00:00:00
Have you ever fallen into the trap of that all or nothing

00:00:03
mindset? Like, if you can't do something perfectly, then

00:00:07
what's the point of even trying? Well, in today's

00:00:10

healthier and more compassionate approach, one that I like to

00:00:17

grace, learn to show up consistently even on the

00:02:28

00:02:31
Welcome back to the Nourish to Bloom podcast. So

00:02:35
happy to be here with you today. I hope you are off to

00:02:39
a good start for your week eight. And I kind of want to open

00:02:43
today's episode, which was really kind of the catalyst for

00:02:46
today's episode with something that I heard on the radio in

00:02:50
the last couple of weeks. They were interviewing this singer and

00:02:54
the conversation was really turning to like, his mindset

00:02:58
and his work ethic. And specifically

00:03:02
in this segment about, you know, his work ethic

00:03:05
when it comes to working out and exercising. And so

00:03:09
some of the advice that he shared really resonated with me.

00:03:13
Um, he talked about, you know, starting small and celebrating

00:03:17
just the tiniest milestones. For example, he,

00:03:20
he was talking about when a lot of times when people

00:03:24
start, you know, exercise routine, they, they put it in their head that,

00:03:28
like, I gotta go run three miles, right? And the day before

00:03:32
they weren't even running, right? And so instead of feeling like it's gotta be this

00:03:35
three mile jog on day one, he was really talking about,

00:03:39
like, just start with a 10 minute walk and use that as

00:03:42
that first step towards building a running habit. And I

00:03:46
loved it because it was just such that great reminder that

00:03:49
oftentimes that thing that we think is just

00:03:53
too silly to even matter is often really that

00:03:57
first step that we have to take towards building something

00:04:00
meaningful. Meaningful or towards reaching that goal.

00:04:04
Like we, it's funny because so much of our life

00:04:08
is all about we want to run before we've even learned how to walk,

00:04:12
right? And I talk about this a lot with clients and

00:04:15
intuitive eating and setting other goals. But it's like these little

00:04:19
wins, right? Just these small steps, these little wins that you're getting every

00:04:23
single day are really what's moving you towards that progress

00:04:27
to the bigger goal. And these little wins really help show

00:04:31
you how the Lord is moving in your life and

00:04:34
how these little, these little progress steps are

00:04:38
filled with so much gratitude because you are making

00:04:41
progress. And I just thought it was a really, really good

00:04:45
perspective. But then on the other hand, some of the things

00:04:49
that he was saying just didn't quite sit very well with me.

00:04:53
Things like every setback is a comeback or

00:04:57
this, you know, push through even when you don't feel like it because you're just

00:05:00
going to end up regretting it later. And it just, it had

00:05:04
this like hustle all the time vibe that was coming

00:05:07
across. And well, I fully know

00:05:11
that for some people that mindset might work that you

00:05:15
just push through no matter what, that it's just hustle all the time.

00:05:18
I've learned that that really doesn't work for me. And I

00:05:22
suspect that it doesn't work for a lot of people. This just hustle all the

00:05:26
time, push through no matter what. That like no pain, no gain

00:05:29
mentality, just, it doesn't work for me. And I found

00:05:33
that it really doesn't work for a lot of people. But then also

00:05:37
don't think that it really reflects God's heart of compassion

00:05:40
and mercy. Instead it is leading to

00:05:44
burnout. And that all or nothing mentality.

00:05:48
It's really a very harsh mindset and I think

00:05:51
it often makes us be mean to ourselves. Like we beat

00:05:55
ourselves up and if we can't meet that high expectation that

00:05:59
we've set, we start to identify as failures

00:06:02
or abandon the goal altogether. You know, just

00:06:06
jumping to the next thing and then it's just, just like staying stuck on this

00:06:10
hamster wheel over and over and over again and he can't get off. And I

00:06:13
think it often, often will creep up and affect us in just

00:06:17
the small, everyday things. I'm going to use my husband for an

00:06:21
example. We were driving home from being

00:06:25
out of town this past weekend and there was some construction

00:06:29
on the exit that we needed to take. And

00:06:33
he was, you know, trying to get as far up as he could and then

00:06:37
get over. And anyway, he just completely missed the ex, so we

00:06:41
had to reroute. And it was like in that moment, because he

00:06:44
didn't, you know, take the exit correctly the first time and we had to

00:06:48
reroute, he just like beat himself up. Like you could just

00:06:52
see his whole demeanor shift and shut down because he made, he made

00:06:55
a mistake. And I love, I love my husband dearly. And

00:06:59
he, and he knows that this is something that comes up for him often, is

00:07:03
that he just has these very, very high expectations for himself. And

00:07:06
when he makes just the smallest mistake, he beats himself up. And this is just

00:07:10
kind of what I'm talking about is when we,

00:07:13
we don't like to be rerouted or if we don't

00:07:17
get it right the first time, we beat ourselves up. But that just really

00:07:21
doesn't reflect on what God teaches us about

00:07:24
compassion and mercy and even forgiveness.

00:07:28
And so today I want to talk about a healthier, healthier

00:07:32
alternative to that all or nothing mindset. And it's

00:07:35
something that I like to call the for the most part, mentality.

00:07:39
It's really about understanding what am I doing for the most part

00:07:43
in all these areas of my life. It's not saying, you know, this is how

00:07:47
it has to be so rigid every single day. And if I don't check that

00:07:50
box, then what was even worth it? Right? But it's just understanding

00:07:54
that, for the most part, these are the things I'm doing on a daily

00:07:58
basis. This is how I'm. I'm living my life.

00:08:01
And what I really love about this mindset is that it allows us to

00:08:05
honor our humanity, to know that

00:08:09
God knew, knew and created us, knowing that we were going

00:08:12
to make mistakes, that we are human, and that we're not to get

00:08:16
things right all the time, but it just allows us to honor ourselves

00:08:20
and the humanity in which we were created. It allows us

00:08:24
to embrace grace, to accept grace,

00:08:27
to ask for grace, and then be able to

00:08:31
grow through life's motions without losing sight of what

00:08:35
truly matters. And so this, for the

00:08:39
most part, mentality is really about building

00:08:42
consistency, not perfection. It's

00:08:45
about showing up as the best that you can be in

00:08:49
each season of life, in each day of your life, knowing

00:08:53
that it's not going to be perfect every single day,

00:08:57
and that's okay. And this mindset really honors

00:09:00
the truth that we are finite beings,

00:09:04
that we were created with limits, and that those

00:09:07
limits are not failures. But it's that invitation to

00:09:11
rely on God. It's that invitation to,

00:09:15
you know, really offer. Offer ourselves over to the Lord and

00:09:19
allow him to work and transform in our lives.

00:09:22
But how do you figure out what that, for the most

00:09:26
part, mentality looks like in your life? You know, how do

00:09:30
you know what it is that you're doing for the most part? And this is

00:09:33
really where that clarity around your goals and as well

00:09:37
as your identity is so important. Not,

00:09:41
you know, knowing not just what you're doing, but why you're doing

00:09:45
those things. It can really help you stay grounded and aligned

00:09:48
with. With your values. So I'm just going to share an

00:09:52
example here. So there are definitely days

00:09:55
when I don't feel like working on my business at all. I

00:09:59
don't want to work on podcast episodes. I don't want to do emails

00:10:03
for my business. And sometimes it's because, you know, I've gotten

00:10:07
into a good book or a new show, and that just feels like it's

00:10:11
going to be way more fun doing anything that I need to do

00:10:14
around my house or for my business. But

00:10:19
if I'm being honest, there's also this part of it

00:10:22
that, you know, creating a podcast or

00:10:26
is. Is challenging. Right? And. And the con, creating that content

00:10:30
is challenging because it requires me to open up,

00:10:34
you know, and lean into creativity as well as vulnerability.

00:10:38
And there's this little voice in my head that before I sit down to write

00:10:42
a podcast or record a podcast, it's like, what if this episode

00:10:46
isn't good enough? Or what if no one likes it? Or

00:10:50
what are listeners going to think about this? And when

00:10:53
it comes to, you know, doing other things around the house, like, you know, cooking

00:10:56
dinner or cleaning the house or doing laundry, it's like,

00:11:01
it'd be so much more fun to go do this other thing. And

00:11:04
so it becomes tempting to just avoid it altogether.

00:11:08
But when I lean into that, for the most part, mentality, it

00:11:12
really grounds me and it reminds

00:11:16
myself of why I'm doing these things,

00:11:19
why am I creating a podcast? Why am I,

00:11:23
you know, building a life coaching business for women? And it's

00:11:27
to serve God and to serve others through this work.

00:11:30
It's reminding myself that he's given me these gifts and these

00:11:34
opportunities and that I'm doing this not

00:11:38
just for me and the things that can come out of it in my life,

00:11:41
but also to serve the Lord, to further his kingdom, to help make

00:11:45
other people's lives better, for. For other people to open

00:11:49
their lives up to how the Lord is going to transform it. And

00:11:52
then that creates that ripple effect. And this shift

00:11:56
helps me push past that discomfort and take

00:12:00
the next step, even if it isn't perfect. But

00:12:04
we all do this in so many different areas of our lives, right?

00:12:08
We avoid setting these meaningful goals or

00:12:12
pursuing our dreams or doing the things that

00:12:15
we know we need to do to, you know, push the needle forward,

00:12:19
because, you know, it does. It is challenging and it

00:12:22
requires hard work. But I think deep down, part of one of the

00:12:26
big reasons why we don't do the things that we know we need

00:12:30
to do is because it's easier not to

00:12:34
do them. It's just easier to stay in these

00:12:37
comfort zones, to stay in that familiar familiarity, even if

00:12:41
we don't really like it. It's just easier to stay here. And then we end

00:12:45
up telling ourselves, you know, it's okay, it's okay that I didn't do

00:12:49
that. It's okay that I didn't, you know, go after this thing because it

00:12:52
just wasn't meant to be. But

00:12:56
deep down, we know that that's not true. We know that

00:13:00
we didn't even put the effort into that, right? And we just try to

00:13:04
talk ourselves out of it was that just wasn't meant to be. That wasn't part

00:13:07
of God's plan. And maybe that's not really true.

00:13:11
Maybe it is part of God's plan. But you

00:13:15
wanted to stay in that comfort zone, because often we're

00:13:18
just afraid of the hard work. I know I am, and I can fully

00:13:22
admit that, that sometimes I am so afraid of what any of

00:13:26
this requires of me. The unknown or the

00:13:29
possibility of a failure or possibility of not getting the

00:13:33
outcome that I really desire. And I think that

00:13:37
it perpetuates that experience of just

00:13:40
going through the motions. Right? We just get stuck

00:13:44
in going through the motions of life because we're

00:13:47
not willing to put ourselves out there. We're not willing to do the hard

00:13:51
work. And so nothing is really challenging us to grow.

00:13:55
And this is where this concept of

00:13:59
growing through the motions, a phrase that I first heard

00:14:03
from Father Mike Schmidt, comes into play. He has a

00:14:07
whole, like, homily series on growing through the motions. And he

00:14:11
talks about how when we are, we're doing things over

00:14:14
and over again, like going to mass or our prayer

00:14:18
life, it's easy to lose sight of the meaning behind why

00:14:22
we are doing these things. We start to just go through the

00:14:26
motions without really connecting. And his

00:14:30
challenge to us is to seek meaningful connection with God in

00:14:33
everything we do. And I really think this idea of

00:14:37
growing through the motions can apply through so many areas of our

00:14:40
lives when we are doing the things that we need to know how to do.

00:14:44
But we're like, well, this isn't getting us anywhere, or this

00:14:48
isn't challenging us, or. Or, you know, we stay. We're staying

00:14:51
stuck in our comfort zones. This idea of growing through the motions

00:14:55
can really help us. I mean, what if we looked

00:14:59
at our daily tasks, even those mundane ones, as

00:15:02
opportunities to love and serve God? You know, cooking

00:15:06
dinner, folding laundry, or even sending out an email can

00:15:10
actually be acts of faithfulness and obedience

00:15:13
when done with the right heart. Instead of seeing these things

00:15:17
as obligations, we can see them as

00:15:21
privileges or opportunities that we get to

00:15:25
do these things that not have to do these things.

00:15:29
And for me, this perspective has really been a game

00:15:32
changer. When I find myself being tempted to

00:15:36
binge Netflix instead of working on the podcast, I can ask

00:15:40
myself, you know, am I being faithful to the gifts God has given

00:15:43
me? Am I stewarding my time and my talents well?

00:15:48
And while sometimes rest is really that faithful choice,

00:15:51
there are other times that I'm realizing I'm just avoiding

00:15:55
the harder, more meaningful work. Or I'm avoiding it

00:15:59
because I can't see the reason why I'm doing this. I can't see

00:16:02
the outcome that's coming. That if I just stay faithful and I show up every

00:16:06
week to doing a pod to doing these podcast episodes or sending the

00:16:10
emails or folding the laundry or cleaning the house, that that's all

00:16:14
going to lead to something much greater than I can even imagine.

00:16:18
That it's about being obedient and faithful to the Lord, because that's what

00:16:21
he asks of us. So I just want to

00:16:25
share five practical tips to really help you embrace this, for

00:16:29
the most part, mentality. So the first one is to define your

00:16:32
why. We've talked about this in previous episodes. But having that

00:16:36
why, that deep why, and getting clear on your goals and

00:16:40
your values, that why are you pursuing this

00:16:44
habit or this dream or this calling? Why is the Lord

00:16:47
asking you to do these mundane tasks over and over and over

00:16:51
again? What is that deeper why? And then two,

00:16:55
start small. Remember, that smallest step,

00:16:58
like that 10 minute walk, is still

00:17:02
progress. Don't dismiss the little things,

00:17:05
don't dismiss the little wins. Those are the things that are

00:17:09
going to help you grow through the motions. And

00:17:13
then number three, give yourself grace, y'all.

00:17:17
Life happens. There are going to be days that

00:17:21
we miss the mark or we choose not to show up.

00:17:24
And that is okay. Remember,

00:17:28
we're going to have to reroute in life because we miss the exit

00:17:32
that God may put that billboard up there, but we just missed the exit

00:17:36
and we're gonna have to reroute. What matters is

00:17:40
learning how to, you know, get back on track to

00:17:43
recommit, to ask the Lord to help you, you know,

00:17:47
reroute and figure out the next right step. But don't

00:17:50
self condemn, don't beat yourself up. This is,

00:17:54
this is all about the journey, right? Remember, God's

00:17:58
plan for us takes a lifetime. And then number four, focus

00:18:02
on consistency, not perfection. Figure

00:18:05
out what it is that you're showing up for, for the most part. What are

00:18:09
the things that you are doing for the most part, rather than

00:18:13
striving to a hundred percent complete everything

00:18:16
every single day. That when we

00:18:20
show up with consistency, not perfection, that we are allowing grace

00:18:24
to infuse our days, that we are allowing mercy and compassion

00:18:28
for ourselves and for others. And then number

00:18:31
five, inviting God into that process, that

00:18:35
prayer for guidance, for perseverance, for strength

00:18:39
and clarity and remembering that we are not doing this

00:18:43
alone, that God is with you every step of the way. One of

00:18:46
my favorite prayers every day is to ask the Lord to

00:18:50
take my efforts and to multiply them, to take the

00:18:54
small tasks that I'm doing every single day and to multiply

00:18:58
him, because that is what he does. He takes our loaves and

00:19:02
fishes and he creates abundance out of

00:19:05
them. And so y'all, this for the most part

00:19:09
mentality is really about freedom. It's the freedom from the

00:19:12
pressure to be perfect and the freedom to grow in

00:19:16
God's grace. And when we are faithful in the small

00:19:19
everyday things, God's using that to prepare us

00:19:23
for the bigger things that we cannot see, for the seasons of

00:19:27
abundance, but even for those times of suffering

00:19:31
that when we are faithful him to him and the good and the

00:19:34
bad, that he's going to provide for us.

00:19:39
Right? Father Schmitz and his growing through,

00:19:43
growing through the seasons. One of the things he talks about is to

00:19:47
pray. Like we want to pray in every season. Well, to pray in every season,

00:19:51
we have to pray in every season, right? It's about

00:19:54
showing up and doing the things that the Lord is asking us to do.

00:19:58
So let's embrace the journey to trust the

00:20:02
process and remember that every step we take, no matter how small

00:20:06
it is, is just part of this greater purpose.

00:20:10
So if this episode resonated with you, if you

00:20:14
had something that really stuck out to you, I'd love to hear from you.

00:20:17
What's one small step that you can take today towards your

00:20:21
goals or dreams? What is that? For the most part, thing that you showing

00:20:25
