✨ In this episode, you'll discover: 🌿 Why self-care isn't selfish—it's stewardship of the mind, body, and soul God entrusted to you. 🌿 How Christ is the missing "Who" in so many wellness routines—and why everything shifts when you put Him at the center. 🌿 The truth that your dignity comes from being made in the image and likeness of God—not from achievements, perfection, or performance. 🌿 How daily, sustainable habits create rhythms of care that let you serve from abundance instead of burnout.
When we honor our whole selves—body, mind, and soul—we're equipped to bloom into who God created us to be and bear lasting fruit. 🌸

00:00:00
So last week we laid the foundation for our
00:00:03
Self Care series by asking an important question.
00:00:07
What's missing from the way we usually approach health and wellness?
00:00:12
We discover that the answer really isn't a what, but a who.
00:00:16
That for most of us, it's Christ himself that is missing from our health
00:00:20
and wellness and well being efforts. We talked about how
00:00:23
self care in the light of our faith is really about
00:00:27
stewardship. Being able to care for the gift of our bodies, minds and
00:00:30
souls so that we can love God and others more fully.
00:00:34
So in today's episode, we're going to continue to build upon this
00:00:38
foundation as we talk about the pillars or the categories
00:00:42
of Christ Centered Self Care. These are the practices that help us
00:00:46
steward our mind, body and soul every single day. From
00:00:49
physical health to emotional resilience, mental clarity to
00:00:53
spiritual depth, these pillars work together to create
00:00:57
a life for us that's rooted in peace, joy and
00:01:00
purpose. So if you've ever felt stretched
00:01:04
then, or unsure how to really care for yourself without
00:01:08
feeling selfish, then this conversation is all about giving
00:01:12
you a framework that's grounded in faith and one that
00:01:15
equips you to flourish and serve from abundance, not
00:01:19
burnout. Welcome to the

00:02:59
Welcome back to the Nourish to Bloom podcast. So happy to be
00:03:03
spending some time with you here this week. I hope that your week
00:03:07
is off to a really great start. So
00:03:10
last week we began our Christ Centered Self Care series
00:03:14
and we really talked about the foundation by
00:03:18
asking, why does self care really matter to us as Christians?
00:03:21
And today we're going to continue to build upon that foundation by really looking
00:03:25
and exploring what the pillars of Christ Centered Self Care are.
00:03:29
They're really the structure that helps us to live in alignment with God's
00:03:32
design for our mind, body and soul. And it gives us
00:03:36
kind of a direction for, for what stewardship looks like
00:03:40
as well as helping us be intentional with how we
00:03:44
are caring ourselves and
00:03:48
the gifts and talents and resources that
00:03:52
God has gifted us. So just a quick recap from last
00:03:55
week, we really looked at these three kind of guiding truths from the church.
00:03:59
The first one is that we are made in the image and likeness of God.
00:04:03
And because of that we have inherent dignity. It is not performance
00:04:07
based love. It is not based off of the things that we
00:04:11
do, the things that we have that we have dignity and
00:04:15
worth simply because we are children of God and we are made in
00:04:18
his image and likeness. And then the second one was about
00:04:22
how life and health are gifts that God gifted us these
00:04:26
things to, these things to us. And so we're called to be stewards,
00:04:30
to, to manage them, to care for them, not try
00:04:33
to control them or manipulate them. And then the
00:04:37
third kind of guiding principle for our series on Christ Centered Self care
00:04:41
is that true health is holistic, that
00:04:45
it's integrated, that we are an integrated being, body, mind and
00:04:49
soul all working together. And so that's that foundation
00:04:52
we're going to build on this month as we continue with each episode. And today
00:04:56
we're going to explore those pillars of Christ Centered Self Care and how they guide
00:05:00
us in everyday sustainable ways to help us
00:05:04
take really great care of ourselves. And I just kind of want
00:05:07
to lean into stewardship just a little bit more because
00:05:11
it's really, I think we have to kind of rewrite this
00:05:15
narrative about self care that the way it's been
00:05:18
presented to us, it makes it seem selfish, it makes it seem.
00:05:23
Seem unattainable, or that it's only for the select few. And I
00:05:27
really want to Remind you that self care isn't selfish, it's simply
00:05:31
stewardship. And that this is important because scripture reminds
00:05:34
us that the greatest commandments are to love the Lord your God with all your
00:05:38
heart, soul and mind and to love your neighbor as yourself.
00:05:43
And I think it's important that we kind of look at that last part. And
00:05:47
I do this often, I come back to the scripture a lot with, when we
00:05:50
talk about things here on the podcast about taking care of ourselves
00:05:53
and our health and wellness and, and why the scripture is important
00:05:57
because we are usually so, so good and so
00:06:00
focused on being able to care for others and those around
00:06:04
us. But that often comes sometimes at the expense of
00:06:08
caring for ourselves. So I just wanna remind you of that
00:06:11
last part to love your neighbor as
00:06:15
yourself. Cuz if we're neglecting caring for ourselves,
00:06:18
it's going to become harder and harder to really pour into
00:06:22
others with joy. Now yes, of course God's
00:06:26
grace sustains us when we are, are weary or
00:06:29
exhausted. But it's also important to have these daily
00:06:32
rhythms of self care because it really allows us to serve from
00:06:36
above, abundance rather than exhaustion and from
00:06:40
joy rather than resentment or obligation.
00:06:44
So you can think of the old saying, you can't pour from an empty cup.
00:06:47
And stewardship just really means filling that cup
00:06:51
not for our own glory but that we
00:06:55
can then love God and our neighbor more fully. Because we
00:06:59
are overflowing. Because we've, we've
00:07:03
gone to the Lord with our needs and gone to
00:07:07
take care of these needs and having them met. And so our cup is
00:07:11
overflowing. And I think it's important
00:07:15
to just kind of call out that. I really think the way that our culture
00:07:18
and society looks at self care and kind of the way
00:07:22
it's, it's sold to us is that it's just, it's a luxury
00:07:26
that it's something simply to kind of just
00:07:29
make us feel better. It's almost used as a way to kind
00:07:33
of mask a emotions or struggles or problems that we
00:07:37
have. But the reality is, is that when we do this and we just do
00:07:40
these things to make us feel better, it doesn't actually
00:07:44
help us overcome these problems or these emotions
00:07:48
or struggles and it definitely doesn't create true solutions.
00:07:52
It's really kind of this thing about just like propping ourselves
00:07:56
up but it's often short lived. It doesn't give the,
00:08:00
give us lasting or sustainable,
00:08:04
you know, nourishment and care and not to mention the
00:08:07
things that are sold to us as self care these days are usually
00:08:11
Pretty expensive. And so I just want to stop and come back to kind
00:08:15
of this, this basic, of what is the definition of care?
00:08:19
And if you look it up, it's the provision of what is necessary
00:08:23
for the health, welfare, maintenance and protection
00:08:27
of someone or something. So I
00:08:30
don't know about you, but that self care that we're being sold doesn't seem to
00:08:34
focus on these necessities. And so that's why I want
00:08:38
to propose something different. That's what I want to
00:08:41
offer up. When we talk about Christ centered self care, that
00:08:45
it's really focusing on caring, meeting
00:08:49
needs that are necessary for your health, your welfare,
00:08:53
your maintenance and your protection. And it's focused
00:08:57
on you as a whole person, every
00:09:01
part of you, mind, body and soul, to create lasting and
00:09:04
sustainable states of health and well being.
00:09:09
When we're talking about self care, self care here on the podcast, we're talking
00:09:13
about daily self care and that this is essential
00:09:17
and really what it is. It's basically these habits that you
00:09:21
have in place for how you are caring for yourself.
00:09:25
Most days it's about learning to pay
00:09:28
attention to your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual
00:09:32
needs and then being able to get them met.
00:09:36
And this is important because this allows us to build
00:09:40
a firm foundation. This allows us to have
00:09:44
these things in place so that we can
00:09:48
be, be strong of mind, body and soul to
00:09:51
then live out God's calling.
00:09:55
And if we think about this as a firm foundation, we can look at Matthew
00:10:00
7:24 through 27 when Jesus tells us in the parable
00:10:03
that a wise person builds their house on the rock, not
00:10:07
sand. And this is true for
00:10:10
self care for wellness and our health.
00:10:14
We have to have this strong foundation and that's what self care
00:10:18
allows us to have. Because what many of us are doing is that
00:10:22
we're jumping straight to trying to optimize our health
00:10:26
or we're chasing these big goals, we're chasing
00:10:29
perfection, we're chasing quick fixes. But without
00:10:33
the foundation of daily Christ centered self care
00:10:36
habits, those things are all going to crumble. They have
00:10:40
nothing to stand on because nothing has been
00:10:43
firmly built. There's nothing sustainable to, to,
00:10:47
to grow off of, to bloom off of, right? And so
00:10:51
you can kind of think about this self care in the terms of Maslow's
00:10:55
hierarchy of needs. If you look at that, there's those, those
00:10:59
basic needs that are met and then things get
00:11:03
more expansive,
00:11:07
more, I don't know,
00:11:12
like, it's like a higher pursuit, right? We can't focus on those higher
00:11:15
pursuits like our mission our vocation and
00:11:20
long term spiritual growth if our basic needs are
00:11:24
not constantly being met. And self care
00:11:28
is that foundation because it gives us stability so we
00:11:31
can bloom into who God created us to be.
00:11:35
And so we really have kind of these four pillars, these four
00:11:39
categories of self care. And we can look at them
00:11:42
separately and there are different activities that kind of fall under
00:11:46
each one of these pillars separately. But the
00:11:50
reality is, is that they are all integrated. You
00:11:53
can think of it as just as we are many parts, we are all one
00:11:57
body. The same is true for self care, that getting
00:12:01
our daily needs met and each of these pillars helps us
00:12:05
to create a stronger mind, body and soul.
00:12:09
So it's important to also remember that we were each created with a
00:12:13
unique design. It's
00:12:16
unrepeatable. You are unrepeatable. I am unrepeatable. God
00:12:20
created us individually and uniquely.
00:12:24
So it's natural that our self care needs would be unique to each one of
00:12:27
us. So let's take a deeper look at each of these
00:12:31
categories of self care. Our first one being physical well being.
00:12:35
So God created our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit
00:12:39
and caring for them is a form of stewardship.
00:12:43
Physical self care isn't about trying to
00:12:48
change your body, fix it, viewing it as a problem. It's
00:12:52
not about restriction, punishment, or chasing perfection, but
00:12:56
it's really about honoring the gift of your body. So
00:13:00
the way that we can support this is by nourishing your body body intentionally.
00:13:04
So instead of obsessing over what to cut out, what to
00:13:07
eat, try focusing on foods that fuel your energy and bring
00:13:11
satisfaction. And practice mindful
00:13:15
eating, savoring flavors, paying attention to hunger and
00:13:19
fullness cues, and enjoying food without guilt. Because food
00:13:22
is a gift, it's not an enemy.
00:13:26
It's also important to hydrate and rest. These basics matter.
00:13:30
Keeping water nearby, prioritizing your sleep, and
00:13:34
remembering that even Jesus rested. And rest
00:13:39
really strengthens our foundation so you can pour out
00:13:43
into others with joy. It gives your body that
00:13:46
chance to rest, to recharge, to repair and restore.
00:13:51
And then finally, joyful movement. Movement
00:13:54
isn't about punishing yourself for what you ate. It's about
00:13:58
really praising and having gratitude for what
00:14:02
your body can do. So whether it's a walk outside,
00:14:06
dancing in the kitchen, or just stretching before bed,
00:14:09
movement can be an act of gratitude and worship. Being
00:14:13
thankful for what your body has allowed you to do that day and each
00:14:17
and every day. Because we each live in a physical body,
00:14:22
we each only get one body to live in. And unfortunately,
00:14:26
so many of us are at war with our body. So I
00:14:29
challenge you to take care of it. Don't fight
00:14:33
against it. Because taking care of it is so important.
00:14:37
Because it allows us to serve others and it allows us to
00:14:40
literally be the hands and feet of Christ.
00:14:44
Okay, moving on to our second pillar, we have our mental
00:14:48
well being. A clear, focused mind allows
00:14:51
us to better discern God's will and to be able to live with
00:14:55
intention. Our mental self care is really about
00:15:00
creating space for peace and wisdom instead
00:15:03
of being being consumed by busyness or noise.
00:15:07
So the way that we can really promote our mental well being are things like
00:15:11
setting boundaries, knowing that you do not have to do everything
00:15:15
or please everyone. Instead prayerfully decide
00:15:19
what God is telling you matters most and then being
00:15:23
able to let go of the rest. When you have good
00:15:26
boundaries in place, you're free to say yes to what aligns
00:15:30
with God's call for your life.
00:15:34
This also bleeds into
00:15:37
simplifying where you can, y'. All.
00:15:41
We make life so overwhelming and complicated, but it doesn't
00:15:45
have to be that way. Look for ways to streamline
00:15:48
routines, delegate tasks, y'. All.
00:15:52
Sometimes I think we look at kids chores as, I
00:15:56
don't know, like we're mean. I don't know, I don't know if your kids say
00:16:00
that. My kids say, oh, these my friends don't have to do chores. You're so
00:16:03
mean. Because I have to do this and I've really had to work through that
00:16:07
by seeing it as by delegating certain tasks to my kids,
00:16:11
I am teaching them life skills so they can be fully
00:16:14
functioning adults one day. Right? But we have to
00:16:18
simplify where we can so truly trying to find ways to reduce
00:16:22
unnecessary stressors in your life and then practicing
00:16:25
gratitude, writing down things that you are grateful for
00:16:29
each day really helps you shift your perspective from this
00:16:33
scarcity mindset that you don't have enough, you aren't enough
00:16:37
to abundance and reminds you and
00:16:40
shows you all of God's goodness in your life.
00:16:45
Our mental care is really about integrating wisdom into our
00:16:48
daily lives and it's helping us steward our time and
00:16:52
attention toward what truly matters. Okay. Our
00:16:55
third pillar is emotional well being.
00:17:00
I love this one because I think it's often
00:17:03
misinterpreted because God created our emotions as signals,
00:17:07
as cues to help us be alert to
00:17:11
something is going on that we need to address. So caring
00:17:15
for your emotional health means acknowledging your feelings and processing
00:17:18
them in ways that can really move you towards healing
00:17:22
instead of potential harm. Because you're just Turning to
00:17:26
something that's going to mask it and not actually create
00:17:30
a solution. And then you're just building that same
00:17:34
kind of hurtful pattern over and over and over again. So
00:17:37
ways that we can do this is naming your emotions,
00:17:40
identifying what you feel. We have a really
00:17:44
terrible emotional language
00:17:47
vocabulary. We look at it as simple things as
00:17:51
I'm mad, I'm angry, I'm happy, I'm sad.
00:17:55
But there's so many layers to our emotions, there's so many
00:17:59
better words that if we just can expand our
00:18:03
emotional vocabulary, we can really do a better job of
00:18:06
identifying what we are actually feeling and then
00:18:10
being able to find coping
00:18:14
mechanisms that will help us with really being able
00:18:17
to have clarity and
00:18:21
consistency and being able to process those emotions.
00:18:26
Because it's important to find those healthy outlets. Things like journaling,
00:18:30
prayer, creativity, talking with a trusted friend
00:18:33
can all help you process what's on your heart and then
00:18:37
not forgetting to ask for support.
00:18:41
Community is God's design. We were not called to be alone.
00:18:45
We are called to live in community. So we shouldn't
00:18:48
hesitate to lean on family, friends, or our church
00:18:52
when we need encouragement. Our emotional
00:18:55
care is really about the integration of our heart into self
00:18:59
care, reminding us that we are those whole persons,
00:19:03
body, mind and soul, and that it is all integrated
00:19:07
and that we are called to live in relationship with others.
00:19:11
And this brings us to our final pillar, our spiritual well
00:19:15
being, y'. All. This is the cornerstone.
00:19:19
Without tending to our spiritual life, all of the other self care
00:19:22
efforts lose their grounding.
00:19:26
Christ is that firm foundation on which every other pillar
00:19:30
rests. So it's important to make time for prayer and reflection.
00:19:34
Even just a few quiet minutes with scripture or
00:19:38
silence in God's presence has the ability to
00:19:41
completely reorient your day. Putting it on a complete,
00:19:44
completely different trajectory and then also
00:19:48
being able to cultivate a holy headspace,
00:19:52
inviting God into our ordinary moments, being able to
00:19:57
understand his truth. See, when the enemy is
00:20:01
coming at us with lies about our
00:20:04
inadequacy, about what we are doing right.
00:20:08
We have to be able to invite God into our lives and
00:20:12
all of our ordinary moments and everything that we are doing.
00:20:16
Pray without ceasing. And then
00:20:20
living liturgically, being able to anchor your routines to the
00:20:23
rhythms of the church through prayer, through the sacraments,
00:20:27
through small spiritual practices that help keep you rooted in
00:20:31
Christ. Because spiritual care is really our anchor and
00:20:35
our foundation. It's that cornerstone. It reminds us that
00:20:39
all self care flows from our relationship with God,
00:20:43
that He loved us first. We are called to love
00:20:46
him and one of the ways that we show him that love is by taking
00:20:50
care of ourselves. All of these areas of our life
00:20:54
are interconnected and that if we neglect one, it's going
00:20:57
to affect the others. So paying attention to them is not
00:21:01
an indulgence, it's really allowing us to align with
00:21:05
how God designed us and it helps us to be intentional
00:21:08
and focused on what truly is important to living a life of
00:21:12
holiness. Incorporating daily self care
00:21:16
really helps us to be holy as we focus on
00:21:19
being good stewards of our minds, bodies and souls as
00:21:23
well as building that firm foundation to help us stand on as
00:21:27
we continue to live out our unique and individual
00:21:30
callings. I
00:21:34
hope that you have found some little nugget
00:21:38
of hopefulness in today's podcast. Just a little bit of
00:21:41
clarity on what we are talking about when we are looking at Christ centered
00:21:45
self care and how it is not this overwhelming
00:21:49
thing but it's just really taking the time to orient and
00:21:53
align the way that you are living on a daily basis, the things that
00:21:57
you are doing to allow you to be a good steward of
00:22:00
the gift that you are. So next week we're going to take this one step
00:22:04
further and we're going to talk about how we can create a daily self care
00:22:07
plan. This rhythm of care that is
00:22:10
realistic, Christ centered and sustainable.
00:22:14
So I hope you continue to have a beautiful and blessed week. Remember,
00:22:18
beauty held is the seed, beauty shared is the flower. It is your
00:22:22
time to bloom. I'll talk to you soon. Take care.
00:22:25
Bye.
