🌞 Feeling overwhelmed by your summer calendar before the season even begins? You're not alone! This week on the Nourished to Bloom podcast, I shared ways to approach summer planning with intention—so it's joyful, not stressful.
Rather than filling up every moment or just winging it, I introduced the Summer Planning Pyramid—a practical framework designed to help parents (and especially moms) prioritize what really matters so the whole family enjoys a meaningful, memorable summer.
Here are 3 key takeaways from the episode for busy parents & caregivers:
✨ Start with Intention: Anchor your summer around a single "vibe" or emotion (like peace, connection, or adventure) and define your top 3 values. This foundation will guide every choice you make.
🔑 Identify Your Essentials: Establish non-negotiables and supportive routines—like consistent mealtimes, a reasonable bedtime, or a quiet day at home each week. These are the scaffolding that hold everything together.
🎉 Sprinkle in the Fun: Save space at the top for the exciting extras—the bucket list ideas, spontaneous trips, and creative activities. Let these moments add delight, instead of pressure.
📣 Ready to try it? I made you a FREE Summer Planning Pyramid worksheet! Just go to summer.karatrochta.com, enter your email, and get instant access. Spend just 15 minutes filling it out, and you'll save yourself so much stress all summer long.

Welcome to Nourish to Bloom, where every day is a sacred
00:03:17
invitation to thrive. Hey there. Welcome
00:03:20
back to the Nourish to Bloom podcast. So happy to be spending time
00:03:24
with you this week. I hope that for all of our mom
00:03:28
listeners out there that you had a wonderful Mother's Day,
00:03:32
that maybe you got some rest that you were looking for,
00:03:35
maybe your kids gave you exactly what you wanted, which was not
00:03:39
fighting. I don't know. That's what sounded great to me. And then my husband
00:03:43
gave me the ultimate gift of not having to make any decisions on Mother's
00:03:47
Day, which was all that I really, really wanted. So I hope you
00:03:51
had a great Mother's Day. I want to take a moment and just
00:03:54
reflect because this past Sunday was not only Mother's Day, but
00:03:58
in the church we celebrated Good Shepherd Sunday. And
00:04:02
the priest in his homily was talking about how some practical
00:04:06
ways that we can, like, look at this imagery of the good shepherd and
00:04:09
better understand its meaning. And one of the ways that he talked about it
00:04:13
was motherhood. How we as moms
00:04:17
embody and bear so much resemblance to the good
00:04:20
shepherd. The way that we really
00:04:24
sacrifice our lives for our children, the way
00:04:27
that we, you know, guide them, the way
00:04:31
the shepherd guides the sheep, the way that they know our
00:04:35
voice, right? Whether that's good or bad, but they know our voice.
00:04:39
But just how the. The spirit and
00:04:43
the imagery of the good shepherd and what that means, how
00:04:46
much of that plays out in our roles as mothers. And I thought that that
00:04:50
was just a really beautiful image to, to rest
00:04:53
in was how much of our role as motherhood is so similar to
00:04:57
that of the good shepherd. And it kind of plays into what we're talking about
00:05:01
this week when we are continuing part two of our
00:05:04
summer series, you know, creating that joy filled summer.
00:05:08
And what I really wanted to focus on this week was some
00:05:11
practicality, some a practical tool to really help
00:05:15
you really start to think about this
00:05:19
summer. Because I know what Happens is we can see things on a
00:05:22
calendar, but it doesn't really give us like this overall like
00:05:26
visual right, because we're flipping back and forth between pages or we have this whole
00:05:29
long list of stuff and it, it just kind of seems like
00:05:33
chaos or there's just all this noise and maybe it's just stuck in our head
00:05:36
and we haven't actually written it down. And so I wanted to create something
00:05:40
for you that was going to help you get everything,
00:05:44
all the noise, all the chaos, all the plans out of your head
00:05:48
and onto a piece of PA to really look at it from
00:05:51
the perspective of am I planning a
00:05:55
summer? Am I shepherding my flock in a way that is
00:05:59
really meaningful, in a way that is intentional and
00:06:03
has purpose and meaning, that is
00:06:06
not only enjoyable for your kids,
00:06:10
but also enjoyable for you. Instead
00:06:14
of feeling like it's just either plan down to
00:06:18
a T and you end up burning out or it's just chaos. This is
00:06:21
just going to really help you find that middle ground. And like I said, I
00:06:25
created a PDF for you for you to
00:06:29
go ahead and use. You have access to it. Visit
00:06:32
summer.caratroxa.com Enter in your email and you'll
00:06:36
get access to an instant download for your
00:06:41
summer planning Pyramid Worksheet is what I am
00:06:44
calling this. So let's go ahead and kind of break down this
00:06:48
pyramid and understand what we are actually building here.
00:06:53
So I want you to imagine a pyramid. You have that base, right?
00:06:56
It's that foundation. It's where we're going to start
00:07:01
and it's that point in which everything else is built on.
00:07:05
And we kind of did some work around this last week and
00:07:08
really talking about what our summer vibe is. But this bottom layer
00:07:12
isn't about to do's or logistics. It' really about
00:07:16
your vibe, the values that you want
00:07:19
to hold on to this summer and your vision for this
00:07:23
summer. So before you are planning anything,
00:07:26
right, I mean, I'm sure you've already signed up for camps and booked that
00:07:30
beach trip because gosh, we got to do this all six months in advance.
00:07:34
But really understanding, I want you to ask yourself, go
00:07:38
back to last week. What do you want this summer to feel like?
00:07:42
What is that one word emotion that you want to describe
00:07:46
this summer for you and for your family. And
00:07:50
like I said, this is something we touched on in the last episode. But it
00:07:53
really does bear repeating because this is your anchor.
00:07:57
It's that foundation. If you skip this step,
00:08:01
everything else becomes noise, everything else just becomes
00:08:05
stuff. It's not intentional and it's not
00:08:09
meaningful. So maybe you want your summer to feel
00:08:12
peaceful or maybe you want to focus on connection.
00:08:16
Maybe you want it to be more playful or slower paced
00:08:20
or adventurous feel. There's no wrong
00:08:24
answer. But the thing is, is that there is value in having
00:08:27
an answer. Because remember, that is your anchor. That is your foundation.
00:08:31
If it's not strong, nothing else is going to hold up. You're going to get
00:08:35
two weeks into summer and you're going to be like, yeah, I just, is it
00:08:39
time for them to go back to school? Right. So let's really focus
00:08:42
on that one word or that vibe that
00:08:46
you want to really embody what this summer is about.
00:08:50
And once you have named that word or that vibe, I want you to write
00:08:54
down kind of your top three values for this summer.
00:08:58
And what I mean by values are things like kind of your, the areas
00:09:01
of focus for you this summer. Maybe it's
00:09:05
family connection, maybe it's rest and rhythm,
00:09:08
outdoor time, faith in worship,
00:09:11
simplicity or flexibility are just some ideas that you can
00:09:15
draw from. But this is really what's shaping everything else. And
00:09:19
this is that compass that you're going to use when you're making decisions.
00:09:23
So throughout the summer, if you're trying to decide between different things, you can come
00:09:26
back to this foundation, you can come back to that one letter
00:09:30
motion that you want to feel, or these top
00:09:34
three values that you have for this summer. And, and say, is
00:09:37
this thing that I'm about to do or I want to do, or this decision
00:09:41
I'm having to make, is that going to help me have this
00:09:44
playful summer or this peaceful summer, or is that going to
00:09:48
promote family connection or simplicity? And then you use
00:09:52
that to help you guide yourself in making
00:09:55
those decisions throughout the summer. So that's why this, this base part
00:09:59
of our pyramid is so important. So now we're going to move
00:10:03
up the pyramid. We're going to move up to that middle layer of the pyramid.
00:10:06
And this is what I'm calling your essentials. So these are the things
00:10:10
that you need to consider this summer. Key dates,
00:10:14
commitments that you already have, maybe routines that you want to keep in
00:10:17
place to keep your household running. And I want you to think of these as
00:10:21
kind of your non negotiables, but not in the
00:10:24
super strict or rigid way, but more like a
00:10:28
scaffolding. Right. It's a support. It's going to kind of keep things,
00:10:33
for lack of better terms, a little bit structured. Right. But what does your
00:10:37
family actually need this summer to function well?
00:10:41
And maybe it's something like a consistent meal time
00:10:44
rhythm, right? That if everybody
00:10:48
is you, like you're going to focus on making sure that everybody is fueled throughout
00:10:52
the day. Or maybe it's, you need to have really some sort
00:10:56
of bedtime structure, bedtime routine. I know
00:11:00
that in the summer my kids do get to stay up a little bit later.
00:11:02
But I also know that if we do not have any sort of bedtime the
00:11:06
next day, nobody can function. So one of the things
00:11:10
that is a non negotiable for us is having somewhat of a reasonable
00:11:14
bedtime when we are home throughout, you know, the week. If we're on
00:11:18
vacation, there's a little more wiggle room. But when everybody gets good quality
00:11:21
sleep, not only my kids, but myself included, our family
00:11:25
just functions better. Or maybe it's something like you
00:11:29
need one quiet home day per week with no
00:11:32
plans, where everybody just kind of gets to do what they want to do. Maybe
00:11:36
it does mean more screen time than normal. Or maybe it's focused on board
00:11:39
games or reading. But maybe you need that one quiet home day per week.
00:11:44
Or maybe it's blocks of time where you aren't in the car
00:11:47
all day, right? Maybe it's weeks where your kids aren't in camp
00:11:51
and you're not having to drop off and pick up every single day.
00:11:55
Or maybe it's that time for rest, like
00:11:59
real rest for you and not just the
00:12:03
kids. One of the things that I try to do in the summer is, you
00:12:06
know, not everybody naps, but maybe we just have an hour of quiet time
00:12:10
that just allows us to kind of reset in the hottest part of the day.
00:12:14
People can read, they can draw, they can, you know,
00:12:18
play puzzles, craft, whatever. But it's just that hour of just quiet time.
00:12:22
And I know that helps me too because then I don't feel like I'm always
00:12:26
like having to be on, if that makes sense. Like
00:12:29
I'm not having to constantly entertain or not having to constantly
00:12:34
break up fights or whatever it is, right? So it's just this time
00:12:38
like this reset period for us. So really thinking about these
00:12:41
essentials as your non negotiables that that structure that's going to give your
00:12:45
summer some support and start blocking these out first
00:12:49
on. Your calendar or your to do list. Or just having them in mind as
00:12:52
you're starting to plan things out. Because this is really going to help you see
00:12:56
where there's margin, where you have some wiggle room and
00:12:59
where there really isn't. And so now we're going
00:13:03
to move on to that top layer of the pyramid, the fun extras, what
00:13:07
I call the sprinkles, right? And this is kind of
00:13:11
that, like, Pinteresty stuff or the things
00:13:15
that we see on Instagram, kind of like these bucket list
00:13:18
moments that everybody promotes, Those spontaneous road
00:13:22
trips or letting your kids have that lemonade stand or
00:13:25
the. The outdoor movie nights, the crafts, just that kind
00:13:29
of stuff. I want to be clear here. Like, these things
00:13:33
do matter. They're the sprinkles. They add that
00:13:36
extra joy. And they probably are some of those
00:13:40
moments that your kids might remember forever, not because of,
00:13:44
like, what it was that you actually did, but how it made them
00:13:47
feel. But remember that the key is that these
00:13:51
belong on the top of the pyramid. They're not on the bottom.
00:13:56
When we have that strong foundation, they're supported.
00:13:59
These sprinkles are supported by your values and your rhythms.
00:14:03
They're supported by that vibe and those essentials.
00:14:07
And when we start to flip that pyramid, where we start with all of
00:14:11
the fun stuff and then just try to squeeze in
00:14:14
everything else, that's what's led us to burnout in the past.
00:14:18
Or we get to August wondering, like, what just happened?
00:14:22
And instead, we need to start by anchoring our summer with
00:14:26
those values and those in essentials so you can really
00:14:30
enjoy the extras guilt free instead of
00:14:34
feeling like you are just burned out two weeks in.
00:14:38
So maybe making a flexible family bucket list is your thing,
00:14:42
but just remember to hold it loosely. Let
00:14:46
this pyramid help to serve you, to help you be the mom you want
00:14:49
to be this summer instead of it stressing you
00:14:53
out. So here's your challenge this week. Go
00:14:57
to summer care.com, get your
00:15:00
summer planning period pyramid, and spend 15 minutes just to sketch
00:15:04
this out. Start with your foundation. What's that summer vibe
00:15:08
and values. Next, go to your essentials, those
00:15:11
supportive rhythms and routines that you need so that
00:15:15
you can bring those extras in. And what are those
00:15:18
extras that are going to bring that delight, not pressure, to
00:15:22
you and your family? You can stick it on the fridge, you can put
00:15:26
it in your planner. You can talk about it with your kids. Like,
00:15:29
let this be something that helps you shape your yeses and your nose.
00:15:34
Heck, maybe even give your kids their own summer planning pyramid,
00:15:37
and you'll walk through it together and see what is really a priority for
00:15:41
them. You know, what is that foundation? What is. What are those
00:15:45
essentials? What is that routine and rhythm that they need? And then what are
00:15:48
the extras that they want? And maybe this. You bring this together and you kind
00:15:52
of have this master plan. Because when your summer
00:15:56
is built this way, you're not chasing that picture
00:15:59
perfect season, but you're creating one.
00:16:03
It's not just a snapshot, right? But you're. It's that you're
00:16:07
creating that feeling and it's rooted and it's restful
00:16:11
and it's real. So if this episode
00:16:14
has given you any sort of fresh perspective for this summer, which I hope
00:16:18
it has, which would you do me a quick favor and share it
00:16:22
with a friend? Let's help more moms ditch this
00:16:26
overwhelm and this comparison and this
00:16:30
picture perfect mentality that we have held for far too long about
00:16:33
summer. And let's work together. Let's help each mom
00:16:37
build a summer that they will actually enjoy and
00:16:41
their kids will love. So
00:16:44
go to summer.karachta.com
00:16:48
Sign up for your summer Planning pyramid and work on building
00:16:52
this summer. I thank you so much for joining me
00:16:56
this week. I hope you continue to have a beautiful and blessed week as we
00:17:00
continue to travel through what we know as
00:17:03
Maysmber and all the things that you are trying to get
00:17:06
through. I promise just take 15 minutes. That's all you need for the summer Plan
00:17:10
Planning pyramid. But I hope you continue to have a great week.
00:17:14
Remember, beauty held is the seed, Beauty shared is the flower.
00:17:17
It's your time to bloom. We'll talk soon. Bye.
