Do you ever find yourself standing in the pantry, craving something sweet or salty—even when we're not really hungry—and immediately spiral into guilt? "Why can't I just have more willpower?" Sound familiar? We've all been there.
In this episode of Nourished to Bloom, we're kicking off a brand-new series all about cravings. Together, we'll explore what's really happening when a craving hits—and spoiler alert: it's not a character flaw. Our cravings are actually clues from our body, mind, and even our soul, pointing to what we truly need.
We'll share how many of us have felt out of control around "trigger foods" (hello, sweet tooth and 3PM chips!), and how curiosity, rather than shame, can change everything. Sometimes cravings signal a physical need—like skipped meals, fatigue, or low energy. Other times, they reveal emotional or spiritual hunger—comfort, joy, or a deeper connection with God.
Here's what we'll cover in this episode: 🌱 Why cravings are not proof of weakness—they're signals meant to guide us ⚡ How to tell the difference between physical cravings and emotional or mental cravings 🙏 A simple "Pause, Pray & Proceed" tool so we can respond to cravings with grace instead of guilt 💌 Reflections on how cravings can point us toward a deeper relationship with God

Welcome to Nourish to Bloom, where every day is a sacred
00:02:10
invitation to thrive. Hey there. Welcome back
00:02:14
to the Nourish to Bloom podcast. So happy to be spending some time
00:02:17
here with you this week. I hope your week is off to a
00:02:21
great start and today we're kicking off a brand new
00:02:24
series all about cravings. We're going to explore
00:02:28
what they really mean, how to handle them, and how to find peace
00:02:32
around them and freedom around these trigger
00:02:36
foods. I mean, let's be honest, when we think
00:02:39
about cravings, many of Us often think about
00:02:43
weakness. We think, I have no willpower.
00:02:47
I shouldn't want this. I was doing so well and
00:02:50
now I blew it. This, though, is what
00:02:54
diet culture has taught. It taught us that craving certain
00:02:57
foods means that we failed somehow. But the truth is,
00:03:01
your cravings aren't the problem. They're really a form of
00:03:05
communication. Trust me when I say this was
00:03:09
a really difficult concept for me to grasp in my own
00:03:12
journey to food freedom. I felt like I
00:03:16
had an uncontrollable sweet tooth. The afternoon would hit and I
00:03:20
would be like elbow deep in a bag of chips and just could not
00:03:23
understand why I could not feel in control
00:03:27
around these trigger foods. And what
00:03:31
I learned was a lot of things. One, that I needed
00:03:35
to really learn and build that trust around
00:03:39
these foods by regularly exposing
00:03:42
myself to them. But two, also going a little
00:03:46
bit deeper and understanding what these cravings
00:03:49
I was experiencing were really trying to tell me.
00:03:53
They were this surface level clue of a
00:03:57
deeper need, a deeper want that I was
00:04:01
really craving to have fulfilled. And
00:04:05
my body was just trying to say, hey,
00:04:08
something's going on, something's missing, let's pay attention.
00:04:13
And so what we know is that these, this, this form of communication
00:04:16
through our cravings. It's sometimes saying that, that something
00:04:20
that we may need or really desire is something
00:04:24
physical. Like maybe you skipped breakfast or you've been
00:04:27
running on fumes all day, or you're not getting enough sleep, sleep
00:04:31
or quality rest, or you're missing certain nutrients and
00:04:35
your body is giving you these, these cravings as a sign and a
00:04:38
clue of like, hey, this needs to be met.
00:04:42
While other times that craving really isn't physical at all.
00:04:45
It's really emotionally driven or maybe
00:04:49
even spiritually driven. Maybe you're craving rest
00:04:53
or comfort, joy, connection, peace. Peace.
00:04:57
And food has just really become the quickest and the
00:05:01
easiest way for you to get a quick version of
00:05:05
that feeling of what it is that you're really seeking or really
00:05:08
desiring. So let's dig a little bit deeper into this difference
00:05:12
between physical cravings and mental cravings, because that
00:05:16
physical craving is your body's cue. It's usually something
00:05:19
that comes along gradually and you might notice it
00:05:23
alongside your hunger signals. It's like maybe an
00:05:26
empty feeling in your stomach having low energy
00:05:29
irritability or brain fog. And your body might
00:05:33
be trying to say, hey, I need fuel, I need something satisfying,
00:05:37
I need energy. While a mental craving, on the
00:05:41
other hand, tends to come on very suddenly. It's like an urge
00:05:45
that pops into your mind out of nowhere. And it's
00:05:48
often triggered by something external. Maybe a
00:05:52
situation where you are feeling super stressed or
00:05:55
anxious or even bo board or you're seeing a
00:05:58
commercial, you're scrolling on Instagram, something like that, where
00:06:02
it just comes out of nowhere and all of a sudden you have this craving
00:06:06
for this very, very specific food. Now the key
00:06:09
here is to not judge either one of these, but to really
00:06:13
pause and explore and ask yourself, where is this coming
00:06:17
from? What am I really needing right now? Because
00:06:20
even those mental cravings have meaning.
00:06:25
So I want you to instead think of these cravings that you're having as
00:06:29
invitations. Invitations to listen more
00:06:32
closely, maybe you're craving chocolate at the end of a long day.
00:06:36
And if you were to slow down long enough, instead of just
00:06:40
giving in, you might realize that it is not about the
00:06:43
chocolate. Instead, it's about wanting a moment of
00:06:47
comfort or recognition after being quote
00:06:50
unquote on all day. Or maybe you're craving
00:06:54
chips or something salty and crunchy, but you skipped lunch, or
00:06:58
you've been drinking coffee instead of water all afternoon and your body is
00:07:02
simply saying, hey, I'm running on empty here. My
00:07:05
fuel is low. Please feed me something satisfying.
00:07:09
Other times, what we're really craving is rest or connection or
00:07:13
joy. And these cravings can even point us to a spiritual
00:07:17
hunger, that deeper longing for. For what only
00:07:20
God can provide. For peace, for
00:07:24
purpose, for fulfillment. Psalm
00:07:27
42 says, as the deer longs for streams of water, so my
00:07:31
soul longs for you. Oh Lord, y'. All. Just like
00:07:35
our bodies crave that nourishment, our souls crave
00:07:38
spiritual fulfillment. And when we're not tending to that,
00:07:42
we can often find ourselves reaching for food or
00:07:46
reaching to scroll our phones or online shopping or.
00:07:50
Or just anything to fill that empty space, to fill that
00:07:53
void. But it is not lasting and it is not truly
00:07:57
satisfying or life giving. So instead of trying
00:08:01
to fight up against your cravings and try to white knuckle your way
00:08:04
through, like cravings are bad. I can't believe that. You
00:08:08
know, I give into this all the time. I want you to get curious
00:08:12
about them. And so here's a simple practice that you can
00:08:16
try this week. I call it Pause, pray and proceed.
00:08:20
So when you find a craving hitting, instead of
00:08:24
immediately reacting, I want you to take a moment to pause
00:08:28
and ask yourself, what's really going on here?
00:08:32
Am I physically, emotionally. That did not make any
00:08:36
sense. My brain. Talk about brain fog. Am I physically
00:08:40
hungry or emotionally drained
00:08:44
or seeking spiritual nourishment? What might
00:08:48
my Body, my mind or my heart be trying to tell me
00:08:53
and then invite God into that moment. It can be something as
00:08:57
simple as praying, something like, lord, help me see what this craving
00:09:00
is pointing to. Help me care for myself in the way that
00:09:04
you designed. And then you can proceed
00:09:09
with grace. And maybe that means that you eat the cookie with
00:09:13
gratitude, not judgment, and move on. Or maybe it
00:09:16
means that you're grabbing a nourishing snack or instead you're taking a
00:09:20
few deep breaths or going for a short walk. I
00:09:24
want you to realize there's no right or wrong way to
00:09:27
handle your cravings. They're just
00:09:31
these clues and they're just helping you build awareness
00:09:35
so you can care for yourself with compassion
00:09:39
and really foster a deeper connection. So
00:09:43
I want you to remember this. Your cravings do not define
00:09:46
your strength or the amount of discipline you have or
00:09:50
really anything about your faith. They're simply signals.
00:09:55
Signals that God has put into our bodies and our minds
00:09:59
to help us build that
00:10:02
self awareness so we know how to take care of ourselves as the gifts
00:10:06
that we are. So these signals are sometimes from your
00:10:10
body, sometimes for your, your emotions, and sometimes from
00:10:14
your soul. So instead of fighting them, instead of beating yourself
00:10:17
up, why don't you lean into listening to them?
00:10:21
Because they might just lead you to a deeper kind of nourishment.
00:10:25
One that's really going to satisfy both body and soul.
00:10:29
And so this week I simply encourage you to just pay attention
00:10:33
when a craving hits. Write it down,
00:10:37
ask what might this be telling me? And
00:10:40
simply invite the Lord into that space. Ask him for that clarity.
00:10:44
Because sometimes our physical hunger points to a deeper spiritual
00:10:48
truth. One that reminds us that we're made for
00:10:51
wholeness, not striving for peace, not
00:10:55
control, for true nourishment that only Christ can
00:10:59
give. All right, friends,
00:11:02
that's all for today. I really hope this help this
00:11:06
episode helps you see your cravings in a new light. I
00:11:09
know this was for sure an area that was
00:11:14
an opportunity for like complete transformation in my life,
00:11:18
to really be able to get curious about my cravings, to see them as clear
00:11:22
clues and then really an opportunity to
00:11:26
better know myself and what I was actually deeply desiring.
00:11:30
And because I did that work, it really allowed me freedom
00:11:34
from these cravings. Like I'm not craving
00:11:38
these specific food cravings anymore or being triggered by
00:11:42
certain foods the way that I used to be. So I hope that you're
00:11:45
starting to see cravings in a new light, not as enemies
00:11:49
to fight, but as a way to teach you to listen
00:11:53
to your body, care for your body and meet its needs.
00:11:57
And so if you want to go even deeper around cravings, since we're doing
00:12:01
this four part series, I've created a free companion
00:12:04
guide and it's called Cravings Decoded your faith led guide
00:12:08
to understanding what your body and soul really need.
00:12:12
It's super simple. It's a really practical workbook. It's kind
00:12:16
of no frills. It has reflection questions,
00:12:19
some journaling prompts, and some prayers to help you connect with your body
00:12:23
and your soul as you begin to navigate your cravings.
00:12:27
So you can find the link to download it in the show Notes for this
00:12:30
episode and next week we're going to get super practical with
00:12:34
talking about five ways that you can better handle your cravings.
00:12:38
I'm going to walk you through how to tell if your craving is physical or
00:12:41
emotional, what to do in that moment that you're experiencing that
00:12:45
craving, and then how to respond with grace instead of guilt.
00:12:49
So until then, take deep breaths,
00:12:53
be gentle with yourself, and remember that in Christ you
00:12:57
are fully known, fully loved, and fully
00:13:01
nourished. Remember beauty held as a seed, beauty
00:13:04
shared is the flower. It is your time to bloom. I hope you have
00:13:08
a beautiful and blessed week and I'll see you right back here next week. Until
00:13:12
then, take care and we'll talk soon. Bye.
