episode is a gentle, hope-filled homecoming.

folding laundry, or in maybe one of those rare quiet

moments when your kids are fully occupied. And it's this
00:00:20
moment where you think, like, when did I start measuring my worth by
00:00:23
everything else? Accept what God says about me.

And I'm so happy you're here. Welcome to Nourish
00:02:42
to bloom, where every day is a sacred invitation to
00:02:46
thrive. Hey there. Welcome back to the Nourish to
00:02:49
Bloom podcast. So happy to be spending some time here with you this
00:02:53
week. Full disclosure, I am recovering
00:02:57
from a cold or something like that, so my voice sounds a
00:03:01
little funny. I'm super congested. And like, of course, it hits
00:03:05
the week before all the kids get out of school for Christmas,
00:03:08
and there's just a million things to do. But
00:03:12
I'm taking it as the signal of the Lord telling me, like, Kara,
00:03:17
make sure that you're focused on what is your priority and
00:03:20
making sure that I'm getting good rest so I can actually enjoy Christmas.
00:03:24
So many of the other things, the extras that
00:03:28
were on the docket can 100% fall by the
00:03:32
wayside. And we are taking it day by day. And,
00:03:36
I mean, it's funny when you get to these moments and, like, you just really
00:03:39
start to remember what is most important.
00:03:43
And we finally got our Christmas tree. We went to our local Christmas
00:03:47
tree farm and cut it down. And y', all, the Christmas trees in Texas are
00:03:51
very different. Our quote unquote native Christmas trees are
00:03:55
Afghan pines or Arizona cypresses. So they're not
00:03:59
like the pine trees that you find in other parts of the country. But
00:04:02
we have a lot of fun with that tradition of cutting
00:04:06
down our Christmas tree. And so we finally got it, and it sat in
00:04:10
the garage over the weekend. And then I got sick sat Saturday night, and
00:04:13
yesterday I was just kind of completely worthless. And so I
00:04:17
asked my husband to put the lights on the tree. And full disclosure,
00:04:21
he does not do it exactly the way that I want it to be done.
00:04:26
But, y', all, it is done, and I didn't have to do it, and I
00:04:29
am so grateful for that. So, anyway, this
00:04:33
is the season that we are in, and I'm really excited to talk
00:04:37
to you about this
00:04:40
moment that I had with the parable of the prodigal son.
00:04:44
And I've told y' all and I've shared before that, you know, I have these
00:04:48
moments where the Lord really puts something in my heart and on my mind and
00:04:52
something to share. And this is another
00:04:55
example of that. And it's kind of one of those. Those
00:04:59
moments, those Holy Spirit moments, or when I look back on it, it, like, it
00:05:02
can give me chills because it's literally something I had
00:05:06
never thought about before. To kind of lay the context, I was
00:05:10
in a session with a client, and we were discussing some stuff, and
00:05:14
I'll kind of get into it, but Literally, I'd never
00:05:19
made this comparison of the prodigal son and
00:05:23
with what we do as women. And
00:05:27
the Holy Spirit literally just put it in my lap to share with her. And,
00:05:30
like I said, never thought about it that way, but it was one of those,
00:05:33
like, aha moments, those clarity moments of, like, oh, my
00:05:37
goodness, how many times am I, the prodigal son, and I
00:05:41
wander away from the Lord to pursue some other worldly
00:05:44
desire? And I think this is important because
00:05:48
really, leaning into the story of the prodigal son can help reframe
00:05:52
the way that we see the season that we're in, that season of middle
00:05:55
motherhood. And honestly, it might help reframe
00:05:59
how you see the way that you are living your entire
00:06:03
life. And, you know, are you focused on. On
00:06:07
God? Are you focused on preparing for eternity, or
00:06:10
are you focused on the worldly desires?
00:06:15
And so, to get into a little bit more about the story with
00:06:19
this recent client session, and she has an apostolate
00:06:22
called Praying for the Prodigals. And it's a ministry that's
00:06:26
rooted in interceding and praying for children and
00:06:30
loved ones who have wandered away from Catholic faith.
00:06:33
And so, as you can imagine, the parable of the prodigal son is
00:06:37
really close to her heart. It's not just, you know, a piece of
00:06:41
scripture, but it's really personal. And it. I think
00:06:45
it really symbolizes the ache and the hope and.
00:06:49
And the prayer that she carried as she
00:06:52
prayed for her children to return to the church, and the one that she
00:06:56
prays and walks with others who are praying for their children
00:07:00
return to the faith. And so, as she and I were in this session,
00:07:03
we were talking through some of the struggles that she had been face facing.
00:07:07
Some around her relationship with food and her body, some around,
00:07:11
you know, trying to grow the apostolate of what the Lord is calling her to
00:07:14
do with it. And like I said, the Holy Spirit really
00:07:18
just dropped something in that session that I think, you
00:07:22
know, neither one of us really expected. And it was kind of
00:07:26
this realization that so many of us are living our own version of
00:07:29
the prodigal story every day. And
00:07:33
maybe it's not by leaving the church and, you know, not by running
00:07:37
from God in kind of those dramatic, obvious ways, but
00:07:41
kind of in that subtle, quiet, daily way that we forget who we
00:07:44
are. And in the parable, the son takes his
00:07:48
inheritance, his identity, his belongings,
00:07:52
his dignity, and he just walks straight out the door, and then he
00:07:55
squanders it on the world. And, y', all, if we take A moment. And
00:07:59
we reflect on this. I think this is what so many of us do,
00:08:03
especially kind of early on in our adult life, you know,
00:08:07
our 20s and into our 30s, we.
00:08:11
We kind of. We go to the Lord and. And we know that we're these
00:08:14
beloved daughters and we know who we are and that we're made in his image.
00:08:18
And then the very next moment, we take that inheritance.
00:08:21
We take our worth and we take our identity and
00:08:25
we run. And we spend it all on the ways of the
00:08:29
world. We chase a number on the scale. We
00:08:32
chase productivity to prove our worth. We chase
00:08:36
body perfection to feel seen. We chase the
00:08:40
expectations that society hands us, the shoulds. We
00:08:44
chase being the good mom, the thin mom, the put together mom.
00:08:47
We chase our value everywhere except for
00:08:51
the Lord's embrace. And so just like that, prodigal,
00:08:55
we take our inheritance, our dignity, our belovedness, and we
00:08:59
hand it over to the world. And we squander it.
00:09:02
We're squandering it on comparison. We're squandering it on pressure.
00:09:06
We're squandering it on doing and performing and
00:09:10
hustling and improving. But this
00:09:13
is your moment, y'. All. This is the moment when we can all come
00:09:17
to our senses. Just like the scripture says, he came to his
00:09:21
senses. It's describing the moment that the prodigal
00:09:25
son finally sees clearly that
00:09:29
what he is doing, that that isn't who he is, that it
00:09:32
isn't where he belongs, and that he is living
00:09:36
really beneath his identity, his belovedness.
00:09:42
And like this is that thread that the Holy Spirit really
00:09:45
wove so clearly during that session is that
00:09:50
this moment, this middle motherhood moment, is our own prodigal
00:09:53
moment. It's a moment in our life where things
00:09:57
have shifted. You know, our kids are growing,
00:10:01
the dynamics in our house are changing, the noise is
00:10:05
quieting, at least sometimes. And suddenly it's like this
00:10:09
moment where you have that realization of you're hearing your own
00:10:12
heart again. The Lord is putting something in your heart.
00:10:16
And it's a moment where you can realize, like,
00:10:20
I've been handing my worth to the world, to all the
00:10:24
shoulds, to the societal pressures. I've been measuring
00:10:27
myself by things that God never asked me to measure. And
00:10:31
I've been living as if I'm farther from the Father than I
00:10:35
truly am. And so this is that moment where you
00:10:38
can come to your senses and say, I want to come home
00:10:44
without shame, without guilt, and without self
00:10:48
punishment, but with the same confidence
00:10:51
that Jesus builds into that story that he
00:10:55
is going to be that father running towards us, that he's going to gather us
00:10:59
into our arms and rejoice,
00:11:02
for we have come home and he is
00:11:06
going to restore our identity.
00:11:10
In this moment right now, whatever season, whatever struggle, whatever
00:11:14
chaos you're in, this is your prodigal moment.
00:11:19
This is the moment where you have the opportunity to say, lord, I'm sorry
00:11:23
that I've been giving the world what belonged to you, my worth
00:11:26
and my identity, my heart, my mission,
00:11:30
and ask him to show you who you are again, to
00:11:34
show you, you know, what he's calling you to,
00:11:39
the mission that you have in this middle motherhood season.
00:11:43
And y', all, he will. He's going to. He already
00:11:47
is. And he, like, I want you to stop and imagine that he is
00:11:51
just running to you right now with open arms,
00:11:54
ready to greet you, rejoicing that you
00:11:58
have come to your senses and that you are.
00:12:02
Are ready to come home and be embraced by him and
00:12:06
live in his love and his guidance.
00:12:10
And so if this episode resonates with you, like, if you're like, all
00:12:14
right, like, I can see that this is my prodigal moment. This is the
00:12:17
moment that I want to
00:12:21
be fully restored to the Lord. I invite you to take a.
00:12:25
Take some time and go back and watch the replay of the writing, your
00:12:29
next chapter mini retreat. Because it's really
00:12:33
beautiful to be able to walk through kind of this exact
00:12:36
moment of coming home, to really
00:12:40
have some clarity, to understand a little bit more about your
00:12:44
calling, to be able to start
00:12:47
rebuilding the foundation of your identity all
00:12:51
within the Father's heart. And so if today's episode
00:12:54
stirred something in you, if you have felt that Holy Spirit,
00:12:58
you know, weaving that thread for you, and you're realizing that you've been
00:13:02
living far from your own belovedness like so many of us have.
00:13:06
Let the Lord show you who you are and what he's inviting you to
00:13:10
into this next chapter of your life. You can catch that
00:13:14
replay by clicking the link in the show description. Y',
00:13:17
all, this is your homecoming moment. Your story is not
00:13:21
lost. Your mission is not gone. Your
00:13:25
identity is not misplaced. You're just simply being invited
00:13:28
back to the Father, to yourself, and to the
00:13:32
woman that God created you to be. Thank you so much
00:13:36
for spending this time here with me. I feel so blessed to be able
00:13:40
to share this story with you, and I pray that it moves
00:13:43
something in your heart. And I hope you have a beautiful and blessed
00:13:47
week. Week. And I will see you next week. Talk soon. Bye.
