Have you ever caught yourself mid-scroll thinking…

"Why do I feel so much pressure to be smaller… more productive… just better?"

Like—where is that even coming from?

Because sometimes it doesn't feel like it's us.

It feels like something we've been formed by.

This week on Nourished to Bloom, we take a step back and name something bigger than food:

The cultural ropes.

Diet culture. Productivity culture. Performance-driven worth.

These aren't just personal struggles — they're the air we breathe. And they quietly shape how we see ourselves, how we eat, how we live… and what we believe we have to prove.

In this episode, we unpack:

✨ The Invisible Ropes – How diet culture and productivity culture subtly tether our identity to results, appearance, and achievement.

🪢 Performance as a False Measure – The lie that our worth is something we earn through discipline, output, or "doing it right."

💡 4 Types of Goals – A powerful reframe:

  • Performance (results-driven)
  • Fulfillment (peace and values-driven)
  • Learning (growth and skill-building)
  • Awareness (noticing without changing)

🌿 Cultural Repentance – Lent as a time not just to change behavior, but to renew our minds and turn away from false messages about our worth.

🛑 Practical Ways to Fast – From self-criticism, body-checking, constant productivity, and the voices that keep us striving instead of abiding.

The Gospel doesn't say, "Prove yourself."

It says, "You are already loved."

So this week, we're practicing something different.

🌱 Your Invitation This Week

• Notice when you're measuring your worth — through food, your body, or your productivity • Pause and ask: "Better according to who?" • Choose one way to fast from performance — maybe leaving something undone, interrupting self-criticism, or stepping away from comparison triggers

By Easter, we're not aiming to be more impressive.

We're becoming more free.

Because the rope isn't just what we do…

It's what we believe we have to prove.

Let's untether together.

You were made to bloom. 🌸

00:00:01
So over the past several weeks on our Lenten journey, we've been talking

00:00:05
about ropes, the attachments that tether our hearts,

00:00:08
whether that's food or distraction, comparison,

00:00:12
emotional comfort. But today we're really going to zoom out and

00:00:16
really understand that some of these attachments, some of these ropes, aren't just

00:00:19
personal. They're really cultural. They're these things that we've

00:00:23
been conditioned to believe. They're almost like the air that we

00:00:27
breathe that keeps us moving. And two of the strongest that we face

00:00:31
are those from diet culture and from a productivity and

00:00:34
performance culture. So today we're going to break those down, see

00:00:38
how they keep us tethered, see how they keep us stuck, and how they are

00:00:42
not from the Lord, and how we can reframe some of these beliefs

00:00:46
to allow us to really cut those ties, cut those ropes, and

00:00:50
ascend towards the life that the Lord desires for us to live.

00:02:23
Welcome to Nourish to Bloom, where every day is a sacred

00:02:27
invitation to thrive.

00:02:31
Hey there, welcome back to the Nourish to Bloom podcast. So happy to be spending

00:02:35
some time here with you this week. It's been a little bit since I've

00:02:38
actually recorded an episode since I had been in Rome, but

00:02:42
had a really amazing trip with my family. I think some of my

00:02:46
highlights were the papal audience and

00:02:49
just being able to really see how universal our

00:02:53
church is and all the languages that were spoken,

00:02:57
um, the, the readings that were proclaimed and the blessings

00:03:01
that Pope Leo gave was just really, really amazing. And

00:03:05
I think that kind of leads into what we're going to talk about today and

00:03:08
just really understanding what are the things that are fueling our beliefs,

00:03:13
these maybe cultural or belief attachments

00:03:16
that we have, and are they keeping us tethered, or are they really helping us

00:03:20
ascend towards the Lord? And the ones that we're really going to deep

00:03:24
into— dive into today, two of the strongest ones that I

00:03:27
believe are diet culture and kind of this productivity

00:03:31
culture. So when we talk about diet culture, when we hear that

00:03:35
phrase, we often think food rules, weight loss,

00:03:39
these before and after pictures that we see on our Instagrams. But

00:03:42
diet culture really goes deeper than food. It's this

00:03:46
systematic belief, this systematic

00:03:49
messaging that tells us you are only as good as the

00:03:53
results that you get. Your worth can be measured by

00:03:57
a scale, by a jean size, that

00:04:00
your body is a project or a problem that is constantly

00:04:04
needing to be worked on, that more discipline

00:04:08
equals more value, that rest is lazy,

00:04:12
and that productivity proves your worth. And if we're honest,

00:04:16
this doesn't just show up and how we eat, it really has bled over into

00:04:20
how we live. Because that same voice says you

00:04:23
should eat less, be smaller, do better is often

00:04:27
the same voice that says you should be doing more, you should be

00:04:31
achieving more, striving for more, producing more. And it's that

00:04:34
performance-based belief system, that performance-based,

00:04:38
productivity-based culture that we're living in. And this

00:04:42
performance can become this rope, this tether And so that's what

00:04:46
we're going to talk about, this idea of fasting from this diet

00:04:50
and performance culture, and how we don't have

00:04:53
to rely on these things as our identity, because both of them

00:04:57
are rooted in that same lie that our worth is something that we earn.

00:05:02
But we know that that's not what the gospel says. The gospel does not say

00:05:05
you have to prove yourself. It simply tells us that you are already

00:05:09
loved. No questions asked, no

00:05:13
performance needed, just simply you are loved because of who

00:05:17
you are. So Lent becomes a time of not just giving things

00:05:20
up, but it's really that time of repentance. And repentance simply

00:05:24
means to, to turn, to reorient, to come back

00:05:28
into right order. So what are the things that you need to turn away

00:05:32
from? It's not just certain foods, but really those false

00:05:36
messages, those false identities, and those false measures of

00:05:39
worth that have been tethered, that you have been conditioned to believe

00:05:43
over the course of your life. And so here's where I want to give you

00:05:47
something really kind of practical, and it's really talking

00:05:50
about how we can look at goals. And when we talk

00:05:54
about growth or goals, we maybe somehow

00:05:58
unknowingly stay stuck in kind of the same performance mindset, these

00:06:02
same performance-type goals. So I want to talk about these

00:06:05
4 types of goals, and I want you just to simply notice— it's not to

00:06:09
say that any of them are necessarily bad, but it's just saying that we as

00:06:13
a culture tend to get stuck this one type of goal, this

00:06:16
performance-based goal. And so I want you to notice, has

00:06:19
there— is there one type of goal that's driving you? And we

00:06:23
really should strive for kind of a balance of these goals because it really helps

00:06:26
us grow in all areas of our life. Um, remember

00:06:30
we're that integrated body, that integrated person, mind, body, and soul.

00:06:35
And so unfortunately, when we get stuck in those performance-based goals, we're not really

00:06:39
growing as a whole person. So I'm just going

00:06:42
to kind of go through them and I just want you to simply notice and

00:06:45
take inventory. Um, you know, are you stuck focused

00:06:48
on this, these one type of goals or what's really been driving you forward?

00:06:53
So the first one is those performance goals. Now these are

00:06:56
strictly kind of these results-driven outcome-based goals, things that we

00:07:00
hear like lose 10 pounds, hit a certain size,

00:07:04
stick to a plan perfectly, work out 5 days a week.

00:07:08
These are the goals that diet culture loves. Because they're

00:07:11
measurable, they're visible, they're praised, but they can

00:07:15
also tether us because our peace becomes dependent on the outcome.

00:07:20
Instead of really focusing on the habits that we're building, we're so focused on

00:07:24
the outcome that it becomes that tether that we can tend to be

00:07:28
obsessive, or we tend to fall into that, that

00:07:31
failure mindset when we can't really hit this mark

00:07:35
that somebody outside of ourselves has set for us.

00:07:39
So kind of some alternatives that we can look at are fulfillment goals,

00:07:43
and these are different because they're not really about the outcomes, but they're about a

00:07:47
direction that you're moving. So what leads to peace?

00:07:51
What are things that align with your values? And what helps you live with more

00:07:54
contentment? And these might look like eating in a way that feels

00:07:58
nourishing and satisfying to your body, nourishing foods

00:08:02
that feel good in your body and that are satisfying.

00:08:06
Creating a space for family dinners or choosing rest when

00:08:10
you need it. So this is about how you're living those kind of

00:08:14
behaviors and those habits, not really about how you measure it.

00:08:18
Now there's also learning goals, and so these focus on growth, not

00:08:22
perfection. So these can be things like learning to understand your hunger

00:08:25
cues, learning how your body responds to different foods, or

00:08:29
developing a new coping skill for, you know, stress and

00:08:33
emotional management. So instead of, I need to get this right, it

00:08:37
becomes, I'm learning something new, a different way to do

00:08:41
something. And that can really change everything.

00:08:45
And the fourth one is awareness goals. And this is one that

00:08:48
can often be overlooked, but it's really powerful. And so it's really

00:08:52
not about changing anything, but it's just about noticing.

00:08:56
When do you feel the urge to restrict? When do you find

00:09:00
yourself overeating? What triggers

00:09:03
comparison in your life and what messages are you believing?

00:09:07
And so awareness creates this space and that space is where God

00:09:11
works. And so here's the shift: diet culture

00:09:15
and this productivity culture can keep us stuck in those performance goals,

00:09:20
but the gospel invites us into, you know, fulfillment, learning,

00:09:24
and awareness. One says do more, be better, try

00:09:27
harder, where the other says abide. Live in

00:09:31
relationship, receive, and

00:09:34
grow. So what does it look like to fast

00:09:38
from diet culture and productivity culture messaging this week?

00:09:42
Not just in food, but really in that mindset.

00:09:46
Here are a few invitations. Fast from

00:09:49
self-criticism. Notice how often you evaluate yourself,

00:09:53
your body, your food, your productivity, and gently

00:09:57
interrupt it. Pause and just say, oh, I noticed that this popped

00:10:01
up. Maybe it's fasting from body checking,

00:10:05
that noticing when you're walking by in the mirror or measuring yourself on the

00:10:09
scale or just constantly adjusting yourself, and just

00:10:12
let your body exist without constant evaluation.

00:10:16
Another invitation is to fast from performance-driven thinking.

00:10:20
When you catch yourself saying, I need to be better, just pause and ask

00:10:24
Better according to who? By what are you measuring yourself?

00:10:28
Is it a diet culture and productivity culture

00:10:32
message or standard that you are trying to measure yourself up

00:10:35
against? And what would the Lord be asking you to do

00:10:39
instead? And maybe it's fasting from

00:10:43
constant productivity. Try leaving something undone

00:10:47
at the end of the day, not because it doesn't matter, but just

00:10:50
because you need to know that your worth isn't on the line with what you

00:10:54
can accomplish in a day. And maybe it's fasting

00:10:58
from the voices that reinforce all of this. Maybe that looks

00:11:01
like taking a break from social media or other influences

00:11:05
that are driving the cultural and productivity messages in

00:11:09
your mind. Maybe that's unfollowing accounts that stir

00:11:13
comparison or striving, or step away from

00:11:16
other inputs that keep you tethered. Because truly,

00:11:20
what it is that we're consuming forms us. So instead of reaching

00:11:24
for that social media or those, um, you know, other

00:11:29
inputs that are really inputting

00:11:32
how you're, you're thinking about yourself, reach for your Bible

00:11:36
instead. And this is what I mean by that cultural repentance.

00:11:40
It's not just changing behavior, but it's really about renewing our

00:11:44
minds. It's choosing truth and the

00:11:47
absolute only truth over noise. And slowly,

00:11:52
with the Lord's help and his grace, that rope is going to loosen.

00:11:56
That tether is maybe going to start unwind or fraying, because

00:11:59
freedom doesn't come from perfect performance. It really is just

00:12:03
coming from this right order, reorienting our minds, our

00:12:07
hearts, our bodies to putting God at the center, and then

00:12:11
everything else is going to fall into its place. So this week I

00:12:14
want you to ask, where am I still measuring my worth?

00:12:19
Which type of goals am I living from? Am I living from

00:12:22
performance or something deeper? And by

00:12:26
Easter, we're not trying to become more impressive or meet somebody else's

00:12:29
standards. Again, it's about being able to live more

00:12:33
free in God's truth. And so next week we're going to talk

00:12:37
about how we can sustain this freedom beyond Lent and how to

00:12:40
live untethered in a world that constantly is trying to pull us

00:12:44
back. Until then, pay attention to the messages that believing

00:12:48
and that you're receiving, because that rope isn't often what you're doing, but

00:12:51
it's really what you're thinking you have to prove. Thanks again for spending

00:12:55
this time here with me. I hope you have a beautiful and blessed week.

00:12:59
I look forward to seeing you here again next week. We'll talk soon. Bye!
