Hey friend—have you ever noticed how one small moment can send your whole day (or week!) spiraling? Maybe we miss a workout, snap at our kids, or eat something we said we wouldn't… and suddenly our mind jumps straight to, "Why do I even bother? This is just how I am."
If that sounds familiar, you're not alone. That all-or-nothing thinking is more common than we realize—and if we're not careful, it can send our mindset rolling straight into the gutter.
In this week's episode, we're talking mindset, self-awareness, and how to stop the spiral before it takes over—using a powerful (and surprisingly fun) analogy inspired by a client: bowling with bumpers 🎳
We imagine our mind as the bowling lane, our thoughts as the ball, and self-awareness as the bumpers—the gentle guardrails that keep us from veering into victim mentality, self-sabotage, doom scrolling, or that familiar "why bother" place.
Instead of shaming ourselves for not being perfect, we explore how building mental bumpers helps us notice when we're spiraling, pause with compassion, and gently reroute our thinking back toward truth and grace—especially God's truth.
🎳 In this episode, we unpack:
- How the Reason Cycle (mind mapping) works—and how unchecked thoughts turn into emotional spirals
- Why self-awareness isn't about perfection, but about staying in the lane
- The bowling bumpers analogy that will change how you see mindset forever
- Three practical steps to build your mental bumpers:
- Name the pattern without shame
- Pause to slow the spiral
- Reframe with God's truth, not "positive vibes only"
- How to invite God into your thinking so your mindset aligns with who He says you are
As we reflect together, we'll ask:
- Where does our mind tend to "lose the lane"?
- What does our personal "gutter" look like?
- And what would it look like to gently engage a bumper—a pause, a prayer, a moment of awareness—the next time we start to spiral?
We don't have to bowl a perfect game. But we can set up the guardrails that keep us moving toward God's best for us.
Tune in to Episode 101 and let's keep growing—one aware, grace-filled moment at a time. 💛
P.S. If this episode resonates, consider sharing it with someone who might need a reminder that they're still in the game.

00:00:01
Hey friends, have you ever noticed how fast your mind can
00:00:05
spiral out of control? Like one small thing goes
00:00:09
wrong or a comment from somebody lands weird.
00:00:12
Maybe you miss your workout or you snap at
00:00:16
your kids, or maybe you eat something that you said you
00:00:19
shouldn't or couldn't or wouldn't have. Or maybe your day
00:00:23
just didn't go as you planned and suddenly your brain goes from
00:00:27
that was hard to I'm failing. Why
00:00:31
do I even bother trying? Or one of my favorites,
00:00:34
this is just how I am. I know that sounds familiar
00:00:38
for a lot of you, but here's the truth. You're not broken and you're
00:00:42
definitely not alone. And so today on the Nourished Balloon podcast,

00:00:49
for everything. And we're really going to get dig deep
00:00:53
into self awareness and we're going to use something that I call
00:00:56
mind mapping. I've also called it the Reason Cycle, but we're going to do it
00:01:00
through the lens of an analogy that was inspired by one of my clients
00:01:03
recently. And we're going to look at self awareness as bowling bumpers.
00:01:07
Because self awareness doesn't keep your life perfect, but it
00:01:11
definitely helps keep your mind out of the gutter.

00:02:46

00:02:49
thrive. Hey there. Welcome back to the Nourish to Bloom
00:02:53
podcast. So happy to be here with you this week
00:02:57
and really sharing, I think a fun episode that was
00:03:01
inspired by a client recently. I also do
00:03:04
some wellness coaching for a Catholic nonprofit.
00:03:08
And in a session recently, I was talking to one of the members and
00:03:12
he was talking about how he had really been
00:03:15
struggling with the victim mentality. And in one of our
00:03:19
previous, previous sessions, we really went through this
00:03:23
mind mapping or this reason cycle kind of
00:03:26
blueprint. And I helped him see, you know, things
00:03:30
about his thoughts and his emotions and how all of this was leading to him
00:03:34
being stuck in that victim mentality. And he said that ever since we went
00:03:38
through that, he has really seen a shift. He, he can
00:03:42
be aware of when that's happening and he kind of chooses this different
00:03:46
path. And he gave this really cool analogy is
00:03:49
like, it's like when this happens, these
00:03:53
bumpers go up like on a bowling lane, and it keeps his mind from
00:03:57
going into the gutter. And I thought that was one of the
00:04:01
best analogies I've ever heard for how
00:04:04
mindset and self awareness can really be so
00:04:08
helpful. So that's what we're going to explore a little bit today. I took
00:04:11
this whole idea of bowling bumpers and
00:04:15
mind in the gutter and all of that and kind of expanded upon it to
00:04:19
really talk about mind mapping and the reason cycle to help
00:04:23
you understand that your mindset is key.
00:04:27
It is the foundation for
00:04:31
everything. And so once you see this, once you
00:04:34
understand this mind mapping or this reason cycle,
00:04:38
you'll never unsee it because. Because this is really how
00:04:41
your mind is working. So
00:04:45
let's dig in. First, something happens, right?
00:04:48
There's a situation, a circumstance, a trigger or a
00:04:52
stressor, and then you have a thought about
00:04:55
whatever it is. And then that thought that you
00:04:59
have creates a feeling. And then
00:05:03
that feeling is driving your action or your behavior.
00:05:08
And then what happens is you use that outcome as proof
00:05:12
for the original thought. And then you just get stuck in this
00:05:16
cycle over and over and over again.
00:05:19
And so sometimes this cycle works to our advantage. It helps us have
00:05:23
that healthy mindset. We have strong self awareness
00:05:27
and we can, you know, really move past
00:05:30
limiting beliefs other times. And I think this is where a lot
00:05:34
of us get stuck is that we kind of get
00:05:38
trapped in this site, this reason cycle, or this mind mapping
00:05:41
in a really negative way. And so we'll go through a couple of
00:05:45
examples. One, you know, maybe you have a
00:05:49
goal around, you know, trying to engage in joyful movement
00:05:52
daily, but you are exhausted.
00:05:56
You have been doing all the things for the family. Maybe you
00:06:00
are battling a cold or allergies or whatever.
00:06:03
And you think, like, I just, I can't keep up
00:06:07
with this. Like, I can't do this. And then you feel
00:06:11
overwhelmed. And then, you know, a couple
00:06:15
of days go by and you kind of just are like, whatever, it's not even
00:06:17
worth it. So you just stop trying to get
00:06:21
back to moving, right? So you stop taking your care of yourself in
00:06:25
that way. And then you just say, see, I knew you couldn't do
00:06:29
this. And that's that mind mapping, that reason cycle
00:06:32
and action. Maybe you are,
00:06:37
I don't know, building a business or you're really trying to follow
00:06:40
the Lord's calling. And maybe that looks like establishing
00:06:44
a ministry. And it's challenging and you come up
00:06:48
against an obstacle. Maybe it's a tech thing or
00:06:51
it's a financial thing, whatever. And
00:06:55
it's that you have this thought about it of like, I just don't know how
00:06:59
I'm. How I'm going to do this. And you feel that
00:07:02
overwhelmed. You feel like this is never going to work.
00:07:06
So then you just kind of stop taking action because
00:07:10
you're, like, fearful of this. And then you're just like, see,
00:07:14
I knew I couldn't do this. The thing
00:07:17
is, and the key to all of this is that the problem
00:07:21
isn't the situation or the circumstance
00:07:24
or the goal. And the problem really isn't your
00:07:28
feeling. The problem is
00:07:32
your thoughts. And when they
00:07:36
go unchecked, when you are not taking
00:07:40
every captive, every thought captive, when you are not putting on
00:07:43
the mind of Christ, when these things pop up,
00:07:47
it leads to just
00:07:51
things feeling out of control. These things stay unchecked. And so
00:07:54
we can use this idea of bowling to help us visualize this, right?
00:07:59
So I want you to stop and think. Your mind is a bowling lane,
00:08:03
and your thoughts are the bowling ball, okay?
00:08:07
And life, well, we know that life is loud and it's
00:08:10
unpredictable and it's full of distractions.
00:08:14
And you are, you know, you have your bowling ball and you step up to
00:08:17
the lane and you release that ball down the
00:08:21
lane and you're bowling without bumpers. And what happens?
00:08:26
Well, sometimes you bowl that ball Straight into the gutter. And it's just the
00:08:29
worst attempt at bowling you could ever have, right?
00:08:33
Or sometimes you, you know, release the ball and it's going and
00:08:37
it just slightly veers off the lane. And so it was,
00:08:40
it was, it was going the right direction for a while, right?
00:08:45
And then sometimes, and I think this is like the worst one ever, you, you
00:08:48
let go of that bowling ball and it like gets all the way
00:08:52
to the end and then veers off right at the very end
00:08:55
into the gutter. And it's just so
00:08:59
devastating, right? This is
00:09:03
what happens, right? This is this, this, this gutter, right? Like we,
00:09:06
this is how our mindset works. We're
00:09:10
working towards something, right? And that, that something is whatever that
00:09:14
goal is, whatever we're trying to, to achieve whatever
00:09:17
habit we want to build. And sometimes, you know, things are going
00:09:21
really of a sudden something happens and we veer off
00:09:25
into the gutter, right? And, and maybe we get a little
00:09:29
bit further and we veer off into the gutter, right? And
00:09:32
you're just like, why, why is this happening? But what happens is, is when
00:09:36
we, we, when our mind goes into the gutter, it looks like
00:09:39
victim mentality, it looks like self sabotage. It
00:09:43
looks like all or nothing thinking, shame
00:09:47
and guilt. This like, why bother energy.
00:09:52
And what we know with bowling is like, once that ball is in the gutter,
00:09:55
the frame is basically over, right? But the
00:09:58
cool thing is, is that we can use self awareness
00:10:02
to help us, to help us get that ball
00:10:06
all the way down the lane to knock some pins over,
00:10:10
right? Because we're going to use self awareness as the bumpers.
00:10:15
So we're going to activate our bumpers like we would in bowling.
00:10:19
And self awareness as the bumper is not control,
00:10:23
it's not perfection. It's not things like, ooh,
00:10:27
positive vibes only. It is building awareness.
00:10:31
And awareness is something that comes from within
00:10:35
you. Like self awareness doesn't mean that you'll
00:10:38
never have negative thoughts, that you'll never experience a
00:10:42
spiral, that you'll always respond calmly or you're going to get it
00:10:46
right every time. It doesn't mean that there are times that your
00:10:50
ball will not end up in the gutter. Doesn't
00:10:54
mean that you're going to bullish strike every time either, right? But self awareness does
00:10:57
mean that you're going to notice this spiral
00:11:01
sooner. You're going to be able to name what's
00:11:04
happening, what it is that you're experiencing and then you can
00:11:08
interrupt the cycle. You can course correct, right? You can hit that
00:11:11
Bumper and you can get it back on the lane.
00:11:15
You can give yourself another option.
00:11:18
Bowling bumpers don't force the ball to bowl a strike every
00:11:22
time. They're just there guiding your ball,
00:11:26
basically saying, nope, we're not going in the gutter today,
00:11:30
right? It, it gently nudges your ball in a
00:11:34
different direction. It's the same thing can
00:11:38
happen with our mindset when we start to
00:11:41
build self awareness. So let's
00:11:45
talk about what happens without self awareness, right? One
00:11:49
thought sneaks in. I always mess this up and
00:11:53
you don't have that bumper in place and that thought turns into like,
00:11:56
why even try? You still don't have a bumper in place.
00:12:00
And this leads to things like avoidance, emotional eating,
00:12:05
doom scrolling, snapping at people, just
00:12:08
quitting and giving up. And then that
00:12:12
gets to that most dangerous part of where you just believe this is who you
00:12:16
are. And the thing is, that's not truth.
00:12:20
That's just the gutter talking.
00:12:24
But when we put our bumpers in place using self
00:12:27
awareness, it sounds gentle, but it's firm.
00:12:31
It's saying things like, okay, I'm noticing this
00:12:34
familiar thought pattern in this particular situation.
00:12:38
Or this feels uncomfortable, not unsafe,
00:12:44
I'm tired, but I'm not failing
00:12:48
or I don't need to decide anything right now or
00:12:52
this moment doesn't define me, y'. All. The
00:12:55
bumper doesn't shame the ball, it just redirects it.
00:12:59
And so we can build self awareness in a
00:13:03
compassionate way. So I want to just kind of give you three simple ways
00:13:06
that you can start to strengthen your self awareness or also
00:13:10
known as your mental bumpers. The first one is to name the
00:13:13
pattern. Awareness grows when you can label
00:13:17
whatever is happening to you without judgment.
00:13:22
When you can recognize, okay, this is my all or nothing thinking
00:13:26
happening, or you can recognize that this is my inner critic
00:13:30
talking. Or you can recognize this is a stress response
00:13:34
because naming helps create space.
00:13:39
And so one of the ways that I think you can help start to realize
00:13:43
that this is happening really comes when your emotion, when you can recognize
00:13:46
your emotions, that all of your emotions have this physical manifestation
00:13:50
in your body. So you feel something and it's going to have a physical
00:13:54
sensation in the body. And so when we start to build this
00:13:57
mind body connection of self awareness, it helps us to be
00:14:01
able to point back to our mindset of like,
00:14:05
curiosity of, huh? Is this a
00:14:08
distorted belief? Is this a distorted mindset? Right? And so
00:14:12
we can start to name these patterns of thinking and get curious about
00:14:15
them. And when we can do that, we can then start to slow
00:14:19
the cycle, which is number two, because you don't
00:14:23
have to immediately fix the thought. Your deep
00:14:27
rooted beliefs, AKA your mindset, your
00:14:30
operating procedure, the way that you,
00:14:35
the way that you were doing things come from this set of beliefs. And
00:14:38
they are like a Jenga tower. They're made up of all these different
00:14:42
thoughts. So it's almost impossible to fix the thought
00:14:46
immediately. And that's not what I'm saying or asking
00:14:50
you to do. I just want you to create a pause. And
00:14:54
that looks like taking a deep breath, maybe
00:14:57
grounding yourself somehow in prayer, in journaling, in
00:15:01
saying a rosary, in just simply, you know, putting your
00:15:05
feet on the floor, recognizing what it, like what
00:15:09
you can physically tangibly touch, and then just
00:15:13
asking yourself, you know, what am I reacting to?
00:15:17
And really, when you slow this cycle and you create this pause, it's
00:15:20
allowing those bumpers to come up on your bowling lane.
00:15:26
It's, it's putting that, that, that bumper up so your mind doesn't
00:15:30
go automatically to the, to the gutter. That pause is what's
00:15:33
going to allow that redirection. And that's where
00:15:37
number three comes in. And this is where you start
00:15:41
that reframe. And maybe it's just one thought at a time,
00:15:45
but the whole idea behind this is to anchor your
00:15:49
thoughts to truth, to take those thoughts captive
00:15:52
and hold them up to God's truth. To put on the mind of Christ
00:15:56
when these things are coming up. And so that's
00:16:00
like, you know, asking, you know, what does God say here?
00:16:04
Inviting his perspective into the situation.
00:16:08
What is, what is God's words? And what are the words of, you know, this
00:16:11
mindset or this, this worldly mindset that I have,
00:16:16
you know, what is actually true? Not just
00:16:20
loud, is this thought that I have true
00:16:23
100% of the time? Or could something else be true?
00:16:29
And then being able to recognize grace in that moment,
00:16:33
right? Because when we can anchor to the truth, when we can invite God's perspective
00:16:37
into this, that is that redirection that
00:16:40
realigns us back down that lane.
00:16:45
And so if you've been bowling in the gutter lately, I want
00:16:49
you to hear this. This is not about trying harder.
00:16:53
It's not needing more discipline. It's not needing
00:16:56
to fix yourself. It's just about
00:17:00
building awareness with compassion.
00:17:04
Because I promise, if you start to build this awareness where you can just
00:17:08
create this pause and you start to really
00:17:11
understand this pattern, these patterns of thinking
00:17:15
that you have, it's going to really change
00:17:19
the way that you approach life and the way that you're living it
00:17:23
naturally, building better
00:17:26
habits, being healthier physically, mentally,
00:17:30
emotionally. So just think about awareness as, you know,
00:17:34
engaging those bumpers. And the thing is, bumpers aren't
00:17:37
childish if we think about it. They're actually
00:17:41
pretty wise, especially because they
00:17:45
help us get closer to whatever it is the Lord is inviting us
00:17:49
to. And the goal isn't about
00:17:52
bowling a perfect game. It's really about
00:17:56
staying in that lane long enough to be able to grow, to
00:18:00
get further and further and closer and closer to that
00:18:04
goal, to that habit change, to what the Lord is calling you to,
00:18:09
instead of veering off into the gutter, going
00:18:13
down self sabotage, going down into that victim mentality
00:18:17
and just believing that this is really what the Lord
00:18:20
has for you. Because that's not true. He wants you to get down
00:18:24
to the end of the lane. He would love for you to bowl the strike.
00:18:28
But even if you don't, he's so excited that you are just
00:18:31
taking those steps to being
00:18:35
more of the woman that he created you to be.
00:18:39
And so this week I want you to spend some time in reflection and just
00:18:42
ask yourself, where do you tend to lose the
00:18:46
lane? How far down that lane
00:18:49
do you get before you end up in the gutter?
00:18:54
What does your gutter look like when your ball goes into
00:18:57
the gutter? When your mind goes into the gutter? What are you doing?
00:19:02
Is it a victim mentality? Is it doom scrolling? Is it emotional
00:19:05
eating? And then asking, what would
00:19:09
a bumper look like in that moment? What's that
00:19:12
pause? What's that that. That time
00:19:16
that you can engage that bumper and what does that look like?
00:19:21
Because mindset isn't about, you know, forcing yourself to have
00:19:25
better thoughts. It's not just this snap your fingers and you're automatically
00:19:28
thinking something, something else. It's just really
00:19:32
about having that opportunity to
00:19:37
not believe every thought that you have, to not let
00:19:40
every thought that you have create an
00:19:44
emotion and create a behavior, especially one that leads to
00:19:47
being stuck in this negative cycle.
00:19:51
And self awareness, is that that guardrail, that bumper that's
00:19:55
just there to keep you moving forward, that gentle redirect
00:20:00
even when the throw isn't perfect? Right.
00:20:04
It's just allowing you to stay in the game, to
00:20:08
grow, to surrender to
00:20:11
being more of who God created you to be. And I think that that is
00:20:15
so beautiful. So I am so grateful to
00:20:19
my client who had this analogy pop into his head. We can go
00:20:22
back and we can thank God for that gift of that visual that he
00:20:26
gave this client. And I'm so happy to be
00:20:30
sharing this with you because I think it's just such a really, really good visual
00:20:33
to understand our mindset, how it
00:20:37
works, and to be able to build self awareness. So I hope that you have
00:20:41
found this episode beneficial. It was really
00:20:44
fun to kind of tease out these different things
00:20:48
about what using our bumpers and how we can keep our
00:20:51
minds out of the gutter would look like. I hope you have a beautiful and
00:20:55
blessed week. Don't forget, beauty held is a seed, beauty shared
00:20:59
is the flower. It is your time to bloom. I'll see you next week.
00:21:03
Take care and God bless.
