00:00:00
So we are about to embark in our journey of the

00:00:04
season of Lent. A time for us to prepare, a time for

00:00:07
us to grow closer to the Lord so we can more

00:00:11
fully appreciate and celebrate his resurrection

00:00:15
on Easter. But I don't know about you,

00:00:18
sometimes Lent can feel like a time of punishment.

00:00:22
A time where maybe it's filled with, like, guilt and shame

00:00:26
for past sins or things that we're struggling with in the moment.

00:00:30
And so what I want to propose to you is this Lenten

00:00:33
season, let's try something a little bit different. Because I think the majority

00:00:37
of people end up giving up some sort of food for

00:00:41
Lent and thinking that, okay, if I give up this food, this is my Lenten

00:00:45
sacrifice, but what actually is happening is that

00:00:49
diet culture and lint have kind of been entangled together. So,

00:00:53
yes, maybe you are giving up food and that's a sacrifice for

00:00:56
you, but there's maybe those little thoughts underneath that that are like,

00:01:00
okay, maybe this will help me finally lose weight. If I can just not e

00:01:03
this food, then I won't, you know, be tempted and then I can actually

00:01:07
lose the weight that I want to. So lint has actually

00:01:11
become very entangled with diet culture. So this season

00:01:15
I want to propose that you fast from Diet Culture,

00:01:19
that that becomes your Linton sacrifice. And I want to help you

00:01:22
do this. So what we are kicking off on the podcast for the next seven

00:01:26
weeks is our fasting from diet culture, a 40

00:01:30
day Linton challenge. So I can't wait to get started with

00:01:33
you. I will give you more details. We get into the podcast but want to

00:01:37
invite you in if you are looking for something truly

00:01:40
transformative, very different than what you've done in the past for

00:01:44
Lent. But let's give up diet culture. Let's fast from Diet Culture this

Lent so we can truly make space for Jesus and

00:01:52

00:03:28
Bloom, where every day is a sacred invitation to

00:03:32
thrive. Hey there. Welcome back to the

00:03:36
Nourish to Bloom podcast. And I am so excited

00:03:39
to invite you on this journey. This Fasting from

00:03:43
diet culture, a 40 day Linton

00:03:46
challenge. Now, I have to say that I struggled with whether or

00:03:50
not I was actually going to put this challenge together. I had a lot

00:03:54
of thoughts around it, like, could I pull this off? Would anybody

00:03:57
join those kind of things? And how can I make it accessible and easy for

00:04:01
people to do this? And so, real quick, if you want to

00:04:05
sign up for this the 40 day Linton challenge, a Fasting from Diet

00:04:08
Culture challenge, you can visit lint.caretracta.com

00:04:12
and you'll find all the information. But here's what it's

00:04:16
going to look like. So I wanted to make this as easy as possible for

00:04:20
you and honestly, for me. And so what this is going to look like

00:04:23
is every week for the next seven weeks on the podcast, we're going to talk

00:04:27
about a topic that helps us fast from diet Culture, that

00:04:30
really helps us make peace with food this Lenten season. And we'll really get

00:04:34
into the reasons why this is so meaningful and so transformative

00:04:38
as we get through the podcast today and the upcoming weeks.

00:04:42
But the idea is, is that if we can fast from diet culture,

00:04:46
if we can untangle our Lenten sacrifice from diet culture,

00:04:49
from the kind of, like, secretive ways that we're hoping to lose weight

00:04:53
and actually heal our relationship with food, that becomes a sustainable

00:04:57
transformation. That means that every Lent from here on out,

00:05:01
you aren't focused on trying to give up some sort of food that two weeks

00:05:04
later, you feel like you can't, like, you know, give up anymore, and you end

00:05:08
up caving and like your whole Lenten sacrifice went out the window. So what

00:05:11
we're going to do is over the next seven weeks, we are going to dive

00:05:15
into a topic about fasting from diet culture

00:05:19
and topics that will help you heal your relationship with food and body.

00:05:22
This lint, with the idea of framing it in the. In kind

00:05:26
of the three pillars of lint, prayer, fasting, and almsgiving,

00:05:30
and how each of these will help us, you know, make space for

00:05:34
Jesus when we can eliminate those distractions of diet culture, when

00:05:37
we can eliminate the preoccupation with food, and we invite Jesus

00:05:41
into this journey, it really allows us to grow closer to him. And what better

00:05:45
time to do this than. Than the season of Lent? So

00:05:49
the podcast will be where, you know, you get the information

00:05:52
from the different topics. So if that's all you want to do, that's

00:05:56
great. You're still going to get really, really good, practical ways that you

00:05:59
can incorporate this fasting from diet culture into your

00:06:03
Linton season. If you want to go deeper, though, the invitation

00:06:06
is that you listen to the podcast. And on Wednesdays during lint,

00:06:10
we're going to meet together in zoom for a live Q and A session where

00:06:14
you can come and then you can ask me questions about whatever that

00:06:18
intuitive eating topic was or whatever that topic was for the week.

00:06:21
But I'm also going to take you through some

00:06:25
guided exercises to help you go deeper in that particular topic to

00:06:29
promote healing, to invite Jesus into that journey.

00:06:33
We're also going to take some time to reflect on scripture in

00:06:36
a pretty unique way. And then you're going to have just a

00:06:40
weekly challenge, a weekly challenge that you're going to walk away from and you're going

00:06:43
to try to implement for the next seven days. And. And just it. I think

00:06:47
it's going to reveal some of the attachments that you have and really help you

00:06:51
focus in on where you really need to invite Jesus into your

00:06:54
healing journey. So, like I said, if you want to join,

00:06:58
it's lint.caretracted.com and I hope that

00:07:02
you want to join. I hope to see you in there. It's going to be

00:07:05
a lot of fun. It is free. I'm not accepting any

00:07:09
money for this, but what I am accepting is donations. And what I'm going

00:07:13
to do with these donations is give the money to two

00:07:17
local charities in my area. One, the Hill Country Pregnancy center, and the

00:07:20
other one, Hill Country Daily Bread and They focus on

00:07:24
serving women and through pregnancies

00:07:28
and helping through their pregnancy. And then the other one is really

00:07:32
focusing on feeding families in our areas. So, again, I

00:07:35
hope that you join. Okay. So, like I

00:07:39
said, I really struggled as to whether or not I was going to do

00:07:43
this series on Lent because I had some thoughts as to whether or

00:07:47
not that it would be meaningful, whether or not that I

00:07:50
could really talk about fasting in a spiritual way and in a way

00:07:54
that was sound with our faith. And I'll get into why that might

00:07:58
be a struggle for you and why that was a struggle for me, and how

00:08:01
some practical ways that you can actually have a successful

00:08:05
spiritual fast. And then there was just some thoughts

00:08:09
that in the this area, there's. There's some other people who

00:08:13
are really trying to take advantage of the Linton season

00:08:17
and really promote weight loss. And it's just something that really

00:08:21
kind of irks me because, oh,

00:08:25
gosh, guys, if we are focusing on weight loss during

00:08:28
Lent and trying to use our Lenten sacrifice to promote

00:08:32
weight loss, then we've really lost the point of it.

00:08:36
And so, like I said, I struggled as to whether or not I was going

00:08:38
to do this. And what really fueled me to go ahead and commit to

00:08:42
it was this past week I got an email from a

00:08:45
podcast listener who said that she was a new convert

00:08:49
to Catholicism and that she really wanted to know

00:08:53
and, and, and had had some advice on how she

00:08:57
could safely and

00:09:00
healthfully fast, do her Linton

00:09:03
fast, because she had been trying to heal her

00:09:07
relationship with food for so long and

00:09:10
wanted to know, is, is there a way that we can do that, that we

00:09:13
can still focus on healing our relationship with food, but

00:09:17
still, you know, engage in. In fasting

00:09:21
during. In a healthy and safe way? And so this

00:09:24
podcast is dedicated to Emma, that podcast listener

00:09:28
who sent me this question. And thank you for your question

00:09:32
because it really, I guess it motivated me, it inspired me to

00:09:36
really dig into, deep into dig in deep and

00:09:40
create this 40 day Linton challenge called

00:09:43
Fasting from Diet Culture. So I'm excited to be here. I'm excited to

00:09:47
share some things over the next seven weeks about how we

00:09:51
can fast from diet culture during lint and how in doing so, we

00:09:55
can make space for the Lord to come in and

00:09:58
transform us and promote healing in, in our. In our lives.

00:10:02
And I just want to start by saying that in the past, lint

00:10:06
was always a source of mixed emotions for me.

00:10:10
And for many years, I saw Lent really as a

00:10:13
struggle. I saw it as a Punishment, it was

00:10:17
kind of a drudgery. Like lint. I got to give up all these

00:10:20
things, right? And I think a large part of my negativity

00:10:24
towards Lent was really because it was tainted by diet

00:10:27
culture. And maybe that's where you

00:10:31
are now. See, for many people, lint really

00:10:35
marks the beginning of a new diet. And that

00:10:39
was how I took Lent for so many years, was that it was just a

00:10:42
way for me to start a new diet. And I actually did some reading research,

00:10:45
and it shows that the most common thing that people give up for Lent is

00:10:49
chocolate, followed by alcohol, sweets, soda, and

00:10:53
coffee. So a lot of people are giving up

00:10:56
these sweets, maybe these things that they have these attachments to

00:11:00
or they feel like they can't trust themselves around. And

00:11:04
that's really what I did for so long. Like, Lent was this opportunity,

00:11:07
opportunistic time to diet or give up some of those foods that

00:11:11
I deemed bad. And the added bonus of,

00:11:15
like, if I gave these things up was like, okay, if I give them up

00:11:18
during Lent, then I get the added bonus of I can become holier doing

00:11:21
this. And see, I thought that just because it was Lent

00:11:25
and that I was giving this thing up as my Lenten

00:11:29
sacrifice, that it should be easier to give up these foods

00:11:33
and that my desire or my attachment to these foods would just go

00:11:36
away simply because I was making this sacrifice in the name of the

00:11:40
Lord. But the truth was, is that my sacrifice was very

00:11:44
disordered. It was not focused on growing closer to the Lord. It was

00:11:47
not focused on actually giving something up and uniting the struggle

00:11:51
and the suffering to the Lord's sacrifice and suffering on the

00:11:55
cross. It was really, like, motivated

00:11:58
by, like, the desire to lose weight

00:12:02
and now, you know, being on this side of it. And after healing

00:12:05
my relationship with food, my Lenten sacrifice doesn't revolve

00:12:09
around. Doesn't revolve around food anymore, because

00:12:13
I've made peace with those foods that they're no longer that

00:12:16
source of struggle, and they're no longer like, that

00:12:20
source of guilt and shame. And so it's really, by healing my relationship

00:12:24
with food, it's allowed me to actually go much

00:12:27
deeper into my Lenten sacrifice. And I get

00:12:31
that maybe you're not there yet. And so that's why I want to offer up

00:12:35
this opportunity to fast from diet culture as a first step, step

00:12:38
to really be able to see how diet culture has been entangled in your

00:12:42
Lenten struggle and some practical ways that you can start to untangle these

00:12:46
things. So the. The lens that follow Year after year

00:12:50
after year of this, allow you to actually go deeper,

00:12:53
allow you to really connect and grow closer

00:12:57
to the Lord. Because you've removed this, this distraction,

00:13:01
you've removed this kind of

00:13:04
unnecessary source of struggle. But

00:13:08
like, that surface level of like, I'm giving this up because you

00:13:12
really have a disordered relationship with it. Not that you're giving this up because it's

00:13:16
going to allow you to grow closer to the Lord. And I get like, every

00:13:19
generation is met with their temptations, right? And if we go back and

00:13:23
we look at the time of Jesus, like, for sure there were struggles with fasting

00:13:26
at the time of Jesus. And I mean, while

00:13:30
he was able to fast for 40 days in the desert and that was a

00:13:34
really long time. And I can look at it and I can be so

00:13:38
grateful for his sacrifice and I can be so much

00:13:42
more appreciative of the role that spiritual fasting plays in

00:13:45
our faith. But I'm just going to be honest that

00:13:49
Jesus didn't have to fast in a time period that was obsessed

00:13:53
about body image and worshiped thinness, right?

00:13:56
And so I can see how when we are entrenched in diet culture

00:14:00
and our Lent is entangled with so many influences of it, that

00:14:04
it can be really a struggle. Fasting can be a huge

00:14:08
struggle because we're living in this time period that's obsessed with

00:14:11
food, obsessed with dieting, obsessed with health and body image and worship,

00:14:15
sinness. But all kidding aside, like, I can now

00:14:19
appreciate the beauty of that Lenten season and can

00:14:22
more fully embrace fasting than I had in the past.

00:14:26
But I'm not going to lie and say, say that it wasn't challenging to get

00:14:30
to this place. There were a lot of thoughts, a lot of questions, a lot

00:14:34
of struggles that came through that

00:14:37
healing relationship with food. And because it's

00:14:40
almost like I went from one extreme to the other, right? Like,

00:14:44
because I was dieting and trying to lose weight, I

00:14:48
was already restricting certain foods, I was starving

00:14:52
myself. And that

00:14:55
felt like so restrictive and, and it made like it

00:14:59
was like this self imposed

00:15:03
fast, but it was focused on weight loss and it was focused on changing my

00:15:07
body. And there was so much

00:15:10
like underlying hurt and so much frustration with that that when it came

00:15:14
to lint, it was like, how could I possibly give up something even more right?

00:15:18
Or like, I've tried that, this doesn't work. But

00:15:22
you know, in healing my relationship with food, it's like I went from that extreme

00:15:25
of like starving myself to then embracing

00:15:29
that intuitive eating lifestyle where you Know, I was honoring my

00:15:33
hunger every time I'd get that hunger cue. And that can

00:15:36
also make fasting challenging because you're used to honoring your hunger and

00:15:40
honoring your body. And now because you're focused on the spiritual

00:15:44
fast, there's a little bit of like, you kind of have to ignore it and

00:15:47
your body starts to like, okay, what are you doing to me? Right? I thought

00:15:50
we were past this, like, self imposed starvation, right? And

00:15:54
so diet culture really kind of messed up that

00:15:58
point of fasting because it, it promotes restricting, it

00:16:01
promotes that starvation state. And it,

00:16:05
it really tainted any beauty that could come from fasting in

00:16:09
a spiritual way, because it brought out already was bringing on so many

00:16:12
frustrations. And then you get to the point where you have a healed relationship with

00:16:16
food and you enter that struggle because your body's kind of like, wait a, wait

00:16:19
a minute, like, why are you starving me again? Right.

00:16:23
But the other thing that I've experienced on this side of the healing

00:16:27
journey when fasting is that sometimes I don't feel very well while

00:16:31
fasting because my blood sugar isn't as well

00:16:35
regulated on a fasting day. So I can end up with a headache and I

00:16:38
can feel pretty irritable. And, you know, those were also

00:16:42
common things that happened during my, my dieting days. And so my body just

00:16:46
feels kind of out of whack. And so when I was experiencing that, there was

00:16:49
a lot of like, well, what is the purpose of this? Right? Or why

00:16:53
am I doing this if this makes me feel this bad? Right? And

00:16:57
so sometimes fasting can feel

00:17:00
counterintuitive to the intuitive eating lifestyle. But the

00:17:04
key difference that we can embody and that we can start to

00:17:08
embrace when we are in this Lenten season and we're looking at fasting. And

00:17:11
maybe some of the struggles that we have with it is that there's a difference

00:17:15
between dieting and fasting. And that true difference comes

00:17:19
down to the intention behind it. Because the whole point of

00:17:23
our Lenten sacrifice is meant to be this act of penance that

00:17:26
is motivated by this desire to grow closer to God.

00:17:30
And sometimes it's by way of sacrificing food,

00:17:34
where if we look at dieting, dieting and the motivation behind

00:17:38
it is meant to affect one's health or potentially affect one's

00:17:41
health, or to change one's body to conform to a

00:17:45
societal ideal. But we often get these two

00:17:49
things tangled up, especially this time of year. We think,

00:17:53
oh, this time I can give up that food with an

00:17:56
underlying hope of motivation that maybe you'll lose

00:18:00
a couple of pounds, right? That's where that's. That diet culture entanglement comes, is

00:18:04
that you're giving up this food. You see it as a Lenten sacrifice, but the

00:18:08
motivation behind it is weight loss. And this

00:18:11
entanglement between diet culture and fasting can make it difficult to fast in the way

00:18:15
in which we are called to, because it's really difficult to

00:18:19
turn off those deeply ingrained diet culture principles.

00:18:23
And we know that diet culture has infiltrated so many areas of our

00:18:26
lives, including our church. So if you're

00:18:30
using Lent as a means to try to lose weight, then you really

00:18:34
miss the entire point of the Lenten season and the Lenten

00:18:37
sacrifice. And really, like I said, in

00:18:41
my own experiences, fasting from food as my Lenten

00:18:45
sacrifice often propelled me into a deeper

00:18:48
preoccupation with that food and

00:18:52
my body. And, you know, just feeling like that

00:18:55
became what I fixated on, right? The fact that I couldn't have

00:18:59
this food and then telling myself that if I really loved

00:19:03
Jesus that I could do this, but then I wouldn't be able to stick with

00:19:07
it. And I was left beating myself up and ultimately

00:19:10
resulted in kind of this tarnished view of how I thought Christ

00:19:14
must see me, like, telling like, if Kara can't give

00:19:18
this food up for me for 40 days and I was able to

00:19:22
lay down my life for her, then, you know,

00:19:25
she, she's. She's not worthy. Right. It brought on these senses, these

00:19:29
feelings of failure, of not being worthy. And

00:19:33
ultimately this mindset was definitely not healthy

00:19:37
or helpful in any way in building a closer relationship with

00:19:40
the Lord. And so I want to talk about how we

00:19:44
can kind of have like these two kinds of fasting during

00:19:48
Lent and how we can use these different types of

00:19:51
fasting and, and incorporate these Christ

00:19:55
centered intuitive eating principles to really help have a more meaningful

00:19:59
fast and to really help

00:20:02
disentangle diet culture from the

00:20:05
Lenten fast so you don't end up with that kind

00:20:09
of tarnished view of how God must you, like I did, Right?

00:20:13
So you don't end up, you know, wanting to give up this food

00:20:17
for Lent, but yet completely being preoccupied with it for

00:20:21
40 days or, you know, end up giving in and not being

00:20:24
able to stick with your Lenten sacrifice and then beating yourself up for that.

00:20:28
Right. So we can look at the kind of two kinds of

00:20:31
fasting of the Lenten sacrifice and

00:20:35
how we can use those to really help us grow in the areas of

00:20:38
prayer, fasting and alms giving, and how that

00:20:42
makes more space for Jesus to come in and really

00:20:46
promote a meaningful transformation during this season.

00:20:49
So the first is fasting on Ash Wednesday and

00:20:53
Good Friday. And fasting on these two days

00:20:57
are. Are required by the code of canon law. And what

00:21:01
fasting means on these two days is that you can eat one larger meal

00:21:05
and two smaller meals per day. It's not saying that you can't have any

00:21:08
food at all, but it's one larger meal and two smaller meals per

00:21:12
day. And trust me, I know that fasting can be

00:21:15
quite challenging. And maybe by the end of the day, you'll

00:21:19
be like wanting to chew your arm off. And I get that. Especially if this

00:21:23
is not something that you are used to or if you're in that. That

00:21:28
period where you are trying to heal your relationship with food, or you

00:21:32
might find that in the. On these days and if you are fasting that it

00:21:36
seems like all you can think about all day long is food and how hungry

00:21:39
you are. And like I've told you, in the early days of my healing

00:21:43
journey, I really found spiritual fasting to be very difficult. And there were

00:21:46
a few years in there, especially in the beginning

00:21:50
part of my healing journey, that the best

00:21:54
and most fruitful fast for me was actually not

00:21:57
fasting on these days from food because

00:22:01
my mind and my body was not fully healed.

00:22:04
And what was happening, because I had this distorted

00:22:08
relationship with food and I had this distorted relationship with fasting,

00:22:12
it took this beautiful practice of spiritual fasting, and it

00:22:16
distorted it, and it led me back down an unhealthy path.

00:22:20
And so it's important to know that there are fasting exemptions for those

00:22:24
who cannot or should not fast for health reasons, reasons like someone who is

00:22:27
diagnosed with diabetes, that fasting would actually put them in

00:22:31
a kind of more dangerous position than,

00:22:35
you know, potentially trying to fast from something else other than food on those

00:22:38
days. Or it's also an exemption for someone who's

00:22:42
recovering from an eating disorder. So if you are in

00:22:46
this place where you are on this healing your relationship with food journey,

00:22:50
if you're wondering if you should exempt yourself from fasting because you

00:22:54
are healing from a disordered relationship with food, I think it's really

00:22:57
important to first pray about it. Talk to God about this,

00:23:01
tell him about the. The struggle that you're having with it, and let him really

00:23:04
speak to you. Because you and God know

00:23:08
if you should be truly exempt

00:23:12
or that, or if you're just trying to get out of doing something

00:23:16
hard or uncomfortable. Right? And second, you can ask

00:23:19
yourself that if you are fasting, where would this fast lead

00:23:23
you? Right? If you are, if you still have this disordered

00:23:27
relationship with food that you're trying to overcome, are you mentally and

00:23:30
physically healed enough to engage in this fasting that it's not going to

00:23:34
have any setback of healing that you've already done? Or

00:23:38
is it. Or if you fast and you're not in that place of being

00:23:41
mentally and physically healed, is that going to lead you to this

00:23:45
bigger preoccupation of food? Will it actually engage in

00:23:49
more, you know, harmful habits? Then

00:23:52
if you were to say, okay, Lord, this year, I, I

00:23:56
do, I do want to fast. I do want to unite myself to you, but

00:24:00
I think fasting from food is actually going to be more

00:24:04
prohibitive. You know, it's going to lead me to a deeper preoccupation with

00:24:07
this, and maybe you fast from something else

00:24:11
instead. And I'll give you some ideas later in the podcast, but,

00:24:17
you know, you finally have to look at this from a place of compassion for

00:24:20
yourself, right? If you are in the midst of healing, it may not be

00:24:24
appropriate for you to fast this year, but that doesn't

00:24:28
mean that you won't be able to in the years to come, right?

00:24:32
I think we look at this from kind of a punishment that if we don't

00:24:35
do this and there's a difference, right? Like I said, there's a

00:24:39
difference in being truly exempt of understanding that if you did this, it would actually

00:24:43
cause you more harm than, than allowing you to grow closer to the

00:24:46
Lord. Or are you just doing this to try to get out of doing something

00:24:49
hard or uncomfortable or that you don't really want to do, right? I think you

00:24:53
can figure those answers out and prayerfully figure those

00:24:56
answers out. Right? But if you're, if you're not able to fast this year because

00:25:00
of this disordered relationship with food and you're working on

00:25:04
healing and healing it, that doesn't mean that you won't be able to fast in

00:25:07
years to come. Right? I'm at the point now where I can

00:25:11
fully engage in a spiritual fasting on these days without

00:25:15
it leading to, you know, me falling back into

00:25:19
disordered eating habits. But it took some time to get there.

00:25:22
And in those years where I couldn't fast from food, it didn't mean

00:25:26
I didn't make a sacrifice, but I was just intentional

00:25:30
and, and chose an alternative method of fasting for those

00:25:34
days, or I committed to doing something more or extra

00:25:37
on that day. You know, maybe going to a holy hour or spending

00:25:41
extended time with Scripture, something that really was

00:25:45
concrete and united me to the Lord, or I sacrificed something that

00:25:48
was really more of. More of that sacrifice

00:25:52
or would really allow me to unite that struggle to

00:25:56
him, but without leading to, you know, harmful habits or harmful

00:26:00
setback. So on the other side, if

00:26:03
you will be fasting this year, but you still find yourself

00:26:07
struggling with it, especially if you are at the point where you have

00:26:11
a more healed relationship with food. And there's that, you know, like.

00:26:15
Like I said, where you're more attuned with your body, and so you have these

00:26:19
hunger cues that you're. You are

00:26:22
honoring. And fasting is like, oh, my gosh, I'm hungry.

00:26:26
Or, you know, I feel this hunger cue and I can't honor it. I want

00:26:29
to give you some things to think about to help you prepare for a fast

00:26:32
this Lenten season. Again, first, remember the

00:26:36
reason why you are fasting. I get that it's

00:26:39
hard, and I get that it can be uncomfortable, but

00:26:43
it was pretty hard and uncomfortable for Jesus to die on that cross

00:26:47
for our salvation, right? This is a couple

00:26:51
of days out of the year. It's not saying that you have to fast

00:26:56
every other Friday, or it's not saying that you have to fast at any other

00:27:00
time during the year, especially if you have found that this intuitive

00:27:03
eating relationship really allows you that. That place of

00:27:07
healing, that you're not preoccupied with food anymore. But just remember

00:27:11
our days of fasting during Lent. It's just a small suffering,

00:27:14
and it's. The point of it is to unite our suffering with his

00:27:18
suffering. So if you're sitting there and you're experiencing a hunger cue and you

00:27:22
can't eat, that's the perfect opportunity, right? Your body's physically given that,

00:27:25
giving you that cue that you can say, lord, I unite this struggle

00:27:29
to your suffering, or, lord, I unite this feeling of being uncomfortable

00:27:33
because I'm hungry with your suffering, to say, lord,

00:27:37
I want to be united with you to thank him for what he did

00:27:40
for you. So when it seems difficult that in

00:27:44
that exact moment, when that's the perfect opportunity to turn

00:27:48
to the Lord and offer that suffering to him, you can picture

00:27:51
yourself at the foot of the cross being with him on the day of

00:27:55
his sacrifice and offering that struggle up to him,

00:27:59
you can also offer it up with an intention. For someone else who

00:28:03
may be struggling with something like an addiction or

00:28:07
a medical diagnosis that you know is suffering and they are

00:28:11
struggling, you can offer your. Your fast up

00:28:14
in their name. And then I think there's this. This prayer that I found that

00:28:18
you can also say, lord Jesus, in the midst of this suffering, I turn to

00:28:22
you and choose to unite my pain with yours on the cross. May my

00:28:26
trials, however small they may seem, become part of your

00:28:29
redemptive sacrifice, offering hope and healing to

00:28:33
others. Strengthen me to carry this cross with grace,

00:28:36
knowing that through you, my suffering can be transformed into love

00:28:40
and bring glory to God. Amen.

00:28:44
Okay, I think the second thing is remembering that fasting

00:28:48
does not mean that you can't eat at all during that day.

00:28:52
And it doesn't mean that what you eat can't be

00:28:55
nutritionally beneficial or filling for when you do

00:28:59
eat. Now, it is traditional to try to eat more

00:29:02
simple meals on fasting days and on Fridays when you're abstaining

00:29:06
from eating meat. But even those simple meals can include

00:29:10
nutrients that can help fuel your body and promote

00:29:13
fullness so you're not feeling hungry all day long.

00:29:18
So even though you're eating less throughout the day, you can be mindful

00:29:22
and intentional about what you are eating to still

00:29:25
promote your body being fueled, that

00:29:29
maybe you can lessen any potential side effects that you felt from

00:29:33
fasting in the past, like headaches or low blood sugar.

00:29:36
And so some nutrients that you can focus on are protein

00:29:40
and fiber, as these nutrients have longer staying

00:29:44
power in your body because they take longer to digest.

00:29:47
So some. Some good sources of protein that are

00:29:51
allowed during Lent are all types of beans and legumes,

00:29:55
chickpeas, quinoa, eggs, and some

00:29:58
dairy products. You can also look for grain products

00:30:02
like pasta and bread that have protein added to them.

00:30:06
And then when we're trying to incorporate good sources of fiber, that again,

00:30:10
includes things like beans, whole grains, fruits, and

00:30:13
vegetables. So having a combination of these

00:30:17
foods can help you be able to have a successful

00:30:20
spiritual fast because it will allow you to really focus

00:30:24
on making room for the Lord through prayer instead of

00:30:28
focusing on how hungry you are during the day. Right. So setting

00:30:32
yourself up that for that successful spiritual fast so then you're

00:30:35
not preoccupied by how hungry you are or what you can't eat during that

00:30:39
day. Um, okay. So the other type of fasting during is

00:30:43
what we typically refer to as like giving something up. Right. So

00:30:47
it's referring to doing something less than usual to make room

00:30:50
and make time for prayer, penance, alms, giving, and

00:30:54
spiritual growth. And so it's very common for people

00:30:58
to give up food for Lent. Like I said, chocolate and sweets are

00:31:02
like the number one thing that most people give up. But I'm willing

00:31:05
to bet that the majority of these people are giving this thing up because they

00:31:09
view these foods as bad foods or something they can't trust

00:31:12
themselves around or something that they shouldn't be eating. So they

00:31:16
don't feel like they can trust themselves around this food. So they see it as

00:31:20
what better solution to gain trust and feel more in control

00:31:24
than like, by giving up this food for Lent.

00:31:28
But if you're like me and you've tried this in the past, you've

00:31:31
likely been unsuccessful in being able to stick with it. Or if you

00:31:35
have, if you have been able to give up this food for

00:31:39
those 40 days, my question for you is, is how

00:31:43
did your behavior change towards these foods post Lent?

00:31:47
Did it really cause a transformation for you? Did it really

00:31:51
allow you to not desire that food

00:31:54
anymore? Because what I find is that most people end up falling

00:31:58
right back into the same habit around these foods after Lent

00:32:02
is over. And this is how we can see that prime example

00:32:06
of diet culture being entangled in being

00:32:09
entangled with our faith, right? Lent is meant to be

00:32:13
transformative, a process of change in heart

00:32:17
and mind that happens over time of becoming more like Jesus.

00:32:21
So tell me, is what you are giving up for Lent really going to

00:32:25
lead to that kind of transformation? Especially if you

00:32:29
just end up going right back to doing what you were doing before Lent. And

00:32:32
we see that with people who are giving up food is that they want to

00:32:36
give it up for Lent. And then they tell themselves like, well, I'll just have

00:32:39
it after these 40 days. But because they're preoccupied

00:32:43
with ends up being something that becomes their

00:32:47
focus of how they can't have this or how they can't wait to have it.

00:32:50
And they're really missing the point of Lent. They're not being able

00:32:54
to focus and dedicate that time to prayer or to growing

00:32:57
closer with the Lord. And they end up just falling right back

00:33:01
into this habit. And so by next year they're like, well, I gotta give this

00:33:05
up again, right? And so what you choose

00:33:08
to give up is 100% between you and God.

00:33:12
But I really challenge you to ask yourself how you will be different in

00:33:16
40 days. Will there be a true transformation

00:33:20
and conversion of heart in with what you are giving

00:33:23
up? And then ask yourself, what are your intentions and

00:33:27
your reasons for what you are giving up? Is

00:33:31
it because you really are focused on

00:33:34
growing closer to the Lord? Are you really are focused on that if

00:33:38
you give this thing up, it's it will allow you more time for

00:33:41
prayer and developing that relationship?

00:33:45
Or are you giving it up because you Hope that you won't

00:33:49
want this food anymore or that you will lose some

00:33:52
weight. I'll say it again. If you are giving it up in hopes of

00:33:56
losing weight, you are missing the point of Lent. And I

00:34:00
say this with all the love in my heart because I was there. I did

00:34:03
it. I had that disordered entanglement of diet culture and

00:34:06
Lent. And I can see now, looking back how.

00:34:10
Because I was so focused on that and I had that motivation, that underlining

00:34:13
motivation of, oh, maybe this will help me lose weight. I

00:34:17
completely missed what I was really supposed to be focused on during

00:34:21
Lent because it's about giving

00:34:24
up something to allow us to make more room for Jesus.

00:34:28
And so this Lent, I really want to invite you to focus

00:34:32
on fasting beyond food, being able

00:34:36
to clear out that baggage of diet culture, to create

00:34:39
permanent and lasting space for Jesus in your life,

00:34:43
mentally, emotionally, physically, and, of course, spiritually.

00:34:47
So I really want you to think about, and I invite you to

00:34:51
try fasting from diet culture instead this Lent. And

00:34:55
I want to give you just five ways, five different

00:34:58
alternatives that you can try that would allow you to

00:35:02
fast from diet culture for Lent instead of fasting from food

00:35:06
and then falling right back into those behaviors.

00:35:09
So the first thing that you could give up is fasting from the scale.

00:35:14
Why is this the. Why is the scale a problem? Why is this something

00:35:17
worthy of giving up? Well, the scale can quickly become an

00:35:21
idol in our lives, something that we turn to for validation, self worth,

00:35:25
or even mood control. Like, stepping on the scale each morning can

00:35:28
dictate whether you feel good or bad about yourself. It can

00:35:32
set the tone for your day. And so Lent is the perfect time to

00:35:36
break free from this attachment, because your worth is not

00:35:40
measured in pounds. Psalm 139, verse

00:35:43
14 reminds us that God sees you as his beloved

00:35:47
child who is fearfully and wonderfully made.

00:35:51
And so if you're feeling the urge to weigh

00:35:55
yourself, try replacing the ritual with a moment

00:35:58
of prayer. If you find yourself in the morning and you really wanna step on

00:36:02
that scale, say, lord, help me to see myself through your eyes

00:36:05
today. You can even, like, put a sticky note

00:36:09
from. With. With a Bible verse over the scale as a reminder

00:36:13
to say, okay, I'm not gonna turn to this. This is not going to dictate

00:36:16
my worth. This is not going to dictate how my day goes. And with that

00:36:19
physical reminder there, you can take those moments that you would be

00:36:23
stepping on the scale, those moments that you would be anticipating, oh, is this gonna

00:36:27
be good? Or is this Gonna be bad. You can take the moments preceding whatever

00:36:30
the scale would have told you, and you can dedicate that time to prayer, to

00:36:34
reading scripture, to growing closer to the Lord.

00:36:37
Okay? The second thing that you can

00:36:41
fast from to give up diet culture from Lent this year is

00:36:45
wearing makeup. So

00:36:49
again, diet culture is really ingrained with that whole beauty

00:36:52
industry and those societal pressures, pressures and standards. And so many

00:36:56
of us use makeup to hide perceived flaws

00:37:00
or to try to fit into those societal beauty

00:37:03
standards. And diet culture and beauty culture often go hand in

00:37:07
hand because they convince us that we must look a certain way in order

00:37:11
to be accepted. So the invitation is to try

00:37:14
going makeup free. Or if you can't do that, at least

00:37:18
really simplifying your routine, right? Making it simple.

00:37:22
Maybe you just put on a tinted moisturizer instead of foundation, or

00:37:26
maybe you forego the mascara or the false eyelashes,

00:37:30
right? Just try going makeup free as a way of

00:37:33
embracing the body that God has given you. Because that

00:37:37
true beauty is not about perfection. It's about

00:37:40
reflecting Christ's love about letting

00:37:43
him see you or letting yourself see yourself.

00:37:47
Letting yourself see you as God sees you, that you are beautiful

00:37:51
and perfect because you are his creation.

00:37:54
So each morning, instead of focusing on covering

00:37:58
up your perceived flaws, you can speak a blessing over

00:38:01
yourself. I am made in God's image or my

00:38:05
beauty is found in Christ. You can also reflect on

00:38:09
First Peter, chapter three, verses three and four, which reminds us that

00:38:12
inner beauty is what truly lasts. Are you

00:38:16
more focused on that outward

00:38:20
beauty, the way you physically look, or are you more focused on that inner

00:38:24
beauty and letting that inner beauty actually shine through

00:38:28
and allowing that inner beauty to lead others to Christ?

00:38:33
Okay? The third thing that you can fast from is

00:38:36
from buying clothes. Because in a culture

00:38:40
that constantly tells us to dress for our body type or fix our

00:38:44
appearance, shopping can become more about seeking that

00:38:47
external validation than true self expression. We can fall into

00:38:51
this trap of thinking of like, I'll feel confident when I lose weight and buy

00:38:55
the quote unquote, right clothes. So this lent, you

00:38:59
can consider fasting from shopping from new clothes as an act

00:39:03
of contentment, being content with what you have

00:39:06
and gratitude for the things that you have. So instead of focusing on

00:39:10
what you wish you could wear, it allows you to shift your focus on

00:39:14
loving and accepting the body that you have today and

00:39:18
caring for the body that you have today.

00:39:21
A lot of us want to try to, to, to like, we have this, this

00:39:25
thought of like, we want to care for our body, how we think we should

00:39:28
look or if we lose weight, then I will care for my body in this

00:39:32
way. But we have to care for our here and now body. And part of

00:39:35
that is dressing for our here and now body in a way that we

00:39:39
are accepting our body. And when we're constantly trying to buy new

00:39:43
clothes to seek that validation or

00:39:46
to dress the right way in hopes of feeling confident, we aren't

00:39:50
relying on Christ's love to be our source

00:39:53
of confidence. And so when you feel the urge to buy something new this

00:39:57
lent, pause and ask, am I trying to fix something God never

00:40:01
asked me to fix? So instead of shopping,

00:40:05
you can, you know, go through the clothing that you have and

00:40:08
maybe donate clothes that are sizes too small,

00:40:12
the things that maybe you've held onto in hopes of being able to wear again.

00:40:16
But you know that the reality is, is that that's not

00:40:20
likely going to happen. Maybe you can donate those

00:40:23
clothing to a local shelter or to someone else in need. Or maybe

00:40:27
you can try to, you know, sell them on Poshmark or ebay

00:40:31
or Facebook marketplace and then use that money to donate

00:40:35
to a charity of your your of your choice.

00:40:38
Okay. The fourth thing that you can fast from this Lenten season instead of food

00:40:42
is excessive exercise. So we know that exercise

00:40:46
and movement, it's a good thing. But in that entanglement of diet

00:40:49
culture, it often becomes a form of punishment or a

00:40:53
form of trying to change your body rather than joyful movement.

00:40:57
So many people over exercise to compensate for eating or to change

00:41:01
their body shape or meet unrealistic expectations. So

00:41:05
this lent you can shift your focus from exercise as a way to shrink your

00:41:08
body to a way of joyful movement as a way to honor and

00:41:12
care for your body. And maybe that looks like exploring

00:41:16
more gentle forms of movement instead of punishing yourself through

00:41:19
grueling workouts and finding that in being

00:41:23
able to maybe rest your body more or exploring

00:41:27
those gentler forms of movement that you actually feel

00:41:31
more energized, more life giving, more

00:41:35
capable because you aren't focused on punishing your body.

00:41:39
And so before, before exercise or movement, ask

00:41:42
yourself, am I moving out of joy or obligation?

00:41:46
Maybe this is a time to try walking, stretching or dancing.

00:41:50
Ways to celebrate what your body can do rather than trying to control

00:41:54
it. Or maybe you make room for movement as

00:41:58
ways to to get outside or engaging in,

00:42:02
you know, a fun sport with your kids or

00:42:06
planting your garden. Those kind of movements

00:42:10
instead of focusing on exercise as a way to try to control the way

00:42:14
your body looks or to promote weight loss so you can

00:42:17
meditate on First Corinthians 6, 1920, remembering that

00:42:21
your body is a temple to be cherished, not

00:42:24
punished. And then my last suggestion for fasting

00:42:28
this lint is fasting from social media. See, social

00:42:32
media feeds are full of before and after photos, weight

00:42:35
loss trends and unrealistic body standards and beauty standards

00:42:39
that fuel that comparison and dissatisfaction and

00:42:43
comparison. And one is one of the biggest tools diet culture uses to make us

00:42:47
feel unworthy. So the invitation this line is to

00:42:50
consider fasting from social media. And if you feel like

00:42:54
you can't do that because of certain, you know, things like

00:42:58
a business or whatnot, at least try

00:43:02
curating your feed to remove toxic messages

00:43:05
about body image. Try following people who are

00:43:08
inspirational and uplifting, not those that try to fuel

00:43:12
comparison or lead you to feeling like you're having to compare

00:43:16
your body with someone else's. So use the time or you

00:43:20
that you would normally scroll to focus on prayer, scripture

00:43:24
or activities that nourish your soul. So try

00:43:27
taking a social media break. This lint at least one day a

00:43:31
week or at the very least unfollow those accounts that trigger

00:43:35
comparison and instead again follow this uplifting content that

00:43:38
reflects God's truth about who you are beyond your

00:43:42
appearance. Philippians 4:8 reminds us to focus on what is

00:43:45
good, pure and lovely. And you can apply that to what you're

00:43:49
consuming online. So

00:43:53
one other thing that I'm going to share that I think can help promote a

00:43:56
successful fast this lint is to make sure that you plan

00:44:00
for what you are turning to instead of what you are giving up.

00:44:04
If we just say we're going to give this up and we don't really know

00:44:07
what we're going to do in this time, or if we're not intentional about if

00:44:10
I'm giving this up, how am I going to invite the Lord into this space

00:44:14
in this time? Again, we're missing the point.

00:44:17
So maybe you need to make a plan for what it is that you're turning

00:44:20
to. Is it scripture? Is it a devotional? Is it Christian music?

00:44:24
Whatever it is, it should be helping you on the way to that

00:44:27
transformation. And really sometimes

00:44:31
I have found during Lent that a more fruitful approach may

00:44:35
not to be get may not be actually giving something up,

00:44:39
but instead of adding something more, being

00:44:43
very intentional about how I want to invite

00:44:46
the Lord more into my life during this season. So sometimes

00:44:50
it's been attending daily Mass one extra day a week, or going to

00:44:54
adoration or saying a decade of the rosary each night, or

00:44:58
joining a linton Bible Study these like extras

00:45:01
are intentional ways to commit to making space for Jesus.

00:45:06
Giving up something, but filling that void with something that's

00:45:09
meaningless or worldly doesn't help you grow closer to the

00:45:13
Lord this Lenten season. It's really becomes just trading one

00:45:17
vice for another. But when you're intentional of how you will fill

00:45:20
that time, or you focus on what thing you can

00:45:24
add, it's allowing you to intentionally take a step closer

00:45:28
to him and inviting him into that transformation.

00:45:32
Remember, Lent is a journey of renewal, not of

00:45:36
restriction. It's an opportunity to deepen our trust in God's provision

00:45:40
and his abundance, not just spiritually, but physically as

00:45:43
well. And so my prayer for you this season is that you experience

00:45:47
true freedom. And maybe that starts with freedom from

00:45:51
food guilt, freedom from diet culture, and

00:45:55
just being able to rest and embrace and know the deep

00:45:58
abiding freedom that comes from Christ alone.

00:46:03
So I'm gonna invite you that if you are longing

00:46:06
for something more meaningful this Lent than just giving up chocolate or

00:46:10
carbs out of fear or out of a desire to lose weight,

00:46:14
I invite you to join me for my Fasting from diet culture, a

00:46:18
40 day Lenten challenge where we'll explore

00:46:21
how Christ centered intuitive eating framed in the

00:46:25
lens of prayer, fasting and alms gilding can really help you grow

00:46:29
in faith this Lenten season. So what we will do in

00:46:32
this challenge is eliminate those entanglements of diet culture from Lent so

00:46:36
you can experience that true transformation of drawing closer to Christ.

00:46:40
So what if this Lent you fasted from guilt around food and eating

00:46:44
eating or that constant pressure to change your body or the belief that your

00:46:48
worth is tied to what's on your plate or the size of your genes, but

00:46:51
instead you were able to feast on God's abundant

00:46:55
grace or the joy of eating without shame, or

00:46:59
the truth that your body is fearfully and wonderfully made.

00:47:02
So I invite you to join me on this Fasting from Diet Culture Lenten
