00:00:04
do I keep falling into the same unhealthy habits?
00:00:08
Or why am I struggling so much to trust God with

my body or my food choices, or

00:02:52
Welcome to Nourish to Bloom, where every day is a sacred
00:02:55
invitation to thrive. Hey there. Welcome to the
00:02:59
Nourish to Bloom podcast, all about nourishing your body,
00:03:03
your soul, and your God given mission. I'm your host,
00:03:07
Kara Trachta, and I'm so happy to be here with you today and
00:03:10
kicking off our summer series all about
00:03:15
spending the summer with the Holy Spirit. And I have to
00:03:19
say that this is something that's kind of been on my heart for a little
00:03:21
bit now. See, I'm a catechist for Catechesis of the
00:03:25
Good shepherd and we always end our our year
00:03:30
with the Pentecost presentation. And it's
00:03:33
one of my absolute favorites because if I am being completely
00:03:37
honest, it wasn't until I went through my formation to be a catechist
00:03:41
that that I really even understood, maybe even a
00:03:45
little bit scratched the surface on what the gifts of the Holy
00:03:48
Spirit actually were and what they meant. And
00:03:52
it's been on my heart to kind of share some of these, these
00:03:56
gifts of the Holy Spirit and how we can actually access
00:04:00
them and utilize them in our everyday lives to help us with
00:04:03
things like healing our relationship with food in our body or,
00:04:08
you know, really being able to navigate the,
00:04:12
the identity crisis that comes as we kind of hit that middle motherhood
00:04:15
transition of life when our kids are going to school and we just
00:04:19
don't know what to do with our time or with ourselves or who we are.
00:04:23
And maybe, you know, how we can utilize these gifts as
00:04:26
we're really trying to uncover and discover and discern
00:04:30
what our God given mission is. And
00:04:34
that's why I thought it'd be so fruitful to spend this
00:04:38
summer with the Holy Spirit. I think it's something
00:04:41
that I get to the summer and it's like, oh, I'm gonna have all this
00:04:44
time to do all these different Bible studies and read all these different
00:04:48
books. And the reality is, is that is usually not the way that it works.
00:04:52
And so I really wanted to take this time, this summer to
00:04:55
go deeper and to explore a little bit more about
00:04:59
these gifts of the Holy Spirit and exactly how we
00:05:02
can access them and utilize them in a practical way.
00:05:06
And so I'm inviting you on this, this journey with me.
00:05:10
And so over the next few weeks, we're going to unpack
00:05:13
each of these gifts and explore how they can really
00:05:17
transform your daily life, especially as
00:05:20
we're women trying to navigate today's culture and society
00:05:24
that often works on distracting us from God's truth.
00:05:28
And so today, we're going to start at the beginning. We're going to start with
00:05:32
Pentecost and the Holy Spirit and really
00:05:36
look at that connection, that beautiful connection between
00:05:39
the gifts of the Holy Spirit, human virtue, and the
00:05:43
fruits of the Spirit. And so, to begin, we're going
00:05:47
to go to the upper room. I invite you to enjoy
00:05:51
me in the upper room. I want you to imagine the
00:05:54
scene, everything that has taken place in that upper room. Jesus
00:05:58
sharing the last supper with his disciples. And now
00:06:02
the disciples are gathered in this upper room
00:06:05
alone, probably confused,
00:06:09
maybe a little bit afraid, unsure of
00:06:13
what's next, what they're supposed to do.
00:06:17
Jesus has ascended and is no longer with them.
00:06:20
But before he left, he gave them a mission, but not
00:06:24
the means. So they're sitting there in the upper room,
00:06:29
and then, like it comes the Holy Spirit. Not
00:06:33
quietly, not subtly, but like wind and fire.
00:06:37
And suddenly everything changes.
00:06:40
It's literally the birth of the church.
00:06:44
Acts 2, verse 4 tells us they were all filled with the Holy Spirit
00:06:47
and began to speak in different tongues as the Spirit enabled them to
00:06:51
proclaim y' all. This was the moment that the church was
00:06:55
born, but it was also the moment ordinary people
00:06:58
were empowered to live extraordinary lives.
00:07:02
Ordinary people became bold witnesses.
00:07:06
The fears that they had became fire and fuel for their
00:07:10
convictions. Their confusion became clarity.
00:07:14
And any human limitations that they may have been struggling
00:07:18
with became divinely empowered.
00:07:23
And that same spirit is available to you and to me
00:07:27
right now. Not just for ministry or
00:07:31
big decisions, but for our daily walk, our daily struggles,
00:07:34
our daily lives, our daily missions.
00:07:38
The Spirit is your divine helper. I mean, like, think about
00:07:42
this. You could even think about as, like, your divine personal assistant. What is the
00:07:46
mark of a great personal assistant? And wouldn't it be great if
00:07:49
every woman had one? But they. They can predict your needs,
00:07:53
right? They're almost two steps ahead of you, knowing exactly how you
00:07:57
operate, exactly what you need, all the ideal conditions that
00:08:00
you need in order to thrive. The cool thing
00:08:04
is it's there, that divine help, the Holy
00:08:08
Spirit, is there to guide us in our thoughts, in
00:08:12
our choices, and the way that we see ourselves
00:08:16
and the world. Now, I don't know about you, but
00:08:19
sometimes I think that the Holy Spirit can feel a little
00:08:23
mysterious, right? We can talk a lot about God
00:08:27
the Father and Jesus the Son, but the Holy Spirit
00:08:31
can kind of leave us in a question mark. How does this all work?
00:08:35
Well, the catechism calls the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete. And
00:08:39
if we kind of dig into the layers of what that means, it's the Holy
00:08:42
Spirit is our advocate, our helper,
00:08:46
our counselor and comforter,
00:08:50
right? We can think of him as our divine assistant, always
00:08:53
present, always ready, offering that guidance and grace
00:08:57
exactly when we need it. It's like that holy
00:09:01
whisper in your heart that says, this is the way, walk in it.
00:09:06
And when it comes to the work we're doing together here,
00:09:09
healing our relationship with food in our body and learning to
00:09:13
live well and reclaim our peace, our purpose
00:09:16
to embody and embrace our God given mission,
00:09:20
you need that helper. We were never meant to
00:09:24
fulfill our missions alone. When Jesus
00:09:27
ascended and in love, he sent us the Holy Spirit
00:09:31
to accompany us, to equip us and empower
00:09:35
us. Isaiah 11:2,
00:09:38
verse 3 outlines these seven gifts that the Holy Spirit brings to
00:09:42
us. The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, a
00:09:46
spirit of wisdom and understanding, counsel and
00:09:49
strength, knowledge and fear of the Lord, and his
00:09:53
delight shall be the fear of the Lord. Y' all, these
00:09:57
aren't just poetic phrases, they're powerful spiritual
00:10:00
tools. The Catechism of the Catholic Church 1830
00:10:04
states that the moral life of Christians is sustained by
00:10:08
the gifts of the Holy Spirit. They are permanent
00:10:11
dispositions which make humans
00:10:14
docile and following the promptings of the Holy Spirit.
00:10:19
So these seven gifts, complete and perfect, the virtues
00:10:23
and virtues are that habitual and firm
00:10:27
disposition to do good. It's the habits and the
00:10:30
attitude and this like state of being that we
00:10:34
embody to do good. Its consistency,
00:10:38
the, the. The human virtues are stable, consistent
00:10:42
dispositions of the intellect and of the will
00:10:45
that govern our actions, our passions, and they
00:10:49
guide our conduct in accordance with reason and faith.
00:10:53
And virtues can grow through education,
00:10:56
deliberate acts and perseverance. And then that
00:10:59
divine grace poured out upon us
00:11:03
purifies and elevates them. So let's talk about this
00:11:07
in a really practical kind of way, because
00:11:10
we've learned through many podcast episodes that so much of how we live,
00:11:14
the habits we formed, the choices we make, even the emotions
00:11:18
that we feel, are all shaped by our thoughts. So
00:11:22
living a Christ centered life starts with these gifts of the Holy
00:11:25
Spirit because when we access them, they
00:11:29
shape our thoughts and our reason and our responses.
00:11:33
They kind of allow us to put on that mind of Christ and offer
00:11:37
that Christ centered perspective so we can choose
00:11:41
what is good, holy and truly fulfilling.
00:11:45
Romans 12:2 tells us, do not be conformed to this
00:11:49
world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.
00:11:53
And that's exactly where the gifts of the spirit come in,
00:11:57
they don't allow us to be conformed to the world. In fact, they kind of
00:12:00
rebel against those worldly views. They help you
00:12:04
renew your mind to think rightly, to
00:12:08
see clearly and respond faithfully. Because
00:12:12
so often we operate out of fear, out of
00:12:15
scarcity or perfectionism, or trying to
00:12:19
grasp onto control in the thoughts that we're thinking. Like,
00:12:23
if I don't eat clean today, I failed or I'll never
00:12:27
feel good in my body, body unless I lose weight, or if
00:12:30
I'm not productive, I'm falling behind, or if
00:12:34
I'm not bringing home a paycheck, I'm not worthy.
00:12:38
The work that I do isn't meaningful because I have nothing to show for
00:12:42
it. Those are those lies.
00:12:46
But the gifts of the Holy Spirit can help you see the bigger
00:12:49
picture, to show you how deeply God
00:12:53
delights in you right now and give you the clarity
00:12:57
to make choices in peace,
00:13:00
not panic. These gifts
00:13:04
first start by changing your mindset. And once
00:13:08
your mindset shifts, your habits and your actions are going
00:13:11
to follow. And you begin to live life from a place of
00:13:15
freedom, not fear, from abundance and
00:13:19
not lack. So here's how I like to picture it. How
00:13:22
the, the gifts of the Holy Spirit and virtues and the fruits of the
00:13:26
Spirit work together and how they're all interconnected.
00:13:30
So your life, your faith and your habits can be seen as like
00:13:34
this garden. And the seed that is planted
00:13:38
is God's life. That's planted in us at baptism.
00:13:41
And it's often referred to as the seed of faith. It
00:13:45
carries the full potential for growth,
00:13:49
holiness and fruitfulness. Just like a
00:13:53
seed contains everything needed to become a flourishing
00:13:56
plant. This seed of faith contains all that
00:14:00
we need to become saints if it's nurtured.
00:14:04
So the gifts of the Holy Spirit are like these, these
00:14:08
inputs that nourish and sustain that garden. They're
00:14:11
like the sunlight, the water, the rich soil, the
00:14:15
fertilizer, everything your spiritual life needs to grow
00:14:19
healthy and strong. And these gifts aren't earned,
00:14:22
they are freely given. But they do
00:14:26
require our cooperation. They do require us to have a
00:14:30
buy in to access them. Right? And so this
00:14:33
is the virtue, it's that consistency, it's the daily tending
00:14:37
of the garden and it's showing up with intention.
00:14:41
It's the pruning, the, the watering, the choosing to align
00:14:45
your heart and mind with God's will over and over.
00:14:49
It's the daily prayer. It's rooting yourself
00:14:53
in God's truth through scripture. And virtue doesn't grow
00:14:57
overnight, but with steady effort
00:15:00
and grace, it becomes that spiritual muscle memory for
00:15:04
us. And then over time,
00:15:08
and sometimes when we least expect it, you begin to see the
00:15:12
fruit. Galatians 5, 22, 23
00:15:16
tells us that the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy,
00:15:20
peace, patience, kindness,
00:15:24
generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and
00:15:28
self control. These are those
00:15:31
outcomes. This is the fruit, that visible transformation
00:15:35
that happens when we live in step with the gifts of the
00:15:39
Holy Spirit. It's not about just doing good things.
00:15:43
It's really about becoming a person so rooted in God that love
00:15:46
and peace are going to naturally flow. I think sometimes we
00:15:50
get so focused on trying to have our behaviors
00:15:54
be these fruits of. Of the Spirit, and we're
00:15:57
so focused on the behavior and changing that behavior
00:16:01
when we need to go back and start with changing that whole disposition. Who we
00:16:05
are being, right? And who we are being is
00:16:09
influenced by those gifts of the Holy Spirit and
00:16:13
the virtues, right?
00:16:16
So to sum it up, at baptism, God plants the seed of
00:16:20
faith in each one of us. The gifts of the Holy Spirit, then nourish
00:16:24
it. Virtue is how we tend to it. And the fruits of the
00:16:27
Spirit, that's what grows when we live with him,
00:16:32
when we live with the Holy Spirit. But, y' all,
00:16:35
here's the catch. Because just like a garden needs a water
00:16:39
source, your soul does, too. And there's a
00:16:43
business coach, her name is Sterling Jacques. She puts it so well.
00:16:46
She says that the Holy Spirit is the water, but we have to
00:16:50
turn on the tap. And that tap, that access,
00:16:54
that thing that we are turning to allow that water
00:16:58
to. To. To quench our thirst, right? To have
00:17:02
access to that water, we have to turn the tap. We have to open that
00:17:05
valve. That tap might look like prayer.
00:17:09
It might look like surrendering or asking for help
00:17:13
or just simply whispering, come, Holy Spirit.
00:17:18
It's choosing to invite him into your thoughts,
00:17:22
into your meals, into your parenting moments,
00:17:26
your body.
